Japan charts: Media Create 4 - 10 July

What the fuck is with people complaining because the numbers are hundreds - not even mere thousands - hundreds off?

Why does it matter that the PSP and NDS's number is a few hundred units give or take what you have?

It is simply a question if these numbers are correct or not for the hardware. The numbers usually come out on Thursday night from Media-Create - so if the numbers are off, then someone might have given the wrong numbers to Next Gen. Or maybe it was just an adding error. I don't know. But when keeping a spreadsheet it is easy to check the numbers, and if they are off, it seems reasonable to wonder why.

Small mistakes can add up to sizable mistakes over time - so the size of the mistake isn't really the issue. Sorry that my question bothered you so much.

No harm done, it is just annoying because it seems to be happening more now, like I noticed it when I lurked in the May NPD thread. Someone raised a fuss over inaccurate numbers and the difference turned out to be mere hundreds.

Media Create does not provide totals publicly.
The totals that you usually see in these threads are kept by individuals here in spreadsheets.

It's possible that Next Gen miscalculated, or it is possible that Media Create revised their total historically. It's not a big difference though, so I don't think there's any need to get excited about it. Especially when you consider that other research companies have different totals and none of them are 100% accurate.

Well, I guess some people (like me :)) are just sticklers when it comes to having accurate numbers for the records. Ultimately, a small error like this one doesn't matter anyway - like you said, these numbers themselves are just estimates from Media-Create anyway. It's just if a small error is carried over each week, after a year or two, the actual totals could be off by a significant amount because the small errors were allowed to exist in the weekly totals.

Anyway, I'm just being nitpicky now - so I shall leave the rest of you to your thread.

After seeing those brain training videos with that old guy I tried holding my DS sideways. It's really comfortable like that, developers should take note. Meteos would probably be better like that in my opinion.

Yeah I have been playing my brain training game for the last month now, and it is a true eye opener as to what the DS is capable of. I have never ever imagined playing a game with the handheld actually held sideways... good job Nintendo in figuring that one out.

It's actually even comfortable to use the dpad and the face buttons. They should rework Puzzle Bobble now.

Brain Training looks awesome from those videos. I've love to get a "game" like that. The one where the guy's score goes back up to 61 is pretty hilarious. He looks so annoyed!

I hope a US version of this comes out some time...

Insanity. I do believe the DS is quickly reaching the 'buy it for the fuck of it' period in it's lifetime (and rather early, too)

Yes, that magical BIFTFOI relm enjoyed by past systems such as the NES, Playstation, PS2, and Gameboy.

It's a freight train folks. Jump on before you get run over :)

But those weren't real ST games. Do you have the sales for Sakura Taisen 4 on DC? It'd be interesting to see how much the series has dropped.

207k, but it was helped by a rather fat limited edition, iirc. The ltd ed included all previous Sakura Taisens.

Fixed.

If the DS is outselling the PSP consistently just from these brain games and Nintendogs, it's just going to blow the PSP out of the water when Pokemon Diamond/Pearl are released.

I mean, jeez, 40K on a non-release week? I'm guessing 80-100K for the week of Shonen Jump Super Stars.

Thanks. So I guess the fanbase hasn't dropped off that much.

Yeah, I was pretty surprised about that and even posted on the Gamefaqs forums asking about those fans. Well, I'm glad that I didn't completely give up on them and gave 5 a chance. It's been great experience so far, good job sega/red!

One thing it does show though

The Japanese want something new to play, and traditional games won’t necessarily sell as well as they would expect to!!

Post up some impressions :) Between your positive remarks and the gamefaqs board remarks I think I'll definitely have to grab this before I leave Japan.

They also have Brain Training for kids as a PS2 game. :lol

Thanks for always being on top of the numbers each week!

I'm surprised to see the DS jump by 10K this week. NOA needs to take notice and do whatever legal wrangling needs to be done to bring those Brain Training games to the U.S. :)

496k as of last week.

You should be able to count on another 20K this week combined. It's been steady about that number for a while, now.

People can criticize Nintendo all they want, but if one thing is for sure they DO know the handheld market.

Well it basically is a GBASP that plays DS games so why wouldn't people in Japan buy it. I told people that having BC on the DS was huge because the majority of the Gameboy audience is just going to move onto the DS. The PSP on the otherhand had no library from the start, hasn't seen any good releases, and its too expensive.

If you think about it though, how practical is PSPorn?

It wouldn't be wise to use it on a plane or bus, and in the privacy of your bedroom I the TV would be better. I guess it's good for bathroom breaks!

You couldn't even play them here in North America because of public decency laws, does Japan have similar laws?

hmmm I highly doubt watching porn in public in japan is acceptable behavior. One of my good friends taught english to schoolkids there, she was riding the train one day drinking bottled water and an old woman came over and scolded her. Aparantly it is considered rude to eat or drink in public. I can't imagine the reaction you would get to rubbing one out on public transportation :lol

Gpara confirms the software numbers.
The numbers are up on MC's website and the PSP number is wrong, every else is correct.

PSP - 20,390
GBASP - 11,176

Wow the differences between the Japanese market and US/European market are striking.

Nintendo's Japan business team seems to really have their eye on the ball. The Gamecube has basically failed to connect as a mainstream system in Japan for a variety of reasons: being 2nd fiddle to a monster like PS2, lack of games -3rd party support and Nintendo themselves struggling with keeping a constant stream of releases. Yet, even with a moderately successful flagship console they've managed to keep a diverse product linke (GC, GBAsp, DS, soon to be GBAMicro), remain profitable in hardware, and maximize profits from their software releases. They've also seemed to be able to figure out what it takes to connect to the mainstream audience in the DS (which I'm sure they'll try to recreate on Revolution).

It's really too bad NoA (I don't know about Europe really) seems to be stinking up the place. GC is going nowhere fast and DS is still suffering from an identity crisis. I really wonder what Nintendo plans to do in the USA (which is the world's most critical game market).

However I must say for me personally I haven't touched a DS or PSP native game in weeks now.... I messed with Nintendogs and the Adult Brain training game for a bit but I'm really hungry for more "classic" style games [action, adventure, and gasp a proper RPG would be REALLY nice]. Online feature in the previously mentioned genres would be a great bonus as well...

Ugh!

Another new all-time weekly low for the PSP. This is starting to get old now. When does Gran Turismo come out? Does it have a date yet? Will it even matter at this point anyway? And Sony can't really do anything with the price in Japan either, because that is already their cheapest region (retail price), and there'e not much room to try to lower the price.

Some highlights for the week:

PSP reaches 1.5 million LTD.
DS now has its largest ever LTD lead at 1,105,836.
DS has now won 12 straight weeks, and 15 of the past 16 weeks. (head-to-head with PSP)
DS has now beat the PS2 8 weeks in a row and 11 of the past 12 weeks.
PSP has now set a new lowest-ever weekly total in 6 of the last 9 weeks.
LTD: DS = 63.45%, PSP = 36.55% head-to-head
If you factor in the GBA, the PSP is only at 30% marketshare (handhelds) over the past 12 weeks. The GBA Micro should further eat into this number for Sony.

It's beginning to look like the real battle is between the DS and PS2. And the DS has even been winning that battle consistently for the past 3 months!

Oh no, PS2 doomed!!!!!!!! Maybe Nintendo should just cancel the Revolution if their fans are going to be crazily comparing DS/GBA sales to consoles. @_@

Ha ha!

I certainly wasn't trying to imply that the PS2 is in any way doomed. It has been a juggernaut in Japan (and the rest of the world). Its domination has been astounding, to say the least.

I was having a little bit of fun, because really, the DS/PSP battle has been so one-sided lately. And it is also interesting to see that the DS might be moving into the territory that the GBA used to hold, where the GBA and PS2 would both put up similarly huge numbers every week, and that pattern now seems to be taking shape with the DS and PS2. Anyway, thanks for the laugh. :lol

Don't over-react. The fact that the DS has outsold the PS2 for this length of time is what is being noted.

Yes, but the fact is that it's not very important and hardly relevant at all to the position of the DS. I mean no one ever says "PSP > GC for 6 months in a row" because it doesn't matter. Compare PSP and DS sure, but bringing in the PS2 does nothing but make the poster look fanboyish.

I don't think so. a handheld device which was supposed to be dead on arrivial (according to GAF posters) outselling the king in the console world is a pretty big deal.
