A North Carolina judge has temporarily blocked a law passed by the state's Republican-controlled legislature that limits the incoming governor’s powers over election boards.

A superior court judge ruled Friday that the law restricting the governor’s control over statewide and county election boards was a risk to free and fair elections, The Associated Press reported.

The law would split state and county election boards evenly between the two parties instead of allowing the governor's party to have a majority.

Gov.-elect Roy Cooper (D) sued Friday to block the law, which passed earlier this month, claiming the law passed by Republican legislators is unconstitutional as it violates separation of powers.

The judge plans to review the law next week, the report said.

Gov. Pat McCrory (R) signed the legislation two weeks ago in a move Democrats chided as a power grab to undermine Cooper as he prepares to take office on Sunday.

Like others are saying, this is optimistic.

But as long as there are enough Republicans who'd rather keep the filibuster than open up that Pandora's box, Democrats keeping a united front could blunt a lot of Trump and the GOP's worst impulses.

They need to earn those sixty votes.

I'm happy that the judge did this. The best thing the GOP in North Carolina could do would be to work with the governor elect instead of pulling power moves to stay powerful even though the voters rejected the GOP choice for governor in North Carolina in the recent election.

I think he was talking about judicial obstruction, which was another tactic the GOP rolled out in spades over the last six years: don't like a new law, or hell, an executive order? Sue the fuck out of it. Regardless of whether the court ultimately rules in favor or against, at least you've stopped it for months, if not years.

The Dems' best way of curbing Trump's power over the next four years is to lawyer up and win back a ton of state and governors' seats.
