Kotaku: Good Video Game Sex Scenes Are Hard To Make

Care to explain it.

In polish language Świerszczyk is a common name for a porn magazine

Anyway, yeah. Most of videogame sex scenes are pretty bad. Witcher 3 being one of rare exceptions. I like romance in videogames, but if they can't do sex scenes properly it's better to just cut to black.

That said, considering how insanely popular 3D porn made with videogame characters is getting, I think there will be lots of talent for devs to pick from in future :D

I think one of the things causing sex scenes in games to end up dumb and awkward is the directors approach to them. Sex scenes are always handled as "a special event". They're almost exclusively directed to be either super romantic or full on softcore porn (but still not too explicit so they just end up seeming repressed instead). Both end up feeling like some B-level TV drama. Even The Witcher 3 has this issue, and I think most cutscenes in that game range from "good" to "excellent" in terms of direction.

Look at how casual most sex scenes are in Game of Thrones, they're directed in a way that makes them come across as "just another thing humans do". I think if cutscene directors took the same approach, the scenes would end up way less awkward.

Yeah, I was actually embarrassed watching the ME:Andromeda scenes. I was praying nobody would walk in and see what I was watching.

This is as much as I need to see in games.

I bet Naughty Dog can make a great believable sex scene.

I await the first fully animated pornographic film from naughty dog. Sex scenes shouldn't be bothered with because at best it looks fine and at worst which is the usual case is laughable.

Thank god I don't have to see mannequins have sex like in heavy rain.

That was straight-up soft porn. No wit, not point to it, just a sappy pantomime.
The best Witcher sex scenes are the ones that don't focus on the sex at all and instead turn the whole thing into a comedic skit.

The original Mass Effect had the best "serious" sex scenes, avoiding all the awkwardness by making them brief and not very revealing, with most of the act happening off-screen.

Totally disagree regarding the "soft porn" part. The whole party, and everything up to and after the sex scene was straight out charming and well done overall.

Anecdote: my friends were playing Dragon Age and came across a gay sex scene with a dwarf. Right in the middle of it, I yelled "Nobody tosses a dwarf!"

Trying a make a scene that looks non awkward like that has to be a huge pain in the ass.

No one below age of 105 says that anymore ;)

Swierszczyk (means "little cricket") was a magazine for children and the first issue was released in 1945. As a joke people were referring to erotic magazines as "swierszczyk".

My name does not contain letters "sz" so even though similar it's not that. :p

Kind regards,
Pawel SwierCZynski ;)

99% of the time when a sex scene pops up in a movie or TV show I usually think "Is this really necessary right now?" It's generally the same for games, though at least you can sometimes control when they happen.

I was about to say, if theyre looking for some dedicated animators....

It'll totally happen sooner or later. I mean, a lot of people in that scene are doing the work pretty much for free, maybe making a few dollars for commissions now and then. For them it's because they like doing what they do. All a dev has to do at this point is send them an email and be like, "hey you want to actually make some money doing that?" And really, what harm would come from it? The dev gets someone who's already talented in animation and the animator starts making bank doing what they're passionate about.

I don't get this. Sex is such an integral part of life. We're okay with tons of killing, but it's actually the sex scenes that make people uncomfortable? Granted, they're harder to do in games, but there have been some incredibly powerful and beautiful sex scenes in movies and movies about sex.

Every sex scene I have seen in a game has done nothing for me. Similarly, I am almost never impressed with them in movies. If titillation is their goal then I am quite simply not interested. The best examples in movies are when they accurately depict how strange and awkward sex is... Maybe try that, video game developers. Or just, you know, stop.

It's not that they make me uncomfortable, I just feel like they are almost all universally boring. They rarely do anything to advance any of the narrative mechanics of their stories. They are just sorta there. Purposeless. Possibly providing mild titillation, but not much else. I have seen a LOT of movies, I have never seen a "powerful" sex scene. Unless you count rape scenes, which are obviously extremely powerful, and genuinely serve a purpose... however, I think we can probably agree that those two things aren't trying to elicit the same response.

Until video game intimacy stops looking something like this:

I'll never not feel awkward about it. Especially in games like Mass Effect where physicality and body language looks like some kinda hover hand meme or something.

I feel like The Last of Us is the best example of doing it right.

The original Mass Effect had what I thought were good sex/romance scenes. Didn't feel sloppy or awkward at all.

Well I mean....if we're honest..they're not realistic. I've yet to see a video game make it really realistic. Maybe close on an early buildup, but definitely not the entire process.

A good, loooong, love scene in a game would crack me up. Is there one (a normal game) that actually draws out kissing? Some good foreplay? A little extra-curricular activity...leading into the full act?

I'm thinking no.

Then you have those moments where you're practically ripping off clothes and nearly breaking things in the process. Haven't seen that either, lol.

You also have awkward, but fun(ny), sex which would be realistic...struggling to get a bra off...or underwear trying to stay on one leg as you try to shake it off....or just goofy stuff during the actual act.

They're not purposeless. I mean, they can be, but that goes for many scenes in movies. Or games. Have you seen the sex scene in Don't Look Now for example? In which the main characters are reconnecting through sex after dealing with a devastating loss. That's a powerful scene. There are more examples and I've listed a few movies on the previous page.

Games have a long, long way to go, but I don't see why they can't get there.

I've seen some stuff on the internet that looks scary realistic. You put the right budget and the right artist behind it and you'll get a damn good sex scene.

Is that worth the investment? I dunno. I'd certainly earn you some press coverage, that's for sure.

Entered the thread expecting to see Wolfenstein, glad to see it wasn't under represented. Those scenes were adult, and it treated the characters, and their sexual needs, as adult.

I generally dislike all kinds of sex scenes. They tend to linger uselessly and rarely transmit anything other than "sex is happening" for five minutes straight which is really boring and needlessly devoted to the ideal of a sex scene.
