And so the OP trains he trains in all the arts Muay Thai, BJJ, wrestling he even learns how to draw and exactly one year later on this very day he encounters the very man who had changed his life forever and sparked his desire to learn to how to fight and defend himself. Op gets challenged to a duel and finally is able to put his training to use and exact his revenge. OP immediately flys to his opponent to throw the first strike turning ssj2 at the same time but BLAM!! He got hit in the head with a beer bottle and gets knocked out and dies OPs name was Roberto paulson !!!

Right? They never do spears in MMA and I’ve always wanted to see it.

That's basically how GSP's takedowns worked, though:

A shot on someone in a fight looks a lot different than it does in entertainment acting wrestling, where they jump into the shot and ham it up.

Did you learn how to fight yet, Greedings Greedings ?

I've been pretty active with kickboxing and krav maga myself, noticing progress which is just great.
Last week for example I was sparring with this guy and I totally dominated him. Granted, it was his first lesson lol.

Still felt good.

Kickboxing is also the best cardio workout I've ever had, I'm starting to get in shape for real now.

Mildly funny story. I went to a local kick boxing gym and immediately twisted my ankle in the warm up.
I was so embarrassed that I never went back. Decided to work on my fitness at home for a couple of months before trying again.

Everyone is going to say BJJ and I’d say that’s the best route if you’re not particularly athletic and haven’t played organized sports at higher levels. A good athlete I would say start with boxing, it has more real world efficacy in the right hands imo. Obviously BJJ/Grappling and wrestling are foundational, but there’s a much greater chance of you taking damage in tight proximity with your opponent. This should be the final defense, not the first in most situations.

A lot of it is mental training, has nothing to do with the physical act of fighting. You have to be able to turn on a switch and immediately become a ruthless person. It’s hard to do actually. I love cute kittens and Shrek like anyone.

Don't bully the newbies! lol

Go back, no one is going to laugh at you for getting hurt in your first sessions. Happens to more people than you think actually.

That's curious, I think of boxing/kickboxing and other discplines as the foundational ones.

I haven’t seriously trained for years but I just always noticed that guys that were good athletes picked up boxing much faster. I can’t speak for kickboxing, I always thought you would have to train pretty extensively to use kicks effectively other than leg kicks.

I look back like Al Bundy too. I'm a fat slog too. But I've always been one of those chunky kids even in grade school. Put it this way, last time I worse a medium sized top was probably like grade 9.

I must have won 25+ fights and lost 4 times. I even remember who.... Frank, David, Mark and some older kid I think two grades up I didn't know his name. Just like I was an idiot trying to fight a kid 2 years older than me, kids are dumb at that age, so anyone trying to fight me despite me being thick and sluggish is likely going to be in a tough fight. When you got some size and mass at those ages, it helps a lot in a fight.

Looking back, there was a time I was in a scrap once a month. Not sure why. I guess we just pissed each other off at recess or in class. One great one was right in the middle of geography class in front of everyone. People were passing around a squirt gun shooting each other having laughs. It got passed to me and I randomly started blasting people like everyone else, and some retard comes at me.

Beat the shit out of him right in front of his girlfriend and gave him a small cut on his right orbital bone.

That's the last time he ever came after me.

Mine were mostly outside the bar kind of deals in my earlier twenties.
I never bothered anyone but was happy to go at anyone who bothered me.

There are certainly shorter ways as mentioned above and it's certainly not like in the movies.

I tried various schools as a teen, ultimately, I felt it didn't matter which style to go, important was, to have regular sparring with actual contact (this includes wrestling, by the way)

Outliers:
That Korean national thing, looks cool, but in practice felt like ballet to me.

Of several Karate schools I've tried (those were crazy times) Kyokushin was standing out as the most brutal and practical.

To OP and anyone else who wants to learn how to defend themselves:

BJJ. It’s easily the best martial art for practical advice, training and defence. There’s a good reason jiu jitsu forms the basis of training for a majority of police forces and military.

Forget Muay Thai, karate or any of the other striking arts. They’ll fail you on the street unless you’re very experienced and lucky. BJJ won’t. A half decent blue belt can take down a much larger untrained opponent with relative safety. Hell, a white belt with six months will know enough about getting an opponent to the ground and achieving a decent mount to end a fight pretty quick.

So the other day I got in an altercation with a stranger. The guy swung some punches and I managed to block them and push him to the ground, but I realised I had no fucking clue how to defend myself.
I was really lucky that the guy who attacked me also had no clue how to fight, but if my wife or child had been around, it could have gotten ugly. Luckily I was alone.

I’ve not been in a fight since I was about 13 years old, So, what’s the best way to learn? What’s the best combat to learn(boxing, jiujitsu etc) for self defence?
Right now all the gyms and stuff are closed where I am, can I learn at home with videos or is that all bullshit?

Thanks fighting Gaf.

Learning how to defend yourself is the best thing

Im ex-army and also know quite a few people in law enforcement. What armies or police forces use BJJ training? I’m aware of none.

Most often its enough to just appear dangerous.
Get ripped, grow a beard, talk calmly but with power in your voice, dress in aggressive colors (fire red) and other men will subconsciously be anxious in your vicinity while Girls will be secretly turned on, so its a win win.

UK, Australian, NZ, SA police forces all use aspects of Jiu-Jitsu. The escort hold is based on a Jiu-Jitsu grapple, for instance. As are a vast majority of cuffing techniques, and holds and locks used to subdue and arrest a suspect. The British Army are very keen on their jiu jitsu. It’s also taught in other commonwealth forces, and forces around the world. I can’t speak for US police or army.

These honestly barely qualify as military forces, not casting aspersions on BJJ but yeah, not seeing where that would be intelligent training for military in general. Police on some level it would be useful.

Before we go too deep into "My dad could kick your dad's ass!!!" territory...anyone who takes time to seriously learn how to fight, goes to the gym, etc. is going to do very well against a rando on the street, if the need arises. Weight and strength differences still exist, so don't take it as a guarantee, but you'd certainly be increasing your odds dramatically.

Shit, even working with a heavy bag or sparring partner will teach you the valuable lesson of "How hard can I punch a motherfucker and make it really hurt without feeling like I'm breaking my hands?"

Classic Krav Maga move 👌
In England it's just standard street fighting.

UK, OZ and NZ SAS/SBS are the best special forces in the world, they make US Delta force look like regular infantry.

Special Forces are great but I wouldn’t extrapolate that to represent your military though. Obviously SF, UDT SEALS, Recon or Ranger would dispute that, but comparisons of special units aren’t really what I’m taking about.
