As already mentioned, that's not true. And last time I looked the average temperature of Earth (you know, the whole planet, not just that 3% or so of it) is still on the rise. Climate change is the new term because people that wanted to not give a shit about the environment were misusing 'global warming' to argue that we're fine on the road we were on.

You are right that there are cycles, though. You're wrong that it's "just nature". It's a bizarre humility that believes our billions and billions of fumes, resource consumption, dumping, and so on don't affect our world.

A warming arctic causes a weakening of the jet stream via a lessening of the pressure gradient between the arctic and continental air masses because cold air is much more dense than warm air. Arctic air masses more easily flow down onto the continent, displacing the warmer continental air, thus giving us local weather that is much much colder than average while still being warmer than average globally. It's most likely what happened last year in Europe, and what's causing it to happen this year in the US.

In Minneapolis, the National Weather Service is forecasting wind chills Monday morning from 45 to 60 below zero. It calls the incoming cold air outbreak “historic”, predicting it will be the most severe since 1996. “Highs of 10 to 20 below and lows of 15 to 30 below are expected,” it warns.

The playoff matchup between the Packers and San Francisco 49ers at Green Bay’s Lambeau field Sunday evening may match or even surpass the coldest NFL game on record, the Ice Bowl (December 31, 1967) which was played at 13 below in Green Bay.

“Low temperatures may fall to 30 below over north-central portions of Wisconsin … Monday and Tuesday morning,” writes the National Weather Service office in Green Bay. “If you plan on being outside, be sure to dress warm using layered clothing if possible, as frost bite can occur in as little as 10 minutes in these conditions.”
