An American man started producing beer in his own gut after a fungal growth led it to produce high levels of yeast, a new study has revealed.

It describes how the 46-year-old's rare condition was only discovered after he was pulled over by police on suspicion of drink-driving.

The man, an unnamed construction worker, refused to take a breathalyser test and was subsequently arrested and hospitalised.

Tests showed he had a blood alcohol level of 200 mg/dL, equivalent to consuming around 10 alcoholic drinks.

The police and hospital staff refused to believe him when he repeatedly denied he had drunk any alcohol.

i believe it. for heavy alcoholics they are physically addicted. if you are a heavy drinker, it is dangerous to go cold turkey and cut off drinking because your body is so adapted to the alcohol. people who drink themselves into hospitalization are often discharged with the instructions that they need to pick up liquor on the way home because step by step reduction is the only safe way to do it.

I'm not registering to read the full story. From what I gather he refuses breathalyzer, was found to have ten drinks worth of booze in him, and his defense is his body makes beer? Sounds fishy to me. But if true, what a cheap date he must be.

This is the case report that this news article is based on
BMJ: Open Gastroenterology: Case report and literature review of auto-brewery syndrome: probably an underdiagnosed medical condition

It's a real thing

More accessible articles that go into the man's backstory

It is called Auto Brewery Syndrome and happens when they eat sugar as the Yeast eat it to create the alcohol.

Seen a documentary about this.

A low sugar diet helps them greatly.

onions and like chili peppers and garlic are antibacterial and are good when u need to clean house within ur system u want it nice and fresh and spicy. thats why they're so popular in hot/humid countries where its hella easy for bacteria to grow

I have seen something like this before on TV. A man could not eat any toast or bread because his body would turn it into alcohol.

Weird shit.
