Media Create Sales: Sep 7-13, 2009

Hm, Endless Ocean/Forever Blue 2 just sneaks in ahead of the original's first week (mixing trackers, I know...). I thought there might be a slightly more significant increase, but it seems there's a stable little niche there.

No problem. I guess we thought the same thing and started doing it at the same time. Hehe

Thanks.

When you refer to a "next gen" RPG, are you referring to "this gen RPG excluding handhelds RPGs"? Because I can see no other way your statement works.

Next gen = PS3/360. Was talking about the RPG sales for both those systems.

No hw numbers yet? Will we get them next week? It's Friday night in Japan already.
I imagine everyone in the Media Create office was at TGS. They might update the numbers when they get back, or they might leave it until Monday.

DSi 66,073
PS3 51,055
PSP 21,073
Wii 16,698
DS Lite 13,555
Xbox 360 4,965
PS2 2,723

M-Create, I mean.

Impressive gap right now between Wii and PS3. This almost looks surreal but almost, quite strangely, refreshing in the mean time. If PS3 succeeds in a way or another to keep a 25-18k weekly basis, more competition for Nintendo will hopefully translate into more effort when it comes to software in Japan.

Actually most people in these threads are rather pessimistic on the PS3 for good reason. Not sure why you're preemptively damage controlling. Or do I...

And dropping 3K is impressive regardless. Vesperia?

The previous week was 57k for the PS3 hardware right? If so pretty good drop only down 6k. Let's see if next week it stays above 45k.

Edit: It was 54k last week. My bad. They might still be a chance I'll sell around 45k next week...

If DS can do it after all this time, then it's within the real of possibilities. I doubt it'll go back to doing PS3 phat numbers for a long time.

If all DLC came tied to $13 figurines, I'd consider all DLC to be free

I'm still unsure whether this should be considered good sales or not...

First week sales (I'm using Famitsu for this):
Unlimited SaGa - 190k
Romancing SaGa Remake - 221k
The Last Remnant - 102k

... and as a point of comparison, since they're both Square second-tier series, the Mana series:
Sword - 149k
Dawn - 229k
Children - 105k
Heroes - 20k

Other SE:
Crystal Chronicles - 191k
CC RoF - 206k
CC EoT - 101k
Chocobo Mystery Dungeon Wii - 43k
Chocobo Tales - 29k
Chocobo Tales 2 - 20k
TWEWY - 81k
VP2 - 302k
VP DS - 73k

Non-SE, DS RPGs:
Contact - 6k
Luminous Arc - 30k
Suikoden Tierkreis - 62k
Avalon Code - 14k
Tales of the Tempest - 83k
Tales of Innocence - 106k
Tales of Hearts - 141k
Pokemon - ONE GAZILLION MILLION
Mario & Luigi 2 - 133k
Mario & Luigi 3 - 220k
Magical Starsign - 18k
Card Hero - 49k
Heracles DS - 24k
Fire Emblem - 180k

So, basically, I'd say that SaGa is near the top of the mid tier, not as big as the super high profile stuff and this installment is lower profile than the series was in the PS2 generation.

I seem to remember someone betting that PS3 wouldn't stay above 50k this week. Well, it did, but of course it will most likely drop significantly next week (I'd guess around 35k if they're lucky).

Vesperia did better than I expected -- I like to think that it's also because of the quality of the original game.

Edit:
Ah, yeah, that "< 30K is just about guaranteed" is what I was thinking about.

when will the price drop in japan happen? I am really curios how much market potential is left for the wii. Is it the same as DS or is it another case? How many people been waiting for a price drop to get a wii ?

October 1.

I expect it to do nicely for the rest of the year because of that. Same with the PSP.

I guess it's not bad, but we didn't get shipment numbers to make sure, did we?
First shipment from Famitsu:

SE - 155,000
AE - 14,000
Total - 169,000

Selling 90,000 to 100,000 would be between 53% and 59%.

Guess it can be considered to be a little below expectations if it's closer to 50%.

From the perspective of most of us foreigners, pretty much. We only know about Golden Week and Easter.

So do you suppose Tri is going to slowly limp to a million LTD, or fall short? I'm curious to see what effect the Wii price drop will have on it, if any.

Nice Tales of Vesperia PS3 sales :) The PS3 hardware sales seemed to hold up pretty good this week compared to last week.

I think it was first reported that the PS3 sales were around 57k last week.

EDIT: Yep, Edge did report that the PS3 sold about 57k, but the leaked Famitsu numbers had it at 54k indeed as you say :)

Very surprised PS3 stayed above 50K would be good if it could spend a few more weeks above 30K. Who knows maybe with FFXIII and GT5 we could see a significant turnaround, obviously not enough to overtake the wii but maybe enough to keep 3rd parties happy and put sony in a better position next gen.

I am surprised 360 is still sort of hanging there, i was kind of expecting the PS3 drop to cut it's legs out from under it and i still think that could happen. I wouldn't be surprised if next year the 360 just totally falls away i.e. less than 1000 a week.

Will be interesting to see how much of a boost the wii gets. More importantly it will be interesting to see where PS3 and wii bottom out.

PSP is also still looking pretty poor. Japan is you would have to think PSP's strongest region. Now it really is dropping off WW. I wonder what kind of effect this will have on sony's bottom line. PS2 and PSP have surely been propping up the PS3's losses. With both of them falling away that won't be happening anymore. If the slim isn't making a profit then the division as a whole will still be struggling.

Then you should say HD consoles (well, Wii can do HD to a less extent...), next gen are consoles not yet on the market imho (next = future)

Silver Week doesn't happen every year, no surprise barely anyone knew about it. It also appears some other hardware had a slight bump (most surprisingly the DSLite). X360 numbers look weird, though.

No new thread for this week?

So let me get this straight. People are arguing that the reason PS3 sales stayed afloat was this random holiday rather than Vesperia? I don't agree with that at all. The Wii didn't see any sort of growth that would support such a claim in the slightest. Neither did the DSi or PSP.

Is 480p concidered as HD? (or can the Wii do a higher resolution than 480p as well?). Serious question, i havnt really thought about this before.

But ye, HD consoles might be a better word for the PS3 and the Xbox 360 instead of "next-gen consoles" indeed as you say, i agree :)

Actually I wouldn't say it myself but if I had said HD consoles without even mentioning the Wii "higher" resolution I'm pretty sure someone would have argued with me about it :lol

I think this is the key differentiator between ToV's PS3 performance and Eternal Sonata's, for sure.

No, I think you are correct. Since we see no equivalent "boost" on other systems, I would explain the PS3 number as a "Vesperia bump" of 15-25k counteracting the sales slide from the heights of the price drop.
