Memories (the anime)

Yes, I know that it's hella old, but I just saw it for the first time, and WOW, it was awesome. The first sequence is worth it alone. One thing you just don't see in American animation is emotions conveyed that realistically. Also, the story was actually creepy enough to scare me a little. That's never happened to me with animation before.

If you haven't seen this, I HIGHLY suggest it. IF you're looking for something to compare it to, it reminded me a lot of Robot Carnival (I'd kill for that on DVD)

I've been hearing rumblings about a company trying to get it out on DVD for a while now. I can't remember for sure, but I believe it was Super Techno Arts - which would also explain why it hasn't happened yet.

Really!? If this is true, and it happens, I'll be one happy camper. RC is one of my favorite animes EVER!!

shoot, works for me.

where did you get it from?

I rented it, but you can get it a cheap (region free) import here....

http://www.discountanimedvd.com/detail.asp?dvdno=125

OR, you can get the US release (which is more expensive) here....

http://www.deepdiscountdvd.com/dvd.cfm?itemID=COL001256

It says that the one they're selling has both Japanese and English voice, but I can't confirm if this is true. Can anyone confirm this? Because the one I rented from Blockbuster was Japanese only, but it had english menus and the US release box.

Oh, and I found Robot Carnival!!!

The DVD is region free, but I don't know if these guys actuall have it in stock (I hate places that don't tell you up front. I emailed the first link, to ask if they do, if so, I'll let you guys know (after I order mine of course ;) )

From what I've seen, it's supposed to be dubbed as well...

The DVD came out in the US in February. I've been meaning to pick it up everytime I see it at Best Buy, but keep putting it off.

Amazon has has it here:

Best Buy:

It's even got some extras.. Anyone know what the "pilot films" are??

Available subtitles: English, Spanish, French, Portuguese

Available Audio Tracks: Japanese (Dolby Digital 5.1)
Theatrical trailer(s)

"Memories of Memories" making-of featurette

Interviews with Katuhiro Otomo, Koji Morimoto, and Tensai Okamura

Pilot films for Magnetic Rose, Stink Bomb, and Cannon Fodder

Widescreen anamorphic format

Liked the first one, loved the third... thought the second was very "meh."

Has the director of "Cannon Fodder" done anything else in that style?

No, but he has done Akira, and Ghost in the Shell ;)

Not quote. Katsuhiro Otomo directed Akira, but Mamoru Oshii directed Ghost in the Shell. Otomo hasn't directed a helluva lot else, but the anime adaptation of his manga Roujin Z is terrific, and Otomo's latest project, Steamboy, will be coming out shortly.

Meh, as long as it runs and looks fine. If it was coming out any time soon, I'd wait for an actual release though. Thanks for the heads up though.

ANN: Are there other titles Super Techno Arts will be releasing besides Jo Jo's? What's your release schedule?
Nomura: We are now planning to release a couple of videos like 'Robot Carnival', 'Crimson Wolf' and some Korean TV series came out in Japan before.

Super Techno Arts is a small very small company and could use the support which they won't get from a bootleg sale.

Just letting you and others know that the products there are bootlegs. That way those who do intent to buy official products aren't duped. I think it is better to just downloading a HQ AVI than dropping money on an unofficial product. Plus, subtitles are really bad on bootlegs unless the manufacturers stole the subtitles from the R1 DVDs. Video quality ranges from uber shit to decent to exactly copy of R1 DVDs if stolen from R1 DVDs. If you're going to buy bootlegs, you're better off inspecting the DVDs themselves for video/audio/subtitle quality. This means don't do blind purchases over the internet. Of course, buy the legit R1 DVDs sometime later on. There's forums with hot deals/cheapass buys section.

The official R1 Memories DVD has no dub. It was released by Columbia-Tristar who did not produce a dub for "Tokyo Godfathers" either.
