Mesaru Gear Solid

The circle is complete. Sony and Konami's bizarre cross promotion, which started with the Ape Escape "piposaru" monkeys appearing in Metal Gear Solid 3, has come full circle with a Metal Gear Solid connection for Sony's upcoming Ape Escape 3.

The new Ape Escape title will feature, in grand Ape Escape tradition, a number of mini games. The MGS connection comes about from one of the included mini games: "Mesaru Gear Solid." This is a dastardly pun on the name "Metal Gear Solid" and the word "Saru," which is ape in Japanese.

Mesaru Gear Solid is set up like an ape-filled MGS title, complete with sexy posters (of an ape in a bathing suit) and a storyline. An army of special forces piposarus has stolen Metal Gear. They demand 10 billion bananas in 72 hours, or they'll use the weapon. The government decides to send in Solid Snake, but the Metal Gear hero is nowhere to be found. Colonel Roy Campbell decides to call upon his old high school friend, Hakase (the professor from the Ape Escape series), who comes up with a plan to end this monkey business.

Taking the role of main character is Piposnake (another pun, this time with Snake mixed with piposaru). Piposnake is a piposaru that has been fed the tactical data of Solid Snake. He's a Sneaking Ape who starts off equipped with a banana pistol, complete with a silencer.

Piposnake's first mission takes him to Fort Banana which he must infiltrate in order to find Metal Gear and save other piposarus who have been captured. The fort is full of enemies, who will attack if they spot Piposnake. Typical of an MGS game, your best bet is to hide from your enemies.

The codec has a role in the game. The mini game actually begins with a codec communication between Hakase, Campbell and Piposnake. A later codec call features Snake asking for a response. Will Snake have a role in the mini game?

Just to make sure we're on the same level here, this is not a joke. It's unclear how much play time the Mesaru Gear Solid mini game will offer, but one thing's for certain: gamers in Japan will get another chance at tactical espionage action (prior to the release of Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistence, that is) with the 7/14 release of Ape Escape 3.

"banana pistol"

Needs more Pogo and the banana cannon. Actually, R* should just make a $30 "Pogo the Monkey" PSP game with the weapons and story as told in GTA3.

The long trailer for Ape Escape 3 that's running in Japanese game stores is hot. Music is good stuff, graphics look great, and there is a ton of variety shown in the levels and gameplay.

Ape Escape 1 was excellent, Ape Escape 2 was good but felt a bit like a retread, hopefully Ape Escape 3 rocks. Any new platformer in this day and age is a good platformer.

Did you play the PSP version? I think I need to play the PS1 version again to remind me how good it was, because the PSP version sucks major ass.

PSP version is butchered gameplay with one analog stick.

PS1 doesn't have the absurd load times and single analog stick control, only the same charming world and often brilliant level design!

I hope Ape Escape 3 turns out well

To add to what they said, Ape Escape 1 was brilliant for it's time (and no I'm never going to try the PSP one :p). The first game to use both analogue sticks efficiently and even use the push down button feature of them (for crawling IIRC); it was a unique platformer with fun levels and an interesting control scheme. Also catching goofy monkeys who are all parodies of things is a good game concept. Ape Escape 2 especially excelled in that respect.

In terms of actually making tough jumps and stuff it's no Mario, Jak, or Maximo. But the levels are often cool playgrounds and the chasing monkeys and stuff itself was always fun.

Ape Escape is not a OMG MUST HAVE kind of series for me, but they are enjoyable 8/10 platforming adventure romps (which are few and far between these days) so I look forward to playing them.

Oh and their mini-games are great :)

My biggest complaint about Ape Escape 2 is still the soundtrack. Ape Escape is one of my favorite PS games, and also had some real damn catchy music. I'd love a soundtrack. Anyhow, I loved how the music in Ape Escape would drop out instruments when you were sneaking around, effectively making the music sound quite different. Ape Escape 2 only muted the standard music, which wasn't as good as the music from the original.

So I really hope the music in Ape Escape 3 rocks my ass. That was some damn fine music, and sorely under appreciated if you ask me.

Ape Escape and Ape Escape 2 are awesome games. It's the other stuff involving the series that has always turned me off. And while the idea of sucking up monkey pants sounds like an instant classic, let's try to forget about Piposaru 2001, too. :)

Ape Escape on PSP isn't THAT bad, IMO, but the PSX version is clearly better, as the game was designed for the dual analog set up. I haven't spent much time with the PSP version, but it played fine to me, just not as well overall.

But anyway, now I cannot wait to play Saru Getchu 3. 7/14 can't come soon enough. :D

Brilliant :lol This sounds like it should be the whole game

I loved Ape Escape but I was a bit disappointed with number 2. So this bonus game is just another reason to get Ape Escape 3, IMO

If I've played Ape Escape 2 recently, is there any point in picking up the first one?

The first one is widely considered to be the best in the series. I'm not sure how welli ts aged since I haven't really played it since around the time it was released, but back when it was released it was one of the best 3D platformers available.

Make sure you get the PSone version though and not the PSP version. The game was built around the idea of using both analog sticks to play.

The one thing IGN got wrong is the story has nothing to do with Metal Gear -- it's Mesal Gear. :)

IMO, Ape Escape 2 was great. It was really simple, but it was clean, colorful, it controlled well, and most importantly it was FUNNY. Some of the names of the monkeys (in the Japanese version that is, never played the US one) were just hilarious. It came out at a good time, too -- same week as Super Mario Sunshine. AE2 made for the perfect, laid-back follow-up to two straight weeks of hardcore SMS madness. It worked out well. :)

Definitely gonna buy this on day one. Can't wait!

Ape Escape's soundtrack was by Far East Recording's Soichi Terada (also responsible for Fantavision's music), who dropped out for AE2. He returned for Gacha Mecha, though (as did Fantavision/Flipnic/AE1 designer Katsuyuki Kanetaka), which had as similarly a great soundtrack as the first and which did get an OST release, giving me great hope for AE3.

And Jonnyram [and, indirectly, 8bit], I'd suggest going through AE1 PSX again, it's worth it -- the dual-analog controls define the series, and stripping them (as with AE PSP) leaves a gaping hole. Once you're back in the saddle running at full sprint alongside your RC car and creeping to the muted music tracks (which were also dropped from PSP) you'll remember why you loved the first.

PS -- I have never wanted a forum tag as much as when I saw the BEAUTY&SEXY poster.

I found AE2 horribly lame. The voices and music were terrible, and I felt the gameplay [particularly the way the main character moved around] very last-gen. :\

Since there is no official AE3 thread I guess I'll just post this here:

All the various costumes you transform into for the stages. IE, in the ninja levels you will be in your ninja suit. Your weapons seem to change depending on the costume. Not sure if you get to choose between the guy and the girl or if the game forces you to switch back and forth.

Nah, the game plays perfectly fine...

The problem is that there are load times between every small area.
