Monkey Island Series Lands Anthology Box Set, Coming October 2020

The Monkey Island series is swinging back to PC to celebrate its 30th anniversary, specifically in a new physical anthology with Limited Run Games.

Few series are as synonymous with a genre as the Monkey Island series is with point-and-click adventure games. And while the series slowly approaches its 30th anniversary, Limited Run Games and Lucasfilm Games has revealed that the legendary series will be getting a ‘franchise-spanning anthology box’ on PC.

Revealed as one of the end-cap announcements of the LRG3 live stream earlier today. According to the image used in the conference (and the tweet from Limited Run) we can expect the following games to make it into the anthology pack:
  • The Secret of Monkey Island (and Special Edition version)
  • Monkey Island 2: LeChuck’s Revenge: Special Edition
  • The Curse of Monkey Island
You can see the Tweet from Limited Run Games, below:

It’s worth noting that this isn’t necessarily every game in the franchise. Notably missing from the list is Escape from Monkey Island (2000) and Telltale Games’ iteration. On the other hand, we don’t know that this is the final list — according to the announcement, more details about the anthology will be revealed as we get closer to the October 2020 anniversary. And hopefully, we will be getting some physical souveniers with this as well.

If you missed LRG3 2020, you can catch the entire showcase below — or check out our full breakdown of all the new announcements:

With a series as old as this, Monkey Island news tends to be few and far between. Last we heard of an official boxed release, it was all the way back in 2010 — specifically for Europe and Australia. When Disney eventually bought Lucasfilm Games in 2016 in a broader merger, the series creator Ron Gilbert made a plea to the corporation to sell him back his intellectual property:

The Monkey Island Anthology is expected to release physically on PC in October 2020; it’s also unclear whether this will be similarly heading to other platforms. We will let you know as more information becomes available, but keep your eyes peeled on Limited Run Games page for new announcements.

As much as I used to enjoy these games....

How many times is it now they have been re-released and repackaged?

With the exception of the monkey kombat section, I really enjoyed that game. I played the ps2 version, which was also the first "point and click " adventure game I ever played.
I know it has a somewhat infamous reputation, but I also loved it very much.
I also wrote a table on a piece of paper with all monkey combat responses, I would never do it nowadays, but it made that part one of my favorites.

Seeing it expunged from history with so little love is sad.

This is not a bad thing. I wish all publishers would care about their older games. It would be nice if you could be games from the 80s and 90s with ease just like you can with movies and music.

Wait, Escape was seen in a bad light or am I reading your comment wrong? Completing that game was one of the best memories me and my friend had gaming back on the PS2.

Had a guide that was the size of a fully published book to do it though mind you.

No normal version of Monkey 2?
Bah... The special removed the difficulty options and the intro credits. I love the intro credits theme!

I remember, around the time of release it was seen almost as a "black sheep" for the series, because of its puzzles (some were obtuse, I agree) but mostly because of the control scheme.
I could be misremembering, though.

As an anthology, it should really include every version in existence. But since entire chapters are missing, it's not really surprising.

I hope LRG can deliver a more complete package, it's a shame to lose such an opportunity.

EDIT: Waaaaait a second:

Welp, I retract everything!

I would say less times than Tetris, less times than Street Fighter 2, less times than Skyrim, and very soon, less times than GTA5.

I'd rather have a Monkey Island 5 (or whatever number it is technically within the series!) with a throwback to the animation and art- style of M.I-3

if he talks about books, you better damn well listen
Anyone know what the MI3 creators are doing nowadays? I was disappointed when I played it on release, but now I love it just as much as MI1/2. Would love to see a new MI with their involvement.

Good stuff. I grew up on the first two games. Third game was fine but a letdown after the awesome ending of 2.

I would totally throw down on a kickstarter for Ron Gilbert to make his version of 3. One of my dream games.
