Saw Hit Man at the cinema yesterday. I enjoy pretty much everything Richard Linklater makes, he's my favourite director by far.

Supposedly based on a true story - teacher moonlights as a hitman honeypot to help the police entrap would-be murderers-by-proxy. Turns into a sort of adventure/romance as he falls for one of his targets and helps her escape the law.

Plenty of laughs, and Glen Powell is just fantastic in this. Highly recommended (and released on Netflix right about...now).

Handling the Undead

I enjoy the works of John Ajvide Lindqvist (Swedish writer, he also wrote Let the Right One In), so when I saw that they adapted his zombie novel into a film I wanted to see it.

It's slow, austere, and largely quiet - providing space for the viewer to ponder events that don't expressly involve the undead. As with all good zombie fare, the zombies themselves serve as metaphors for whatever drama is inflicting a toll upon the living characters.

It's OK. Perhaps a bit too slow, and I think the filmmakers failed to adapt Handling the Undead as well as those who adapted Let the Right One In. Serious zombie films are also very rare in my experience.

Last night I watched a 4.5 hour super cut of the three The Hobbit films, where the editor took out all the subplots from the movie that weren't in the book.

The Hobbit: The Tolkien Edit

This edit mostly fixed all the things I didn't like about these movies - namely that they added in a bunch of subplots between Gandolf, Galadriel, and Suroman, seemingly just so they could get the actors to be in the movie. This also cut out the parts with Radagast the Brown, Legolas and his love triangle, and a good chunk of the "pale orc" subplot. The beginning was also totally redone so that the entire movie is no longer framed as a big flashback, giving it real stakes. It refocuses Bilbo as the main character of the film, and for the most part you're seeing the story unfold around him similarly to the book.

There were a few jarring cuts, but overall I enjoyed this much more than the original movies.

This passed me by, as I could never really get into Tolkien and have never watched the Lord of the Rings films, but today I learned they turned a 300-page children's novel into three three-hour movies.

I read the book when I was a kid. Must have been a huge stretch to get all those films out of it, so I can imagine the 4.5 hour version is a bit more focused.

I think I watched a three hour fan edit of the hobbit 3 films edited together years ago. I hadn’t seen the theatrical versions so it was my first time watching. I found it a slog till the talking dragon showed up. I know I wouldn’t of liked seeing it in the theater.

Godzilla minus one

If you're a godzilla fan, it's a great entry. If you have no interest it's still a great human story (don't watch the shitty dub either)

Robocop 3

90's was an interesting time in films, as the technologies evolved so fast everyone just couldn't stay in touch. It's very evident in here, aa they used cheesy projection effects and stop-motion after major films had already done convincable CGI. Everything about this film is cheesy and silly, but maybe that's why I had fun with it. I was laughing all the way through, both at the film and with it.

A side note, but it's strange how MGM released these films back in the day. They released all three films on Blu-Ray, but for some reason Robocop 2 does not have local subtitles, but 1 & 3 do. And at this point, I don't see MGM doing a rerelease or wordwide 4K print from it.

Beyond Reanimator

Jefferey Combs was amazing (as usual) but the rest of this movie was such a mess. Felt like an early-80s horror movie that was trapped in a 2003 production. Not even a few gratuitous tit shots could save this train wreck of a film. There was one scene where a zombie gets his dick bitten off, and his zombie dick fights with a rat. 0/10

I don't know what it is but Glen Powell has the most punchable face I've ever seen. Can't stand the guy. Maybe it's just the roles he gets but he seems like a massive douche.

What You Wish For was a very good foodporn movie with a twist, in some ways kinda like The Menu from 2022. Nick Stahl was very good as the lead and the rest of the cast also done a good job. Overall a very entertaining flick with some darker moments as the lead character ultimately does what needs to be done.

Blue Angels:
Interesting doc on the origin and training these pilots go through. Some incredible footage as well.
We all thought it was about 30 minutes too long, but no regrets taking the time to watch it.

Watched an insane movie with a friend recently, called The Hourglass Sanitorium. It's Polish dark fantasy movie from the 70s, hard to make heads or tales of the story but it a surreal film that operates on dream logic and hints at Jewish WWII generational trauma.

Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom

I have a feeling that they knew this movie wouldn't matter for the cinematic universe and it was the last hurrah for Snyder's awful shit fest so they threw abandon to the wind and just had fun with their gigantic budget. The final scene in particular reeks of this.

The movie was horrible comic-movie schlock of the worst kind, but it did manage to have a few truly funny moments and a few great fight scenes. I'll say though, if the rumors are true and Momoa is going to take a crack at Lobo in the new DCCU, I think he will do a good job. This movie almost felt like a demo roll for him seeking to be cast in that part.

I was going through movies to rent that were under $6 on amazon. I just watched a bunch of trailers. Several movies I want to watch but don't want to spend $10 or $20. They get put on the wait list.

I landed on Beekeeper. I knew the concept he was some CIA or hitman type of guy doing CIA or hitman type of things, but knew nothing else.
I thoroughly enjoyed it. It was probably my favorite Statham over-the-top action movie. I laughed or flinched at some of things he would put people through. I might end up buying it. Outside of John Wick movies, that might be the only other one in this genre to land in my library. I dig these types of movies, but I usually don't buy them.


Poolman looked like a great flick. I'm waiting on that to drop in price so I can rent it.
