Both work (although I prefer Automata) but my preference would have to go to 13 Sentinels. Truly a memorable and well-rounded story.

13 Sentinels is primarily story so the problem you’re going to have is if you’re not feeling it, there’s very little gameplay to take your mind off it. With Nier at least, there’s some fun gameplay.

I enjoyed 13 Sentinels for about 75% of the game, then it kept trying to shove in plot twists that it started to become tiring (also there are a few too many primary characters whose stories you have to sit through in non-chronological order, albeit the game does a decent job of keeping it coherent).

Also, 13 Sentinels is rupturing at the brim with every anime trope in existence. But goddamn that Morimura character model.

I think you do need to take gameplay into account.

Both stories are good. Neir is going to be a bit more philosophical. 13 Sentinnels is a structurally a fascinating way to tell a story where all the normal tropes and twists feel real fresh.

One is an action RPG with a great sound track. The other is a visual novel with a tower defense game built in (and its really not bad at all). Good soundtrack.

I'd probably say Neir as a better all around experience, but 13 Sentinels is absolutely awesome as well. Can't go wrong with either.

I'd go 13 Sentinels easy, but I'm not the biggest Nier fan.

This comes down to are you a person who enjoys VNs or not.

I’m HUGE NieR fanboy (and proud of it) but I would still go with 13 Sentinels, for me it was truly unforgettable experience.

13 Sentinels is good, but it's relatively short. I really liked it and I am a fan of visual novels overall, but I'd still say only pick it up if it's on sale.

Nier is also good, but much more of a time investment overall.

13 Sentinels. The story is amazing and lots of people say that, but I also really enjoyed the gameplay part of it as well. There are lots of battles and upgrades to sink your time into. Plus the artwork in the game is amazing as well.

Seriously both are great if not fantastic games depending on the person asked. I love them both, but man if I could experience 13 Sentinels all over again. It really should be ported over to everything, Switch, Xbox, PC, hell even mobile. Such a fantastic game, everything for me clicked. The story was incredible, the characters were great, the soundtrack fine, but man the art. There is nothing like it out there. And even though its a VN style of game its more adventure game style in that you can move your character around the screen(s).

I'm actually kind of stunned just how many ace titles Sega/Atlus has but they release once with little fanfare and then never touch again. Dear lord, get that ART out to people regardless of where they want to play. They could release cheap ports of Persona 3/4/5 and I'd stop what I'm playing and go through them again. Not counting friggin' Muramasa and Dragon's Crown. I'd buy 'em full price and gift them. Man what artists.

Man this is a really tough one, what's unique with both is the type of story they are telling can only be done with a Videogame.

Unlike say The Last of Us 2 which would make a half-decent movie or could quite easily be turned into a bargain bin novel. Neither of these titles could be done in any other format well, they realise that being a videogame means they are not as constrained by linear story telling as other formats.

This is something I wish more videogames would embrace, the fact that you can tell a story in a radically different way from other media. Out of the two I would have to say 13 Sentinals engaged me more, I would say Nier tells a story better but 13 Sentinals tells a better story so my vote goes to that.

Without having played or having a look at 13 Sentinels, I would say go with 13 Sentinels.

NieR Replicants reputation is higher than it should IMO.
It is a solid and interesting game with a darker story and unique characters, but gameplay wise it isnt anything that special, even after they updated they gameplay mechanics.
Of course it has a really good OST.
A big turn off for most people is that you have to replay it multiple times to get all of the story.. which can be a chore..
It is/was a PS3 game and the remake/remaster/HD/rerelease still feels like it too..

If your question would be NieR Automata or 13 Sentinels, definitely go with Automata..

That is a game I want to play and relive it again like in the first time.. which unfortunately is not possible..

Haven't got a chance to play either but have heard good things about both. This thread might convince me to finally pick one.

Replaying Replicant multiple times was a chore even when I used Cheat Engine on PC to get every single weapon needed for the endings. If I couldn't use Cheat Engine I would have just quit on it altogether regardless of the $60 I spent.

I played it on Xbox with a small help of a guide to make sure I didnt miss anything in part 1 and to find the missing weapons... only thing left is the Speed Achievement, but I just cant do it anymore... 😅

It's definitely a grind. I still need to finish that as well and play through the last of the new content. I took a few months off the game so I might be just about ready actually.

I can't believe you took the time to get all those weapons legit, especially the ones you have to buy for large amounts of money. You got more patience than me. The game is a fucking gate keeping slog haha.

you can do it!
I just cannot bring it anymore to play around 10 hours of the same game again when I already have a huge pile of backlog in my game library

Well there was one trick/cheat (which is somehow not that well known for the Xbox version) I used for the flower thing, which at the same time is a good way to make money.

Time Skip.
You can use the Xbox in Offline mode and just change the time and date (or only date?) and exploit the gardening to get the Moon Flower.

The legit way would take multiple weeks!

The money is nothing. It's farming the rare upgrade materials to get all of the weapons to max level that really puts hair on your chest. I had plenty of money for getting all the weapons and 99 of every item long ago.

Please dont remind me of this horror again.. a stupid braclet which can only be found on one type of an enemy which spawns very rarely and has a very very very very very very very very low drop rate...

Thats the thing. I dont want to farm and I dont want to kill anymore sheep. Nier gatekeeps its endings behind forcing you to do unfun activities to the point where people actively look for ways to circumvent them like using cheat engine or changing the time on their console.

The sheep is easy too, but you have to do it early in the game before they start dying off. If you hold down to charge that spell that shoots out a shadow hologram you can kill like 10 sheep in one hit pretty easily.

It's not for everyone! It is absolutely a grind to max out everything. The farming, I'd just do it for 5 minutes every day when I got home from work. On PS4 you could time skip 1 day. I think it took maybe a week or so.

13 Sentinels is definitely more generous with it's story.

Yoko Taro will make you fucking WORK for his story, but it's amazing.
