The animation is to smooth.
At that time, everything was keyframed, and not very well at that. Most movements were robotic, having only a few limbs and heads move most of the time. Even if the game was 1rst person, it had been unlikely the camera would had smoothly followed anything even in cutscenes.
Also, lets not forget the draw distance. Very few games allowed you to look beyond a few meters (especially horror games), and what lied beyond that was usually presented as fog or darkness.
