I recently rewatched spartacus. All four seasons (S1- Gods of the Arena - S2 - S3).

To start things off, I'd like to say this series will always have a special place in my heart. Haters gonna hate about the sex (although I do agree it's a bit too much at times) but if you can look past that, Spartacus is one of the best TV series of the past years.

Of course, not everything is perfect. I knew plenty of people who had issues with the quality of the CGI and the blood, especially the first few episodes. I noticed it too, but it's only a minor flaw of an otherwise great series.

Character development, for one, is great. You have good characters to root for, you have neutral characters to root for and hell, you even have villains you will root for. Just look at Batiatus and Ashur, two guys you loved to hate. And when you watch Gods of the Arena, you even feel some sympathy for Batiatus. Ashur on the other hand just seems like a nobody at first, but ends up being one of the greatest backstabbers in the entire series.

Ashur reminds me about another thing I like about this series as well: the plots. Spartacus gets a lot of shit for its "porn scenes", but the showrunners know how to make an interesting plot and story. It's gritty, it's bloody and there's a whole lot of backstabbing and betrayals... I love it. And don't even get me started about the season finales. DeKnight knows how to write a finale... the War of the Damned finale should be proof enough.

The show has some great "bromances too", albeit some of them have a rather sad ending. Varro + Spartacus was great while it lasted and it was great to see when Crixus finally joined up with Spartacus to attack Batiatus. And let's not forget Gannicus, Doctore and Agron. They may have their differences every now and then, but when shit goes wrong... everyone fights together as one.

ps: this does not count for Naevia v2. Such an awful character.

I'd like to give my respect to Liam too. I can't imagine how hard it was to take over Andy's role. I think people will probably agree Spartacus would have been even better if Andy was still alive, but that's not because Liam is a bad actor. In fact, I think he did a very good job, especially in S3. I just think Andy will always be the true spartacus for many since his performance in the first season was just... amazing. I'll always wonder how Spartacus would have been if Andy was still with us.

The final season was the perfect ending for this series though. Every actor at their best (although I still don't like what Naevia v2 did with Crixus). If you rewatch the final two episodes, you will know what I mean. They amaze me every time and I'm always in awe. Crassus, Caesar and even Tiberius were all great characters. Just thinking about the ending makes me want to watch the episode again. Spartacus might not be as "big" as Breaking Bad or Game of Thrones but it's certainly something special.

Unfortunately, a lot of people I know refuse to give Spartacus a chance. They just laugh it off as a porno show with bad cgi. Sure, it likes to show a lot of skin and the cgi isn't always top notch. So yeah, it makes me feel bad... not for the show, but for them. They will never experience the greatness of this show. To them... I have just one thing to say.

LiQuid!

I proudly and openly admit to wishing death upon the mothers of people I don't like
Show got hard to watch once Crixus started simping for that ugly chick.

Bad writing too, but whatever. I saw a dude get his face chopped off by a sword...

Not just any dude, Thats Gregor "The Mountain" Clegane.

Amazing show, Will rewatch soon.

Awesome series. The overuse of slow-mo (with all the actors screaming!!!!!) got corny at times though

Crixus' last scene was beautiful. Final episode had such awesome fights. Choreography for this series was fantastic.

This show was the best thing on my television in years, I wept like a manly man god with a cock to make jupiter jealous when it ended. The worst was knowing it was going to end badly, still wasn't ready to see any of my favs go. I took ashur the hardest honestly, I kept thinking he'd talk himself out of it. The only thing of note I disliked was the actress they used to replace naevia(crixus girlfriend). I also thought the show might have gone downhill with the death of andy but I believe his replacement I don't know the name of did a great job. I just need something to fill the void this has left.

There's rumors about a Caesar spin-off I believe, it better be true.

If they keep the tone intact I'd be so down. Caesar has some manning up to do after what happened to him at the hands of that little twerp/ This show really was so good in hindsight - also it totally has lucy lawless tits which should be enough to convince any xena fan.

fucking love spartacus!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

honestly i was so surprised by it, it took about 4 episodes and then it just clicked. i hated how they neutered fucking crixus in the later season though.

love how short and sweet the whole series is, it didnt go on for 8 season and thank you for that.

I quote it weekly, sometimes daily. Patiently waiting for the BR box set to release in the US to watch again and again and again

Such a great and underrated show! I loved all the seasons, with Gods of the Arena probably being my favorite. Also, the finale of War of the Damned was phenomenal.

After a rocky start, this show made a miraculous recovery. Andy's death soured the second season for me, but overall this was a badass and highly enjoyable show overall. Has Starz said anything about possible show about Caesar/Crassus, or is that thing just a pipe dream?

I thought it was a decent show. The plots weren't as great as I would have liked, especially the third season. I think the characters from the first two seasons were great, but they weren't matched in the final one.

I never been more surprised that I ended up liking something than Spartacus season 1. Those first I'd say 3 episodes (and at least half of episode 4) were really brutally awful. Like some teenager's even more immature take on 300.

Then something happened, the gears of the brutality started clicking into place to serve a purpose, the sexuality...well, that always remained excessive but began to also underline that brutal and horribly unfair nature of Roman society.

And that Crixus and Spartacus relationship. Dat shield jump is one of the best earned and most genuinely epic moments from any TV show.

But Season 2 killed it for me and I couldn't get into Season 3 after that. I hear others really dug how it ended up though

The prequel was decent, because at least it still had my man in it...

That's dissapointing. I suppose a worthwhile box set won't come for a long time.

Really looking to invest in bluerays rather than video files now, especially with ps4 game downloads supposedly being so hefty in size.

Yep, I hope they release a better box set some time soon. The US version hasn't been released yet so they might get a box set with extra's etc.

I think it's almost unanimous that the the first trio of episodes are complete ass, so glad I stuck with it. I still think the season one finale is the best (and most satisfying) finales I've ever seen, the shield jump gave me goosebumps.

I just got through Season 1 on bluray. If there's one thing to commend the show on (and there are a bunch) it's that the ending the first season was probably more satisfying than entire runs of most shows. After about the 5th or 6th episode where Spartacus' escape plot fails catastrophically the show just keeps moving, and moving and moving, no time wasted, everything is just progressing towards that amazing finale and what a finale it was! That freeze frame at the end when all the gladiators burst out of the gates and it zooms in on Andy, tears were shed.

If everything had panned out with Andy (RIP) and original Naevia staying on (her storyline is really hard to swallow with the change in actress) the show could have been GOAT status. As it ended up being, still a great series. Easily one of the most entertaining I've ever had the joy of watching.

Gods of the Arena was great. The rest was okay, but nothing beats that prequel season. Also, screw Spartacus and friends, Batiatus was the best character in the show.
