Can You Imagine What SureAI Is Going To Do With Garfield?
Update: Steve Harwell of Smash Mouth has unfortunately passed away at the age of 56.

There's a lot of articles on Twitter right now saying the lead singer, Steve Harwell, has severe liver damage and is only expected to live for a few days.

apparently liver failure from alcohol abuse. I ain't the sharpest tool in the shed but that still seems really young for that.

Thats the media and celeb life. Always tons of people dying early from booze, drugs, suicide etc... Too much partying or whatever they do in life after the show is over. Fuck, if I was rich and famous (I'm talking celebs in general as I dont know how loaded Smash Mouth guy is), I'd do my work during the day, and then come home to my big house, giant pile of money, slick house and car, probably got a maid to do all the cooking and chores etc... Chill out happy as a clam. Boozing and drugging is the last thing I'd do.

Believe me.

These days there are people who are 20 years old, who have end-stage renal failure, on dialysis from drinking too many Sodas.

Whew. Thank god I missed that bullet. High sugar intake from diabetes isn't something anyone though about in the 80s or even 90s I dont think (not in my fam at least). I've been loading up on pop since I was a kid. No health issues and aside from a few small preventive cavity fillings (the hygienist and dentist says lets do it now before it gets big) I have never had a real cavity filling. Somehow I still have all my teeth too!

My dad would bring home 24 pack cases of orange CPlus and Hires rootbeer like modern day people buy cases of water!

The problem is that because of that fame, friends come offering you fentanyl or some drug, so that you "relax or experiment" if you don't take it... You're not cool..... And like idiots taste the drug under pressure social.

Not cool. And not something I'd ever do. I've had my share of friends saying here's some cigarettes, weed, ectasy pills etc.... Nothing hardcore or anything I admit. Nobody has ever offered me fenatyl or cocaine. But still I deny. I have never lost a friend due to this. Everyone knows what I'm like and what I like and dont like. And they are ok with me saying no.

If some people are pressuring anyone as a take it or leave be cool or a friend or not, fuck em. Get lost.

Exactly... And it's a great point.

There are some actors who don't let themselves be carried away by drugs or pressure... And they managed to have a good life.

My first concert was Sugar Ray and Smash Mouth. I was a huge smash mouth fan back in 1999.

My mom won tickets from the radio and took me. Sugar Ray was dope. But Smash Mouth. Man it sucked. Dude was rude the whole show. Talked shit about my city and how it sucked and how he wished he was anywhere but. Just a bad time. Ruined the band for me.

A few years back, something similar happened and they basically forced the singer into rehab or some shit. I wasn't surprised.

I'm surprised he badmouthed your city. I never followed SM (always thought the band and songs were cheesy as hell) but to me the band seemed like a straight laced pop band. Not an edgy rebel band trying to piss people off for laughs or make non-serious jokes.

Depending on the drinker and their consumption habits, liver/renal failure can happen pretty quickly.
When I was 32 I experienced an esophageal hemorrhage from my drinking. Of course that brush with death didn't stop me and by 2 years later I was in early stage renal failure.
Got clean at 35, and 12 years later my liver/kidneys are fine.

I was lucky, extremely lucky.

when you're young, I guess it didn't make sense not to live for fun

So no transplant for him? Weird.

Also dying from liver failure is painless and if I can say it myself rather euphoric experience.

AFAIK, the transplant list is long and would discriminate based on age and addiction issues in the US. If one is available, great, but if not you're going to probably be last on the list if you're an older alcoholic

Well, keep drinking alcohol my guys and sodas. Certainly won;t catch up to you, no matter how much you drink. "bbb...ut...my..grandpa smoked and drank all day and he was 90!". Good luck winning that lottery. Americans obsession with both of these drinks is crazy. Corporations are really mind-controlling everyone huh?

Well I got it here in "Europoor" region in a week, I understand that he is older, but still should have enough cash, for doctors to don't care about it.

He could also have a concurrent medical condition like stage IV cancer that could disqualify him from receiving one. Just all speculation though.

Americans drink less alcohol than Europeans.

Entertainers are immersed in party life 24/7/365. It’s not a recipe for good health.

I mean...yeah, you're right, but I think here is more of a culture thing rather than a corporate thing. At least in eastern europe, italy and other places, alcohol, especially wine, is something passed down. Wine is arguably better but it's still not healthy as people make it out to be. But then again, we digest plastic particles every day so, eh, I should get off my high horse.

I was always amazed that there were a couple of court cases to try and blow a liver on people dying of a stage 4 cancer. (The one in England actually worked and the lady literally died on the operating table. What a complete waste of a liver.)

This is a hell of a way to go. I watched a close friend go this way and it's awful, you get dementia all your memory and cognition is all fucked up. Eventually they put you on dialysis and get you lucid enough to say goodbye to your family and friends and then a week later you're gone.

We've been seeing the signs of this with this dude for a while, he has been confused on stage and unable to perform. I'm not gonna miss their music but my heart goes out to his loved ones.

Off-topic, but the past few days I have gone down the rabbit hole of figuring out the best way to get water that isn't full of microplastics. All because I need a new pitcher filter and decided to look at alternatives. On-topic, while procrastinating to solve my water problem, I'm drinking soda out of aluminum cans

Europeans drink more alcohol than Americans, but Americans have that really horrible and destructive binge drinking culture in teens and 20s that Europeans don't. I think that's where a lot of the damage is done, and if you set it up like that young, well the years start coming and they don't stop coming. It ruins some chunk of people for life.

Holy shit, this is insanely sad. I have a musician friend in San Jose, and it’s been pretty well known that Steve has been a steady alcoholic for most of his adult life. I’m sure getting kicked out of Smash Mouth didn’t help that at all, either.

Weirdly, All Star came on a random playlist yesterday while I was cleaning. I never really listen to Smash Mouth so I found it kind of peculiar, but I love that song so it was cool.

But man, this is absolutely tragic. I’m not a huge drinker, but I could stand to consume less. I think I’ll go the rest of the month without a drink in his honor, at least. Rest in peace, Steve.
