*** The GAF Precognitive Review Score Project ***

Well, it's patently obvious after the Halo 2 scoring furor that our precious, talented forumgoers have the amazing ability to predict what scores a game SHOULD get well before they've played any significant portion of it.

It would be a SHAME not to leverage this psychic prowess for good, so rather than allow reality to be shaped posthumously by dilettante reviewers, I propose that we start the GAF Procognitive Review Score Project.

The rules are simple. I'm going to list ten popular forthcoming titles in this post, and you, the Blinx Two-esque Masters of Time and Space that you are, tell the rest of the world EXACTLY WHAT THE SCORE IS -- NOT "WILL BE" -- *IS*. When the game is released, we'll average up the scores, and the END RESULT WILL BE GA CANON.

That's right; whatever the AVERAGE INDICATED SCORE for the game is will be the ULTIMATE OFFICIAL SCORE over anythng put out by Gamespot, EGM, IGN, or whathaveyou. This is the GAF FIAT SCORE, and it *is* reality.

This score is official because you have massively evolved minds capable of understanding complex quantum permutations, reducing the potentiality of any given game at the moment of its very conception to a single scalar value. Can those EGM tards do this? No. You, however, can, and it behooves the less gifted among us to accept the results of your transcendental genius as more than simply the way things ought to be, but in fact as THE WAY THINGS ACTUALLY ARE.

So, here goes. I'm going to list ten games, and you put your fingers to your temples and give us the scores. Scores must be on a 100% scale -- but you already KNEW that, of course.

1. Final Fantasy 12.
2. Dragon Quest 8.
3. Donkey Kong's Jungle Beat.
4. Geist.
5. Rumble Roses.
6. Virtua Fighter: Cyber Generations.
7. Super Mario 64x4.
8. Ridge Racers (PSP).
9. Knights of the Old Republic 2.
10. The Legend of Zelda Gamecube.

Channel your biases into the ether and let the amazingly early judgments roll like the inexorable tide of GAF opinion they are. To discourage false prophets who might offer say a "1" for Zelda in the hopes of influencing reality unfairly, I will give a copy of Outrun 2 to the person whose scores most closely match the average.

REMEMBER, THE RESULTING AVERAGE SCORE WHEN THE GAME IS RELEASED IS GAF CANON. If you choose not to deploy your massive mental advantage in favor of sneering proletarian humor, then you forfeit your vote -- and a chance to play the amazing drift racer, Outrun 2, called by this forum's own ISAMU as "the closest I'll ever get to experiencing orgasm".

EDIT: Remember, this isn't a game of prediction; you're actually REVIEWING THE GAME.

drohne

hyperbolically metafictive
i've always found the business of actually playing games superflous to the business of having opinions on them. really anyone with a bit of sense and experience should know exactly how good a game is once they've seen a trailer or read the odd preview. on another message board i've been reviewing movies i haven't seen. i'd been thinking of doing the same for games, here. but there are so many gafers with underdeveloped senses of irony.

anyway, i've already got outrun 2, so i can editorialize rather than prognosticate:

1. Final Fantasy 12. - 7 (brilliant soundtrack, typically inchoate matsuno plotting, unpleasant whiff of mmorpg combat. but on the whole less repellent than the rest of the franchise. femboy vaan, however, is just as repellent as the rest of the franchise.)

2. Dragon Quest 8. - 4 (primordial. bad art. bad genre.)

3. Donkey Kong's Jungle Beat. - 5 (a silly, self-defeating idea that'll be cute for fifteen minutes and irritating thereafter.)

4. Geist. - 2 (scheisse.)

5. Rumble Roses. - 6 (wrestling is stupid. the girls are ugly. but it gets points for shamelessness.)

6. Virtua Fighter: Cyber Generations. - 2 (oh god why.)

7. Super Mario 64x4. - 5 (do nintendo understand why mario 64 was good in the first place? the controls won't entirely destroy a lastingly brilliant game, but they'll come close.)

8. Ridge Racers (PSP). - 8 (it's ridge racer, and the track selection seems excellent. but the nitro and the shitty textures take some of the shine off.)

9. Knights of the Old Republic 2. - 7 (objectively good. but i find it dull.)

10. The Legend of Zelda Gamecube. - 6 (someone save this franchise from its miserable dotage. by ending it.)

i deplore percentage scores for their false precision. feel free to multiply by ten, though.

1. Final Fantasy 12. Excellent, long, tons of side-quests. But the "twist" ending with the main character's father was both predictable and ultimately disappointing. 80

2. Dragon Quest 8. Kiddy. 68

3. Donkey Kong's Jungle Beat. While fun for a while, the gimmicky nature of the controls ultimately grows tiresome. 73

4. Geist. Incredible, gorgeous graphics. Brilliant play control. The most innovative, enjoyable, and worthwhile shooter I've seen in many years. Better than Halo 2. 43

5. Rumble Roses. Hawt. 70

6. Virtua Fighter: Cyber Generations. Have you seen any sailors? 62

7. Super Mario 64x4. Turned out to be a platformer instead of the monster-truck game we were expecting. Don't know what Nintendo was thinking. 30

8. Ridge Racers (PSP). Brilliant. Ingenious. Tartar-destroying. 81

9. Knights of the Old Republic 2. Better than the first. The "two-path" system really shines in this one. Strong story, excellent pacing, terrific game. But what was up with all the bugs? 79

10. The Legend of Zelda: Sitar of Justice. Best game of all time. In this unbelievably innovative adventure, you can not only ride a horse, but use a sword at the same time. In a first for this genre, you can play a sitar too. But not while riding the horse. That was really my only minor nitpick, and dropped the score by a percentage point. Great graphics, and fighting against Ganon and the imposter Zelda at the same time was incredible. Terrific twist at the end with Link's friend Joe turning out to be Zelda in disguise. Oh yeah, don't read the preceding paragraph if spoilers bother you. 999
