So why didn't you get a Radeon 9800 Pro? That was the clear choice back then wasn't it?

Edit: Mmmh, no, 5900 Ultra seems to be much better. Guess I'm thinking of the 5800 still.

Meh, I wasnt assembling them myself back then. I remember that one though, when it arrived it had a bad fan, and I had to add another mechanical drive later on for storage space. Hilarious to see those components cost that much now though.

Edit: Eeesh, I guess Monarch folded, their website is gone, lol.

Yeah, that is when ATI really started to come around but back then I was an Nvidia Fanboy so it was Nvidia all the time. These days it's about who has the best product for the right price.

The 5900Ultra was much better than the 5800 though which was kinda a bust.

I'd look up the price and parts for the Alienware I bought in 2002 but I think it would just make me feel shame.

Yeah I had a 2000 dollar Alienware before I built the one in my OP. I feel dirty thinking about it now lol.

Were P4s ever competitive with their AMD equivalents?

At least now we can count on most big releases using the same engines for 5+ years. My 4 year old e8400 + 4870 are still mostly competent, minus dx11 stuff.

I remember spending somewhere in that ballpark for my old AMD 2100+ system a year or 2 before that. Amazing how component prices have dropped.

My last computer was a single core as well. AMD 4000+, which was basically the largest single core processor they made (iirc). Dual cores came out shortly after. I skipped all of them and went right to quad core.

God, prior to a build last year, I hadn't built a machine in 5 years or so. I remember that last one had a 9800 Pro in it, but I don't remember much else.

5900 Ultra?

I'm not sure how anyone sane could have gone for the 5xxx series after the 5800 debacle)

LOL I admitted to being a Fanboy earlier. Not anymore haha. To be honest though the 5900Ultra was a great card for it's time. I remember being blown away by FarCry on it.

This one hurts the most. The current equivalent is about 8GB that costs $40. I can buy 32GB for what I paid then.

For reference, one of the best budget/mid-range builds, and my own first build, from 2004 included this:

Athlon XP-M 2600+ mobile, which would destroy a stock 3200+ when OC'd and paired with this mobo:

ABIT NF7-S V2 462(A) NVIDIA nForce2 SPP ATX AMD Motherboard

Patriot 1GB (2 x 512MB) 184-Pin DDR SDRAM DDR 400 (PC 3200) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory Model PDC1G3200+XBLK

Leadtek Winfast Nvidia 4400 TI 64MB ..... Followed a few months later with a:

XFX PVT43ANDF7 GeForce 6600GT 128MB 128-bit GDDR3 AGP 4X/8X Video Card

Maxed the shit out of early Source engine games.

Look out, I was a badass over there! ;)

I built my first computer in 2003 as well. Athlon XP 2600+, if I remember correctly. Paid for it with cash from my student loan. Cost me about ~$600 (converted from Indian rupees) for everything but the graphics card.

So why didn't you get a Radeon 9800 Pro? That was the clear choice back then wasn't it?

Edit: Mmmh, no, 5900 Ultra seems to be much better. Guess I'm thinking of the 5800 still.

The best VFM card was the 9500. Had to import a 9500 non-pro from the US for about $200. Unlocked it to a 9700 Pro using a softmod. Such a great card.

Remember when the GeForce 4 ti4200 64mb version was a faster than the 128mb version? People used to say we don't need the extra 64mb ram back then.

I also was able to scoop one up for 70$ back in the day and play a lot of Medal Of Honor.
