Imagine in an alternate timeline: we actually saw Nintendo go the Switch route much earlier?
In 1999, the boardroom at Nintendo acknowledge their handheld lineup is doing really well, but the N64 just can't shrug off the new Playstation.
With Bill Gates threatening to get Xbox into the living room and SEGA is on the verge of collapse, Nintendo President Yamauchi suggests a radical idea.
Gamecube is cancelled, and all projects are moved to the Gameboy successor.
Except the successor is not "Gameboy Advance". It's actually one of their unreleased prototypes. In this scenario, lets pretend it has all the same power as the N64, but you can play it on the go and connect to a TV.
All this processing power boosts the launch price to $199 in 2000.
Would you have bought the "Proto-Switch" or think it was a good idea?
