When the gaming we enjoy so much will end

Thinking about this all of sudden. Gaming is a wonderful thing to me but it will end. It is a thing in this world, and it is wonderful. Gaming is a thing just for awhile.
Not anything specific in this thread just thinking about this. Now how about you?
A LITTLE CLARIFICATION: In a sense of physical reality I mean, the end of Universe and gaming with it. The thought is that gaming is only for a awhile.

The same is true for life itself.

Gaming won't end, it will just continue to evolve. Eventually we'll have full holodeck simulations.

I guess you mean the package sold to a player for an upfront price that contains a beginning, middle and an end?

Yeah, that's going to shrink, but not disappear.

Why would gaming end? I knew a kid in high school and his 70 year old grandparents were playing the shit out of Wild Arms 3. It only ends when you decide to stop playing or you die.

Gaming either ends when humanity does or if there is a civilizational collapse, at which point, gaming will be the least of our concerns.

What ya mean with end? You die in the end or something? Everything has a beginning and an end, thats nature.

Seriously, retirement home gaming will be spectacular.

100%

I mean - when we retire are we going to sit around and play bingo or some shit? Work on our model railroads?

Nah, Quake3 LAN tournaments erry Wednesday down at the Senior's Center - we'll show those fortnite playin' whippersnappers how it was done back in '98.

Maybe marathon 40K games on weekends.

That's not something we, sitting here thinking using our physical brains that will die in a matter of decades, will ever have to worry about.

Maybe when Elon Musk’s neural implants can make us experience the satisfaction and endorphin rush of playing a game without needing to actually play a game.

OP, never chop up your jazz lettuce on a copy of Starfield while sitting in front of a lava lamp, thinking Deep Thoughts, and then decide to post. It's just not worth it.

Now I’m imagining Melee tournaments in retirement homes. If the smell was spectacular when all attendees were young, imagine when it’s all octuagenarians shitting themselves while playing and shouting till their dentures fly off their mouths.

10-15 years ago it really felt like multiplayer was completely taking over. I used to play a lot of mp back when that meant playing Atari 2600 Combat and Warlords against my friends sitting next to me on the couch, and later Doom II and Quake on the LAN at work against my co-workers, shouting down the hall at each other. I got my first PC at home in 1999 and at that point mp meant playing on the internet against random anonymous fuckfaces, and a lot of them I just couldn't tell if they had way too much practice time on their hands or had actual cheats installed, and it stopped being fun. I stopped bothering with any mp crap shortly after Halo 2 released. For a few years it really did feel like solo games were heading toward extinction, but thankfully that crisis was averted. For the past few years it's been the rise of Soulsborne knockoffs, which I simply do not have the time or patience for. 30 years ago, I felt like the only games that really weren't "for me" were sports games and Barbie Horse Adventures or whatever, but as time goes by there are definitely more and more big mainstream games that just aren't designed to appeal to me. I like to assume there will always be classic style single player games being made for the rest of my lifetime... which is probably another 25 years maybe, if I'm lucky. =P

If the whole "our world is a simulation" theory turns out to be true though then technically our entire existence is a sort of game.
It's pretty Pay 2 win though.

I mean ok sure, sure some things will change a bit.

Will prolly want to swap out the Ritalin/Adderall for Cialis and drop the Monster energy drinks for Prune Juice at some point.
Don't forget the sudo cream.. 👀

ill be passing out powerful painkillers - a side hustle to continue gaming with the geriatric gaming gladiators
A few Co codamol, Tramadol and a glass of scotch will do me 👌

You just reminded me of VR. Sod it, when I'm in a home just stuff a VR headset on me and one of them mouth pens :messenger_tears_of_joy:

I'd say arguably in some respects gaming has already ended, now we are in a period of time where half-baked games are the norm, and games like Policenauts, Metal Gear, Burnout, Blur, Afterburner, Motorstorm a decent tennis/football game, Deus Ex, a decent Mass Effect game .....games like these are next-to-non-existent today...

Imagine spending $69 billion on a publisher when the heat death of the universe is coming.
