Ys Origin (PC/Steam) |OT|

I have a kind of odd question...is there a way to remove the NO FALL (F1): ON/OFF display in the upper right corner of the screen? It seems like unnecessary clutter for it to be showing all the time since the option doesn't really do much in this game.

Aside from playing on Normal or higher, I'm afraid not. Sorry about that.

I reached the 21st floor (Mantid's Chamber) boss as Hugo and I feel like I'm doing it wrong. It takes very little damage and the fight goes on forever, only for me to die/get a bit bored. I'm about to retry it, though.

Anyway, I love the Falcom jingle at start-up. It's really nice.

Yup. This is probably the worst boss I've had the displeasure of fighting. It is not fun at all, which is saying something, since all the bosses before it were good. At least I enjoy the boss music... I guess I'll just gain another level.

Also, I hope OiF goes on sale during the summer so I can buy it for someone else to enjoy. Maybe even an Ys Double Pack for $20 or something.

EDIT: Okay, I think I was just really underleveled. I easily gained three more levels after saying "fuck it" to grind. Made the boss much better. It was even fun now.

Someone's playing on easy. :p

Any reports to how these games sold on Steam? Successful venture for X-SEED and Falcom?

I did the same thing yesterday. I was level 39 and he was super hard, managed to beat it like that on Yunica and it was really a challenge, got to level 40 and it was easy with Hugo.

I've read that XSEED apparently said they were happy with Oath's sales at one point, but I never saw that myself. Don't know if they've said anything else or not, regarding either game.

I kind of wonder if the price increase hurt Origin at all, since it didn't do near as well on Steam's top sellers list. It's a new localization, and even though each character's story is shorter the game has more content as a whole. But how many people know that, or care?

And it's always funny when people find Pictimos difficult. He's one of the easiest bosses in the game in my opinion, beat him on my first try on hard mode. But I'm sure there are some people who feel the same way about Klonsclard, which is a total nightmare for me.

Speaking of nightmares, I don't think I can do this game on that difficulty. Which is kind of unfortunate, since hard mode really wasn't that hard outside of a few bosses. Nightmare is too big of a jump in difficulty though, Wailing Blue was fine up to the first boss, but I don't have the patience to deal with dying in 3-4 hits to a boss.

I remember them saying that on their own forum.

Considering they have steam achievements they should try to get in on the steam summer event. (but then I guess everyone is trying to get in on that)

Also Ys Origin got overshadowed at launch by the outstanding Humble Bundle and then E3 hit.

That and no one else has reviewed it.

Actually, quite a few people have reviewed it -- they're just mostly smaller gaming blogs. Do a Google search for "ys origin review" and you'll find a half-dozen different very thorough, very positive reviews of the game (and one negative review from a guy who seems to think the game has too much story, too many puzzles and not enough tutorials). ;)

Would be nice if a few more of the big guys gave us a look, though. Thank you, BTW, for the eloquently-written review, Macstorm!

Is there "extra" stuff at the end of the game besides multiple play throughs with different characters? I enjoyed Ys Seven and was considering grabbing this for a weekend game.

Yeah, this game went crazy with extras. In addition to unlocking the third playable character, you also unlock Time Attack and Boss Rush modes after beating the game once, then Arena Mode (survival challenges against huge hordes of monsters, basically) after beating the game once with each character.

From Arena Mode, then, you can unlock "EX" versions of each character (which play very differently), as well as two different versions of Adol (Napishtim and Felghana) for use in Arena Mode, Time Attack and Boss Rush.

And then there's also an alternate schoolgirl outfit for Yunica, too.

Oh, wow...Well then! $20 sounds like a LOAD of content! Thanks

So what should we be looking forward to next after Origins? There is that new Ys game for the Vita that would look pretty slick on Steam. :D

We'll get the stuff already done for PC before we ever get Falcom picking the PC platform back up. There's a ton of great stuff yet released over here, though, so I'm not trippin'.

I'm completely okay with that. I guess TitS would be the next thing to come.

I paid good money for this Dynex!
Wish I was still freelancing, so I could spread the good word. But I'm not.

So here's my review:

Ys Origin is sweet. If you don't like it, go eat a dick. Or if you're a girl or 1/10 guys then uh... go smooch on a muff. Do the sexual things you don't like!

9/10

My guess is something like this:

Napishtim > TitS: FC > Xanadu Next > TitS: SC > Ys I & II > Dinosaur Resurrection > TitS: The 3rd > Gurumin.

I think that covers all their modern PC work up until the PSP and Kiseki took over.

They need to rock a sale on Oath so they can get a little spot light before the big summer sale happens. Get some of the spotlight to themselves and not lost in a jumble of bigger name titles.

Also, I'm totally not saying this because I am cheap and want to save ~5 bucks.

I'm seriously hoping for Ark of Naphistim. I'm sad the PSP version's not on PSN. I'm spoiled by having Xseed's PSP Ys games on my VIta. :3

Beat the Game on Hard/hard Boss Rush Mode with everyone. Don't think Im gonna Nightmare the game like i did with Ys Oath. Steam Sale coming up >_<

It also went head to head with Max Payne 3 and a bunch of other stuff when it came out. It actually charted pretty well given what it was up against, I think; it's worth remembering that Recettear basically never went substantially above 4th place in our release week , and we still had an excellent first month. It all comes down to what's competing with what in any given week.

So I'd venture to guess that Origin did at least as well as Oath did, although the total lack of "big" reviews is baffling. Tom, I assume you guys sent out review copies to all the usual suspects, yeah?

Oh, of course we did. They must be spending too much time basking in its godly glow to write a proper review!

Also, it might be best not to postulate sales numbers. I can't give out that kind of info, of course, so you're free to assume it did numbers equal to or greater than Oath if you want... but when you say things like that, they sound so official, what with you being Mr. Steam and all. Could give people the wrong idea, you know? ;)

We will not be IGNored! We'll get ourselves a good GameSpot on some site, because we're GamePros over here, and we know how important it is to have reviews posted G4 it's too late.

Actually, I requested a copy via your PR firm and received a "request noted" reply, but never got a code. I bought mine, so maybe these big places are still waiting? Shame, since IGN's been raking in the exclusives on The Last Story. Not jealous or anything......

Really wish I was still freelancing for 1up so I could just go ahead and review this. I want to spread the good news of Ys across the land. Alas, all I could do was tweet the game to death on Twitter.

Jeff from Giantbomb mentioned they wanted to do a Quick Look at some point for Oath, but then E3 happened. Maybe if they ever get their PC / capture setup together.

Finally played a bit of this game. About 3 hours in (12F), and I'm really enjoying this. Already like it more than OiF and it's creeping up to be my favorite Ys. Looking back I can't believe I only played three hours, so much already happened in the game.

The fight against that centipede (forgot the name) was great. It took me a few times, but I loved every minute of it. I finished it off perfectly with 1 HP left.

I'm not digging it as much as Felghana, so far. Not to say that I'm not enjoying it a ton, but the whole thing being set in a tower really does take away more luster than I thought it would.

I don't mind the the tower, it's actually a good thing, since it gets rid of the overworld that connects the dungeons. So far(!) I think Origin has better pacing, a more interesting story, better boss fights and I even like the music more.

I finally created a Steam account the other day and began my support of XSEED and their digital endeavors. I was planning on waiting until I got a better PC/Laptop to play Ys Origins and Felghana, but I said fuck it! I decided to download at least Origins for now since it's one of the few Ys games I have yet to play and HOLY SHIT am I glad I impulsed purchased this game instead of waiting. Ys Origins is INCREDIBLE!

I see some people say that they aren't enjoying this game as much as the other Ys games because it takes place entirely in a tower. I "get" that, but I'm loving it for what it is. There is so much cool world building and Ys I&II stuff going on in this game. It definitely feels like a fan service game to a degree, which is fine by me! The two bosses I've faced as Hugo were some of the best Ys bosses I've ever fought too. The structure is perfect as well. I love purifying save points and have the option to teleport around the tower. So good.

This may sound odd to some people, but my brother and I also have a fascination with games that either just go UP or DOWN, lol! Shadow Tower/Shadow Tower Abyss, Pandora's Tower, Baroque, etc. games that center around a dungeon/tower that either goes up or down and is stripped of filler areas, towns, fields, etc. these kinds of games really speak to us and now we can add Ys Origins to the list, hah!

I gotta say I'm really impressed with this game so far. It's so hard for me to choose my favorite Falcom/Ys game, but this is definitely getting up there from the little that I've played. It'll probably be a slow (but fun) burn though because I'm playing on Nightmare and I'm taking my time methodically filling out the bestiary entries as I move along. So glad I bought this! Thanks again XSEED! =)

EDIT: oh, and the Flooded Prison music is one of my new favorite tracks, EVER. I've listened to it at the gym for like 45 minutes straight on loop!

Yeah, to be honest, I didn't miss the "overworld" at all. It usually feels like filler and Ys games aren't really an exception.

WOW. So I finally reached Rado's Annex on Nightmare with Hugo. The Ys I references/tributes are THROUGH THE ROOF with this game! I'm so glad I got to experience the original Ys before touching this game because I don't think I would have appreciated half the shit I've seen and done otherwise. Ys I & Origin spoilers incoming!

First of all, am I right in thinking that this tower HAS to be Darm Tower or AT LEAST a re-imagining of the final Darm Tower dungeon from the first game? Seriously, as soon as I walked into the "Demonic Noise" path of the Guilty Fire section I immediately said, "No way...".

At this point in the game they really expect you to be thorough in your searches because it's not quite clear on how you are supposed to proceed. I INSTANTLY remembered this section from Ys I and I went back outside to the balcony section and I found a pillar, just like in the first game, that was supplying the "Demonic Noise" through its organ-like pipes. My mind was officially blown! I instantly pulled out the hammer I obtained from the Flooded Prison thinking it would clear the way, but it didn't. I eventually found the Roda Fruit I was missing and got my Official Ys I Hammer and silenced the evil room! So fucking cool! That was one of the coolest things about the final dungeon in the original game. I was ecstatic to see them bring it back.

Then I get to Rado's Annex and the whole scenario/imagery painted a very familiar picture. I COULD NOT BELIEVE THEY RECREATED THE FIRST BOSS FROM YS I! As soon as I saw the flame throwers I nearly applauded the game. Origin is one of the best fan service/prequel games I've ever played. Everything is just so well implemented, retold, referenced, etc. I can't praise it enough.

Also, tell me if I'm reading into the game too much, but am I right in thinking that Hugo Fact turns into Dark Fact, the final boss/antagonist from the original Ys? They seem to REALLY be pushing this, "You're evil just like us" angle. That would be so fucking cool if Hugo turns out to be Dark Fact.
