Ys Origin (PC/Steam) |OT|

Just wanting to check in and say that this is my first real Ys game and I'm having a great time with it so far. I've been playing the two characters concurrently and just alternating every thirty minutes or so, it's fun to directly compare the small differences that way.

I'll end up picking Oath too but Steam rules dictate I have to wait until the last day.

So... are people playing this KB/M or with a 360 pad, or what? I may have to pick up a controller because I find the mouse to be floaty and awkward. Or is that just me?

I use a 360 pad.

One of these days I'll get back to this game, but is the Yunica / 3rd mc playthrough 90% similar to Hugo's? Would be awfully bored if that was the case.

I assume the demon bosses are all the same.

Yes, the tower and demon bosses are the same, but the other bosses will be different. Since every character has different skills, the ways you reach different chests or get through various areas are different as well.

If Hugo is the only character you played as I can see why you might not care for the game. He's by far my least favorite character to play as (though I still found it fairly enjoyable).

Yunica's Adol-esque combat is fun and makes up for her meh version of the story, but the third character is where the game really shines. Has the most fun combat, and the best story of the three (and it's also the only one that's technically canon).

The third character's solution to the Devil's Corridor is pretty badass, too. It's one of my favorite moments in the game. ;)

Just beat the second boss with Yunica on Nightmare. I was cursing so hard when he spit 6 of those little bugs. Got him though.

One hour and twelve minutes later.

So I picked up this game as a complete impulse buy because I remember loving Ys 1 when I played it forever ago.... and this has been the best surprise of the entire Steam Sale thus far! I've been burning through the game and am currently just past having Yunica
knighted for saving the first goddess
. I wish I remembered more of Ys 1, as I'm sure there would be a ton of neat references. I need to go back and watch a quick "Lets Play" of it from somewhere.

And now that I've read through a few pages of the thread I see that there is another game just like this one? How does The Oath in Felghana compare to Origin? If it pops up on sale I'll probably grab it too. I'm having way to much fun with this game at the moment. It's like an old SNES comfort food ARPG.

Oath is a bit different than Origin, since Origin is kind of the odd game out (doesn't star Adol, takes place in one huge dungeon). But it's really good though, absolutely worth playing.

It's 66% off for the duration of the Steam Sale and probably won't go lower by itself, but tomorrow it will be part of the Indie Bundle (along with Audiosurf, Greed Corp, Gemini Rue, and Tiny Big Bang Story).

Link to the OT for Oath in Felghana

After finishing Binary Domain, I started this game last night. Using Yunica since I'm not a big magic user fan.

However I might have to replay this game a couple more times if the story and layout is different for each character. How long does it normally take to complete one character's quest?

Hope this game gets another deal. A friend wants to pick this up but missed the original Flash deal.

You'll want to play it as the unlockable character at the very least, but each character's story is really interesting, IMO.
As for playtime, it seems to vary by person but nobody seems to take more than 10 hours per character.

Also picked this up over weekend during the flash sale. Man, this game is so good and is really quite beautiful with everything maxed. I really hope that XSEED considers bringing TitS FC to steam as well as I know that it'll look just as good, if not better, as Origins.

I made it to Yunica's first boss before I had to stop gaming for the night. Refresh my memory, there are no healing items outside of random mob drops and goddess statue heals, right? Died twice on the first boss, wish I had and herb. Guess I just need to play better.

Yeah, no. Done.

Don't know what I have to spoiler or not spoiler, but...

Gelaldy
on Nightmare is impossible. Barely can get his arms off once, and I have to do it FIVE MORE TIMES? Not gonna happen. Fun ride while it lasted. Centipede was the easiest boss for me.

Edit: Rage has subsided. I'll just...have to grind. :(

Just started the game and I have a small question.

I'm playing as the guy character and I don't understand how to do the strong attack (lightning strike).

The tutorial said I need to attack just as I stop moving or something, but I was only able to do it once on accident. Is there a trick to doing it?

Your timing has to be very precise. I still can't do it willfully.

How is the difficulty in this game compared to Oath? I beat OiF on normal and am considering bumping up the difficulty for this one.

Just watched videos on youtube that made it look pretty simple.

Hey guys, two questions.

1. Does anyone have a cleria ore locations guide? And maybe one for armour.

2. How do I get to that chest on Guilty Fire that's above a green plate? I tried looking for a lantern to light but I can't find any. It's in the room preceeding the jumping room which branches off rightwards with a few green plates that you light to continue after the big event.

I can answer 2.

Go to the part of that room where you see a red symbol on a ledge. Equip the mask which reveals invisible stuff, and a bridge will appear leading to a switch.

ok, just why do I keep getting "steam cloud conflict" when I start this game? Like it's the second time that my saves get replaced with old ones.

btw
am I supposed to kill Toal? I mean can I do that or it's just impossibile.

Disabling cloud saves for the game would probably keep it from coming up and replacing the saves, but it doesn't really answer the question of why it's happening.

And
you can win the fight and you get different dialog. There's an achievement for that. Yunica's fight there as well, though she doesn't get different dialog.

So it's not a completely necessary thing to learn then? In the first combat room I had no problem just blasting the dudes away with my regular attack.

I hardly ever use it, since it's so fiddly to pull off. The way I do it is to tap in the direction, wait a split second and then press attack. It's hard to explain since I have to wait slightly longer than feels natural to me.

You don't need it at all. Except maybe in Nightmare, but I refuse to even try that mode.

I tried 2 times but I couldn't win so I moved on. didn't know about the achievement. :(

Picked this up during the sale and it was really good that I did.

This is my first Ys game (started on normal) so it probably took me a bit longer to get used to how fast and punishing it can be. The controls are responsive and combat is really satisfying once you recognize what you need to do. Soundtrack is awesome too, it's even already in a playable format in its Steam folder unlike most games that I have.

The two bosses I had the most trouble on first run was floor 21
Mantid reviving if he has minions really bummed me out since it was the first time I had issues dealing enough damage only to get laughed at him when I thought I was done. I eventually died and realized I missed a Cleria Ore. Bah!
. Also, at the end
Dalles and his third form took a few tries to figure out how he was killing me then a few more to consistently get out of the way.
Other than that, they were relatively smooth although I still managed to die a few times on most bosses due to over-aggressiveness.

It really reminds me of Crystalis in some places. Perhaps it's mostly just in the night and day difference a level or missing Cleria ore can do for bosses.

Will end up picking Felghana and probably try harder difficulties here as well which will undoubtedly rip me apart.

Guys I just picked up both Ys game. Quick question....how do you save in this game? I started playing it for the first time yesterday, had to quit the game to go somewhere but couldn't find any way to skip the first few intro cutscenes. So I waited a while but the cutscenes were incredibly long so I turned it off and when I restarted the game all my progress was lost :(

There are save point statues like most JRPGs. Yeah, it sucks when you are used to WRPG standards.

Fortunately, you can at least teleport to them if you need to quit, you still have to make your way back to where you were, but the areas aren't that big and you still have any levels and stuff you gained, so it's not quite as difficult the second time around.

And I guess I'm the odd one out for thinking the demon bosses in this game were all a bit too easy, except the one in the desert.

I seriously think that one is the hardest boss in the game, if not the whole series. At least, with that particular character.

Up there with Zava from Ys II for me, at the very least.

I missed the first boots then, wonder where I left them. I swore this game has like very little passages... so I'm baffled.
