I'm standing by my opinion that selling the characters is not the good way to approach f2p for fighting games. I'd take the valve road: make the entire game free, and only sell cosmetic stuff.
With a fighting game, players develop a STRONG connection with their character(s): that's where you want to monetise. Make them try out and play anyone they like, and then, when they start to feel this "bond", sell them costumes, accessories, titles, quotes, stage entry and winning animations, taunts and what nots.
I would buy the crap out of stupid things for the characters I play.

This- DOTA2 model would work fine for a fighting game.

I would buy several things for UMvC3 characters. The problem is that the accessory FTP model only works if you continually support the game and have a huge following. I just don't see a fighting game ever having DotA longevity. Or at least not in the near future. Hell, Capcom can't even get the netcode right. And Capcom is one of maybe 3 companies with the potential fanbase to make this work.

What are the other 2 companies?

Fighting games already have that sort of longevity, longer than any modern MOBA has proved. The userbase just isn't there (which shouldn't be an issue because they're still significant).

Capcom isn't even interested in F2P, SMH. This is how bad they are at reading the market.

Isn't Deep Down F2P?

Don't you have to unlock the characters anyway? I can't imagine tournament organizers would be happy about that.

The big hurdle to Capcom achieving DOTA/TF2-like success is that those games are PC games and they have their community making tons of cosmetic content. This would be great for a Street Fighter game if Street Fighter was primarily played on PC.

Of course, Capcom could work around this but I don't see that happening. Too many hurdles.

Speaking of Injustice, I played it for the first time today. We got a PS4 in our break room at work, and Injustice/NBA2k14 were the games that got picked. It's pretty fun, but I was just cheesing with Deathstroke in my first game. Then I ended the undefeated streak of my coworker who actually plays the game seriously. Beat him with Scorpion, lol.

I don't know if I wanna drop money on Injustice yet, but I really loved playing it.

Why are we doing Smash puns this week of all weeks?

yeah I know, Direct, but it's not really relevant to this thread

save that for if Melee passes Marvel in Evo 2014 entrants

Yeah I think a F2P a la Dota 2 would be great for fighting games. Basically that was what I was trying to say. I don't really want on-disc DLC, but character parts would be nice, assuming they don't fuck with the animation/models too much. LoL and Dota 2 to an extent have some issues with character DLC that makes the characters look nothing like the original model at first glance. While it's not a big deal in a 50 minute game, in a fighting game that would throw a lot of people off, especially when combined with the stage colors.

I think having a 3 on 3 team mode or 5 on 5 like that one Chinese KoF would be nice. 1v1 games always feel anti-social when you're playing them for a long time. It's fun grinding out sessions or w/e online, but personally I just feel lonely after awhile.

I'd love to be in a lobby with 2-4 other players on my team shooting the shit and watching someone on my team play in a bo3. You could even make it so your team could give them tips while they're playing or between rounds. I love having voice chat on and talking trash while I play or sending salty messages when I'm done. If I was a fighting game company, my #1 goal would be to figure out how to bring that arcade/local player experience online. Especially if I was making a F2P game.

Is this the glitch that RayRay and Moonz were talking about that one time a while back at HoC?

It was something different that happen a while back, RayRay was just talking about it and someone posted a video of the glitch and shows how it happen to him, this must be a different way to trigger the glitch

I don't know if I mentioned this before but I despise league players. Balancing a competitive game around spectators? LOL? Also this little gem

Honestly, fighting games are the worst possible case scenario to compare the balancing of anything else to. You're basically comparing tribal witch doctors to John Hopkin's.
What does that even fucking mean when League has the same 15 characters pick or banned and SF4 has the most consistent diverse top 8/16
