NPD Sales Results for March 2014 [Up4: FFX/X-2 HD]

Don't count Vita out , its a lot to ask for someone to buy a $200 Vita while they are also planning to buy a new $400 PS4 and games for it.

I think it makes sense to see a lull in vita sales while there is an uptick from the pent up PS4 demand. I expect to see a rise in vita sales by the end of the year as many of those 7+ million decide to explore remote play. I think we are reading too much into it at this point.

Also, don't count out the Wii-U, it may be selling like crap now but with all the pent up demand for the PS4 and Xbox 1, we should see demand pick up for it later in the year as people explore Mario Kart 8.

Based on the numbers Sony released earlier this year a significant amount of PS4 owners already owned a Vita. I guess it's possible by now those numbers have skewed downwards but I still wouldn't count on remote play changing things much.

You also have the free vita games they are building up with their PS+ account . I picked my Vita up in November with my PS4, never bought a game for it but I now have 14 games .

At some point it will be worth while to pick it up if only for the free game library that people will build up ( if they are building them up)

This month, Nintendo (the publisher) derived 29% of its software revenues from Wii U.

Software revenue (dollars) is down by -16.5% from last year.

3DS is down from 230K last year to 159K.

Wii U is barely up from 68K last year to 70K.

Wii is down from 91K last year to 28K.

DS is down from 86K last year to dead.

Now you see why they didn't do a PR statement. It's hard to spin those results. :-(

That's rough. It'll be interesting to see how MK8 goes because I assume it'll sell well on the software side but is it enough to move systems. Also, can Smash Bros coming out on the 3DS this summer spur sales?

Anything is possible but it seems like the best bet Sony has now to revive the Vita in the US would be to wait until they drop the base price of the PS4 to $299 and then bundle in the Vita at $399.

There's not a lot of reasons for them to do that now though with the PS4 selling so well at $399 on its own

It is truly sad to see the Vita dying as it is a great service. Perhaps there's just no room for a high quality handheld gaming device. People want snappy and boring apps these days.

Plinko

Wildcard berths that can't beat teams without a winning record should have homefield advantage
With the small userbase, I fully expect a ridiculously high attach rate for Mario Kart.

If people were interested enough in the Vita to sign on to Sony's website and redeem the PS+ games for the system, you would think that it would be selling better. I mean, we've probably seen 30 or 40 free Vita games by now.

Don't worry, I'll vouch for them.
i'm a little disappointed he hasn't made a new conspiracy about March NPD. At least not that I can see. :(

Because he is still rocking in a corner crying.

None yet, but that's not the point I was getting at.

There's a couple ways to grow mindshare of your platform, and one of the ways is having exclusive 3rd party titles. I just think it's a worthwhile move for Sony to consider again, now that it looks like it can be affordable.

Ah I see where your coming from. That is definitely something MS has used to great effect.

Water is not wet!
Its amazing the amount of marketing that went into Titanfall and the effects just didnt match expections. When i went to see Winter Soldier there was a 5 minute commercial of Titanfall as part of the Regal Cinema intro show before the movie started. This was in addition to other Xbox ads before the movie started.

They can still say the love us. I know they do :(

..

Or announce Majora's Mask 3DS dammit to revitalize the 3DS!

To be honest, i was kinda expecting a mayor meltdown on twitter, but he hasn't posted since yesterday morning.

Why do one when his "followers" are already doing it for him? XD
I'm just gonna leave it here: they agreed with Dent about the NPD numbers being "off"

RE: Nintendo:

Mario Kart is catnip for casuals. Smash Bros. is crack for (a lot of) hardcore gamers. These are two of the few aces Nintendo has left (maybe even the only two, right now) but I can actually see them change things around for Nintendo if they push them correctly (cheap bundles, etc.).

What do you think the chances are for Nintendo of getting in second place this gen?

Microsoft is going to be silent on hardware. They always have been. Shouldn't expect any different this time around.

Gamers are looking at games. And the games tell the story.

First party - MS has the edge. Forza, Ryse, Titanall, Killer Instinct, Dead Rising, they are hands down the best first party games that have come out for next gen thus far.

Knack. laughable. Killzone. Even the SDF hated it. Infamous. It was decent. Short though. Nothing really awe inspiring. Eyecandy for powers. The city was pretty. But in all honesty, it was an upgraded PS3 game. There was no 'Wow' moment like when you see the THOUSANDS of zombies for the first time in Dead Rising. Or when your family walks into the room and asks what movie your watching when your playing Ryse or Forza. Or when you punch a hole in a Mech and pull out the pilot for the first time in Titanfall, and then crush him in your hand.

Multiplat - sure, PS4 has shown us the old way of programming is easier on their machine. They have an edge on the old shooters, old Assassins, and even Tomb raider and motocross games that were specifically designed for the old game engines and old gen consoles.

Is it upsetting? Sure. PS4 has shown us games over and over in higher res and frames on their system than ours. That SHOULD be upsetting. Anyone looking at any product wants to compare and prove they have the best one. That's human nature.

YES, we compare sales numbers. We always have, because we want to see what the market mindshare is like.

It shouldn't be a surprise by now, the current market is not on the X1 favor. Look at ALL of the games news media sites. They troll X1 rumors, and praise Sony at every turn. They ban pro X1 members, and allow SDF to post what they want pretty much. Look at the sales numbers, consumers believe they are buying a superior product for a lesser price. Honestly, all things considered the two consoles are neck and neck, X1 being at a higher pricepoint and less markets makes a huge difference. It's amazing they have done as well as they have honestly.

But does the market see it that way? Of course not. PS4 is in the lead in sales. Their games consistently are higher res and higher frame rate. And they are still a lower price point. (Even thought the Titanfall bundle pretty much evens it out)

What does this say to the average consumer? PS4 is better.

...

But that's not the whole story is it?...

Which console offers a better value? Which console offers a better experience? Which console offers better and more innovative games? Which console is backed by pockets deep enough to make next gen actually happen?

I won't answer these, because the answer is obvious.

We are in an in between stage right now. Next gen is 'Still Coming' imo. Developers are just barely touching the surface of what these consoles can do. We are still getting what we want, games, but they are still in the 360/ps3 port stage. Most of the next gen multiplats especially, are just reskinned last gen games thus far.

A storm is on the horizon. It's bringing something huge with it. It's confirmed, and it IS the secret sauce.

It's called DX12, and mark my words, when that hits is when Next gen will truly be here. And Holliday 2015, they will just be scratching the surface.

In the next expanse of time and space in the gaming timeline, X1 is going to be showing us exactly what next gen looks like. And it will be glorious. 1080p will be a topic to laugh about. Believe me.

Against the odds, we are in fact the underdogs here.

Everyone likes a good underdog story.

I'm hoping this post becomes a new meme here on GAF, I took it from THAT blog

Until I saw the spoiler tag you had me worried.

Yep that's what I was getting at. From a business or sales perspective, outright buying exclusives could have better opportunity cost now for Sony. Of course all of us on here want to see new first party IP all the time given the choice but that's not without its own risks as we've seen.

They are like ants scouring the internet for good news or digging up some old slide from a pdf as soon something has been debunked or bad MS results too rebuild their hopes.

This conversation happened a while back (page 55ish using superior page tracker), and it got my interest. Know that this is not inflammatory in any way as I know KH3 is not coming to the Wii U in any shape or form. But as a question:

Out of sales curiosity: would KH3 sell more on the XB1 or the Wii U WW?

Microsoft would have the numbers, and the Wii U might have the audience. People were talking about the KH3 port so this question popped into my head.

My personal answer:
If KH3 came out in 2014, I would say Wii U.
But when it comes out around 2016-17ish, XB1's sheer HW numbers will negate any Wii U advantage and it will sell a lot more.

Thoughts....?

If the PS4 doesn't count......
then about 33%

Looking at the comments sections, some of those dudes are starting to sober up. They still have not caught up to reality, but I think continued sales trend coupled with superior PS4 multiplatform versions will finally break them by the end of the year.

Too bad. I really want the Wii U to be relevant. I love that thing and its GamePad so much, even if I haven't really touched the thing in a few months.

Its pretty interesting how, despite performing worse, nobody is talking about the Wii U, either positively like that french guy, marc^_^ used to do, how the turnaround was "just around the corner!", nor negatively like all the doom discussion. The console is barely mentioned, no "What Nintendo should do" threads, which were very common a few months ago.

Its like finally everyone has accepted (even monsieur marc) that it is a failure of a system with no hope in hell in even being relevant. And there is no need to beat on the system, its like we all secretly had a handshake, that there is nothing more to talk about in regards to this system from a sales perspective, let people enjoy the games but that is it.

Obviously PS4 and Xbox One are now the center stage of all sales discussion, but like the Wii U, perhaps in a year or 2, things will settle, and both products will find their trajectory, and most importantly: a acceptance of where both of them are.

I'll will ban myself if Nintendo ends up in second place.

It's impossible.

I don't see KH3 coming at all this year. At best, it comes holiday 2015.

Wii U Lego outsold the XB1 and PS4 version.
Turnaround imminent.

Yeah, I know. That's why I used "came" instead of "comes", because the chance is past. But people when talking use it both ways also....
But yeah, I know it's not coming in 2014. I'm barely convinced it'll be out in 2016.

I was just giving the only situation ever in which I thought the Wii U version would outsell it.

I'm just hoping these results lead to price cuts at E3 for the Xbone and Wii U. That way I'm hoping Sony responds with their own price cut.

If something like Titanfall - which seemed like it would win over pretty much all of the CoD crowd - can fail to make the garguantuan impact everyone thought it would, it wouldn't surprise me if Kart and Smash can somehow manage to sell a shitload.

Don't get me wrong, I have no faith whatsoever that the Wii U will ever become a truly successful console, but nothing surprises me anymore. A significant boost in Wii U sales would make me happy, if only for the diversity in our gaming landscape.

Serious question:
Remember how Nintendo released the wii U while PS3 and Xbox 360 were still going?
Could It be possible that Nintendo will do the same this gen?
Sooner than expected of course*

Nintendo has no reason to extend this generation like they tried to do with Wii. They should most certainly be the first ones to release a successor console, I think. Probably in 2017 to go back to a 5-year cycle for them.

It is fairly interesting. I suspect 360 will pass Wii's LTD at some point

Any idea what PS2's is/was in the US? And what's Wii LTD for comparison?

PS2: 45.8 million when tracking data dried up. It definitely made it to 46m. Beyond that, I couldn't say. Maybe someone else has a better number.

Wii is at 41.7 million.

Thanks so probably safe to assume 46M at least for PS2. Not sure 360 has another 4 million left in its tank in the US
