Agree on Baby and Slumdog

Yeah Slumdog is pretty awful.

Slumdog should have filled every spot.

I understand it's a feel good movie, but never really understood why it's also a boring one, with a cringeworthy conclusion.

People who complain about 2001: you have to see it in a theatre in order to fully get it.

It wasn't designed to be watched on your TV screen. Overall, I have to disagree too - it's one of the most artistic films ever made, and easily the best science fiction film. I'm not sure the pacing is a valid criticism. Things move slowly in space - it's part of the point of the film.

Now as far as Shawshank Redemption..... I've never seen why people act like it changed their lives. It was so predictable and cliche ridden. It's just another doe-eyed white guy who is better than everyone else and didn't do it, and his black sidekick with magical properties who did in an almost completely neutered prison environment.

It's one of the most technically impressive movies of all time, which makes it extremely important. In every other way though it's a mediocre Kubrick film.

Aye, and that's why it deserves to be on a "Most over-rated..." list. It's tough to put mediocre action flicks on a list like this, like Skyfall, because nobody actually thinks they are memorably great movies. In 10 years, nobody is going to ever talk about Skyfall, so it's tough to say it's over-rated.

I think we could drop any early Adam Sandler comedy onto this list too, because there's a good number of people who are like 26 - 40 who think that early Adam Sandler movies are legitimately some of the funniest movies ever, and they are just complete shit. PEople say things like "Adam Sandler's movies are bad now, but Billy Madison is one of the funniest movies ever..." And, Billy Madison is so bad it hurts.

No, it's just one of the dullest movies of all time with such slow pacing that it would make snail's pace seem like fucking speed of light, deep or not. I mean, did we really have to watch 20-25 minutes of apes jumping around & raging and then something like 10 minutes to see the space shuttle dock to the space station? That's good film-making, really? And it's not like the acting or writing/dialogue is all that good either. The only thing it succeeds in is some pretty imagery and the technical side of it, what's with being such an old movie, but yeah, that's negated by the horribly slow pace, it sucks the life out of all the scenes in the movie (well, except the ending, but that goes to another extreme). 2001: A Space Odyssey is without a doubt the most overrated movie of all time. Movies like Inception & the like have nothing on Space Odyssey as far as being overrated goes.

I completely agree with this. I wanted to like 2001 when I saw it... I wanted to be a film geek and think that I got it. And after watching it, talking with my friends, I was trying to gush about how artistic and brilliant it was... And then... when I got back to my freshman dorm room, I just sat up and was like "Man, that was really fucking dull." If the movie wasn't so critically and popularly acclaimed, I would be indifferent to it, probably like it more, but because of the acclaim and praise throughout the ages, it makes me like it less.

He almost takes 'Show Don't Tell' too far and shows us too much of what he's trying to tell us. About halfway through the opening act you understand what the filmmaker is trying to say, yet he's going to linger here for the next 20 minutes anyway for no discernible reason. The same could be said for every other long and lingering shot or plot element.

I'm going to echo a poster from earlier and say that I'm not sure Kubrick is your kind of director, then. Other than Dr. Strangelove, this describes every single one of his films.

GSG Flash

Nobody ruins my family vacation but me...and maybe the boy!
Definitely agree with Skyfall. At the time of its release, it was hailed as the best thing since sliced bread, but it turned out to be absolute shit.

Agree with Slumdog too. Unlike Skyfall, it wasn't bad, but it was just ok.

Maybe bond is only popular in the Torygraph circles, but it's not really popular with anybody I know... I can't say Skyfall is overrated, because it barely ever comes up in a conversation.

In Neogaf circles, every film produced by Marvel is overrated.

Full Metal Jacket shits itself when the Training Camp scenes end.

A Clockwork Orange is a shit film. Cannibalizes the book to no end, unfunny and boring.

Personally, I think ACO is Kubrick's worst film. What's ironic is that it has the cult status and kids like it because of the "ultra violence" and rock star cool of Alex, but it's supposed to be a condemnation of those things. I read that Kubrick himself also thought it was his worst film.

FMJ was my first introduction to Kubrick so I have a sentimentality attached to it, and while I think it's a good film (if not great) it's hard to say it comes close to comparing to 2001 from an artistic point of view. IMO, 2001 was the first and last truly artistic science fiction film made. Somehow it was able to be made with utter disregard for least common denominator viewers.

The Living Daylights is my favorite Bond. I'll give 'em points for recommending.

Hey mine too!

This list sucks...just off the top of my head it could have included Titanic, Shakespeare in Love, Chicago, Scarface and The Hurt Locker and been way better.

Overrated is such lazy term unless you try really hard to present a strong argument of why is it overrated. Though it shames that overrated as a term now seems synonymous with "popular things that I don't like but I don't understand why".

Yeah fuck overrated term.

Clockwork Orange is definitively his worst film. All the problems I have with 2001 are mirrored in ACO but with the added detriment of the awful script and some really badly framed scenes.

I would agree that 2001 is a 'truly artistic' sci-fi film but I would not want other filmmakers to try and make another one. The wonder of science and space is limited by Kubrick's vision. When I think of art and science and fiction being mixed together perfectly, I think of Cosmos (the original). Kubrick's version of space and the future is one of stark boredom and advancements catalyzed by strange and god-like forces, whereas Sagan's version of space and the future are optimistic and very much anthropomorphic.

Maybe it's a tonal difference that I can't agree with.

I don't really understand, has Skyfall been received with that much praise?

I agree with the few films I watched from that list. In suggestions for The Departed I would have put the original HK movie (Infernal Affairs). People need to know about it.

It’s a criminal failing of the movie that it purports to be about people’s dreams being invaded, but demonstrates no instinct at all for what a dream has ever felt like, and no flair for making us feel like we’re in one, at any point
Erm, isn't that the whole point of the film, the line between the real world and dreams get so blurred we are not sure what world the character is in? Pretty sure the zero gravity gave us a pretty idea that we were in a dream.

Whole list is terrible, what an awful article. Seem to entirely miss the point on most and have zero sense of fun on others.

I have one big problem with Skyfall:

Why did they put a bad guy, who's famous for being able to hack anything, in a network controlled cell as soon as they caught him? Why no old fashioned cell made out of steel with a key?

He would have never got out and the movie would have been an hour shorter.
It was just super lazy writing.

SMH @ 2001 mentions.

You have won, Mr. Bay. You have won.

Oh please, people can shit on your fav movie while at the same time recognizing that Michael Bay's films are significantly worse.

Except for The Rock, that movie's better than 2001 for sure.

network is a pretty good call, actually. it's nowhere near as incisive as i remembered on rewatch, just kinda goofy.

ikiru though. noooooo. i don't think the subtlety really matters, the film has a big heart and it pulls it off masterfully.

I also wanted to say how much I hated Slumdog Millionaire's ending. The entire theme of his relationship with his friends was completely invalidated by the fact that
he won the fucking money by accident.
Yes, I get that it was destiny, but it shouldn't have been. All he wanted was to reunite with her. I think it would have been way better served
had he lost the money but won his friend back.

Wouldn't go that far as to call Skyfall the most overrated film of all time.

It's an okay film with beautiful cinematography.

Inception is overrated? I don't think I've seen people act like it's a masterpiece that often.

And lol at The Departed making the list, get the fuck outta here.

Agree about Skyfall. The 'plot' makes absolutely no sense at all in any way shape or form. It's just very well shot & Javier Bardem makes for a good villain.

Probably agree on the departed as well. It's been a while since I saw it, but being less than impressed when I did see it at the Cinema and didn't really feel it improved upon Infernal affairs bar the setting.

It's almost as if the people who made this list don't understand the meaning of the word "overrated." In order for something to be overrated, people have to clamor over it, and give it more attention than it deserves. In what world is The Departed "overrated?" I literally know nobody that has ever even seen the movie. This thread is the closest I have gotten to having a discussion about the movie. I don't...why?

And here I was going to try to embarrass you, now I have to thank you for saving me from having to type a long post on my phone.

You're not addressing the point though. People not enjoying Kubrick's filmmaking style in 2001 does not automatically mean that they enjoy Michael Bay. Can you expand a bit on why you think that?

Not a bad list at all. Inception should be first, but Skyfall is an excellent contender. Goddamn those movies are overhyped here.
