Media Create Sales: Week 24, 2014 (Jun 09 - Jun 15)

Currygan

at last, for christ's sake
nope it's crawling like a one legged turtle for me as well

anyway, unexciting numbers all around. WiiU is holding well onto its dreadful numbers, but the PS4 beats it in terms of awfulness. MK8 doing good, Youkai Watch is a phenomenon, and the 3DS is lagging, these Smash/Pokemon/MonHun need to come out now

The PS4 will probably continue to do horribly until next year at the minimum. I mean, holiday sales will be higher, but the system has no Eastern games outside of Omega Quintet with solid release dates.

Damn, it really seems that way. Seems like 2014 in Japan will be very difficult for the PS4 - I can see MGSV, KH3 and FFXV pushing hardware sales, but who knows when they will exactly come out (can't imagine KH3 coming out before 2016).

Anyone knows where can I find Arcadia Magazine Top 10 of highest-grossing arcade games in Japan? I used to find it at the front page of their website. I have to actually buy their mag now? xDu

PS4 FIFA better fall off the charts next week... the digital version is under 1400 yen with Plus.

1400 yen is more expensive than free.

The PS4 + FIFA14 bundle is the same price of a regular PS4. That's why it's charting.

Edit: beaten. I blame GAF being terribly slow.

The Wii U could still become a hit in Japan, that's awesome.

I'm not sure what game could cause a craze though. Still need that perfect game...

Happy MK8 is still on top.

Could be, but there's not one game that could do that. It's possible that with its higher user base that Japanese developers might be more willing to make games for the platform. However I don't really see that happening. I'm sure the developers will just stick to the playstation platform and expect the fans will as well.

Will Wii U YTD sales ever pass last year's at this rate?
Certainly. SSB4 should give the system another boost, and I think with MK8 and SSB on the shelves during the holidays, the Wii U is going to relatively sell very well toward the end of the year. Not to mention Hyrule Warriors and Bayonetta2 could entice a subsection of gamers that haven't necessarily yet purchased a Wii U, which could give the system another minor bump.

3DS version will certainly devalue WiiU Smash Bros., in Japan anyway. And Hyrule Warriors certainly won't sell more systems than the (already miniscule) bump from MK8.

It won't take off that is my point, why would it? If the WiiU becomes the reference for performance in Japan, its over.

LOL at the bitter tears in the comments in this thread.

It's true home consoles are not performing well in Japan, but saying WiiU outselling PS4 will "doom" Japan... please stop...

I'm sure there will be some kind of promotion for buying both versions of Smash. that could help a bit.

Pretty bad numbers all around.

Hopefully we're seeing a new baseline for Wii U but I feel it might keep slipping lower :\

PS4 given a little break due to world cup and Fifa bundling/advertising I take it?

Still not doing well but has yet to go sub-5k I guess?

I wonder how much 3DS hardware Yo-kai Watch is managing to sell

If all DLC came tied to $13 figurines, I'd consider all DLC to be free
Wonder if Nintendo could have Animal Crossing WiiU as their big spring 2015 title ready, essentially taking the spot MK8 has for 2014. A real home console AC with NFC figures could sell some consoles. I wonder how big the team is though, since a part of the team is working on Splatoon as well iirc.

If the top console in Japan only sells 12k a week that is very bad. Very very bad. It doesn't matter if it is the Wii U or the PS4 specifically. That is what he is trying to say.

Well it's not like WiiU dooms Japan it's just that if PS4 sells less than WiiU it means that the highest selling home console will sell less than 4 million in Japan during generation. If that happens console market is pretty damn doomed in Japan. I still personally believe that PS4 will easily sail past 5 million like PS3 but that's just me.

Not a good week but I'm glad that Persona Q and Yokai is selling well :) I guess that the 3DS will get a sequel to Persona Q? Is it going to outsell Persona 4 Golden?

If the PS4 follows the same pattern the PS3 followed it won't reach 5 million at all in Japan. The PS3 sold approximately 45% of what the PS2 sold. If another 55% decline happens this gen for the PS brand in Japan the PS4 will sell approximately 4.5 million in Japan which is possible still.Lower may be possible. If sony is smart they will find ways to increase the PS4 baseline in Japan. I really hope they are not relying on the big japanese third party games to help the PS4 sell better.I really hope they have a couple of big Japanese exclusives in development right now.

He means how the Ps3 sold poorly in the first year and picked up in the latter years.

The big franchises that might make their way to the platform:

FFXV
KH3
MGSV
RE
GTA
Tales
Yakuza
GT
Bloodborne
Dragons Dogma 2 (I wish)

Exclusivity doesn't really matter since Xbox is non existent in Japan so pretty much every next gen multiplat is treated as an exclusive.

I mostly meant the slow start of PS3 and that despite that it managed to crawl to ten million with some serious legs. After two years in the market PS3 had ltd of about 2.5 million...It sold sub one million units in 2008. People often forget just how slow start it had in Japan. I don't think PS4 will do quite same but should easily fly past 5 million.

The three biggest games in that list won't release in Japan until late 2015 and maybe even 2016. Sony and/or third party devs must have at least one big exclusive that can start selling ps4's this year or early next year. Fifa has seemed to slow down the ps4's descent for now.I don't think the ps4 will make a PS3 style recovery in Japan. It may make a smaller recovery than that once more titles release for it.

I maintain that I have trouble imagining them not making more PersonaQ unless the fan reaction is toxic upon surveying.

Is this the first Atlus game released since Sega bought them btw? That might explain some of the overperform given Sega's channel power relative to Index.

I really don't think they will spam PQs, I do wonder if this will change EO in any way, maybe the games will have bigger budget and more advertising?

I put the chances of that happening at about 50%-60%, but there is a chance the that the PS brand may face a 45%+ decline this gen, but this depends on what sony does to help the ps4 in Japan.

Another good week for Wii U, keep sales higher than the PS3/4,even if the difference is not that high is something good.
Mario Kart 8 also did great, I hope that it keep selling like this for a while. And Yo-Kai watch still in God mode, even I purchase this game last week.
One Piece for Wii U, sold more than I thought, which is a good thing.

He's a pretty swell guy in my books anyway.

I doubt it'll be much bigger budget unless it moves toward becoming a story oriented series that would be easier to do cross-media for. Though since Shigeo Komori seems to want that to happen and did Untold instead of EOV to begin with, maybe that is what will happen.

i agree with you to an extent, but i still think it'll be enough to comfortably push the system's 2014 YTD over last year's, which isn't exactly a major hurdle.

This year....no chance. Japanese third parties are once again late for next gen, though its only for there big franchises.

2014, the best you can hope for is FF Type 0 HD coming even then thats SE.

Honestly, I'm not too sure how much better PS4's sales will get once the big games arrive. Safe to say that if those games have come out and PS4 is still doing WiiU numbers.....welp.

Abysmal numbers. The base levels of everything are so low that putting them in order of sales is like trying to compare plankton and guessing which one is biggest.

As usual Japanese gaming sales kind of suck...

Props to Youkai Watch, Mario Kart 8, and Persona Q. That's pretty much about it.

I hope the Media Create numbers for Wii U are indicating there's a hold for Wii U, but thanks to Famitsu, I have a feeling that's wishful thinking. Oh well.

I doubht Persona Q will have any significant effect on EO. Reason why PQ is selling so well is mainly because they're presenting it as a Persona game.

As for the next EO, they're definitely gonna have a bigger focus on story, characters, etc... But that's it. They'll still keep a classic mode for the harcore fans Atlus knows it can rely on.

I'm not sure if it's really possible to have a -bigger- focus on story and characters compared to EO Untold. Lol. They already went down that road hard!

I'm fine with EO becoming more story oriented, but I still hope they manage to keep the character creation and customization as a core part of the series.

As a EO fan, I gotta say that the EO series was already having pretty interesting stories, III has a great story that most fans really enjoyed, but it wasn't character focused.

Untold was kinda crappy when it came to that, let's see how they do it next time.

If the Wii U does well in Japan but not in the west while the PS4 does the opposite that could lead to an interesting situation. Multiplatting with both Wii U and PS4 is pretty difficult, relatively speaking, so most devs may have to choose PS4/XB1 or Wii U. This would lead to larger Japanese developers essentially having to choose whether to target the west or Japan. I would think big publishers would move towards completely westernizing their franchises, but the smaller franchises may end up on Wii U.

Dragon Quest XI exclusive would do it.

At this rate, how long until PS4 reaches X360 LTD?

Is there a graph showing sales of the two aligned to launch date?

Without doing too much digging it seems it took 360 till March 2008 to reach where PS4 now and was selling around 2k a week throughout the summer. So even with PS4 bad sales its equaling about a month of 360 sales per week.

If any devs want to make unsubsidised Japan specific console games I think they'll probably stick to the PS3 for now.

I'm curious with this statement. How many years does the PS4 need to reach 5 million and consider it as "easily fly past 5 million"?
