it doesn't look like it's gonna be a very good game, though. apparently the beta was really disappointing.

he is a good artist, though. i just wish there was more variation in the body types.

I haven't tried it yet, but I've only heard mostly positive things about it so far. The only problem I've noticed besides the reported bugs is that the script needs polish. And I know from the pre-order forums that they are taking the beta feedback to heart, and are going to try to incorporate a lot of improvements.

As for the designs, I really like them all so I have no complaints. Most dating sims feature enough lithe pretty boys to last a lifetime, so I'm more than happy to see the influx of beef lately. (SHC, Coming Out On Top & No, Thank You!!!) I'm more concerned that they have unique personalities and storylines.

Yeah, I don't have any major issues with them, they all just seem to bee proportioned the same. If that makes sense? idk but yeah i hope that too

I know what you mean, but I've waited so long for characters with this aesthetic, so I'm pretty pleased with them. And I've always been a HUGE fan of Dongsaeng's artwork, and these characters are his trademark style, through and through.

Are you planning on trying the game? It would be nice to have some Gaffers to discuss it with. (The SFW parts, of course.) I'm not expecting it to have the same narrative depth as Coming Out On Top or No, Thank You!!!, as it seems to be a much more straightforward beefcake game, but as long as the characters are likable and the art is good, (which it obviously is), I'm sure I'll be happy with the results, especially since the devs seem dedicated to making the necessary improvements. A good story would be a bonus in my eyes.

Sunrider patch 4.2a is out since yesterday.
If you haven't tried the game it's the time to do so.
The big #gamechanger in patch 4.2 is the "helper" that actually explain properly what everything does and it helps the battles by a long shot.

Also the difficulty in some battles has been tweaked.
Loving it so far after the patch.

Know what, this game didn't deserve the long winded explanation.

G-senjou no Maou will be the first, and possibly only, VN that I refuse to finish.

Music was good though.

Huh? What happened? Maybe there's an explanation....?

In other things, though, I've been making my way through Comyu. It's pretty good so far, but I'm really disliking both Izawa in his worst moments and Kagome. They're stupidly insufferable.

Although they both are comedy gold in some of their interactions. Hopefully I'll have that VN done in a few more days

He hate the protagonist, for me that's kinda the appeal though..

Oh. Hahaha.

Another question for Byronic, then: you've only played the main story and not the subroutes? Maybe that could help you to stomach the protagonist until the end, since it shows you a different side of him, and one which you won't see until the end of the story proper.

As usual, love redeems lol

I only went down the Haru route, because I figured (even before looking it up) that it would be the True end route. I honestly hated the main character so much, that I didn't want to see him get any of the other girls.

Tsubaki and Kanon are the only two that I had the chance to go for, but purposely didn't. Kyousuke started out as a similar MC as the School Days guy, but as the story went on, I got used to his brand of assholery. So me hating the main character was only a small part of the problem. The larger problem lies with the its:

Characters:

  • You have the well-endowed sister character, who isn't really your sister but acts all clingy/puppy-like as a little sister might.
  • Well-endowed quirky childhood friend who puts on an act to distract you from the fact that she loves you.
  • A well-endowed "nice girl" who is a bit naive and too trusting, but at the same time is very reliable and caring.
  • A tsundere poorly-endowed white-haired girl who puts on a tough-girl persona to push you away when she really wants you to like/love her.
  • A smart and cunning girl who uses her powers of persuasion to get what she wants, she still cares about others though.
  • Main character with a quirk that makes him have to do things whether he wants to or not.
Not really, as he's not Maou, but my point stands.

Oh, my fault. That's the cast of the anime NouCome. I got confused because they're THE EXACT F*CKING SAME.

Story

When I started this game, I was expecting a Battler vs Beatrice type of battle of wits. By the end of the first chapter, I was thinking "Oh, so it's one of those types of stories huh? Awesome." Sadly, by the beginning of the 5th chapter I was thinking, "Oh, so it's going to be one of those stories huh? Shit."

MC meets a girl in his youth, then doesn't see her for a few years. They are reunited and one of them doesn't recognize the other. bad things happen, yadayadayada, they get together in fairy tale-like fashion at the end.
This is basically the plot for both Umineko and this game. While both are painfully cliched, at least Umineko had some cool moments in between the stupidity. This game didn't.

There were so many uninteresting parts in this game, and so much of the dialogue seemed necessary. There are parts where conversations will just shift to something completely off-topic and will continue for way too long.

The Maou reveal is terrible as well. By that time, I had already figured it out. I mean, they made it painfully obvious in the hour leading up to it. "My brother's body was blown up so hard that there wasn't even a body to bury
." It's like I saw red flares go off, whistles started sounding, red flags started being tossed in the air. Terrible.

I stopped at the beginning of the 5th chapter after.... heck, I can't even remember, at that point I just started skipping text and stopped where I thought things were going to get interesting. They never did, so I promptly deleted the game from my hard drive and proceeded to spoil the ending by reading it on Wikipedia. Apparently it gets a bit better towards the end, but the problem is that I didn't care about ANY of the characters. Not a single one. I liked Haru until I realized that she wasn't like Battler at all, she never won, she never outright bested Maou. And by the end she was nothing more than another worthless character.

I'm done with the game, I couldn't stomach another minute of it so I couldn't see myself enjoying the redemption of Kyousuke or any of the other characters for that matter.

G-senjou wasn't that bad.

but i guess it's impossible enjoy a vn if not one of the characters managed to grab you.
My only problem with the game is that it was hard to enjoy the thing going one thanks to the numerous changes in POV in each route.

It's ok to do that once in a while , but g-senjou did it way too many times.

It was more entertaining that sharin no kuni at least

Not that this means anything, since the same tropes are in like every harem anime ever, but NouCome came 4 years after G-Senjou

I'll be honest though, I think your intense hate for it is more because you tried to force it instead of letting go when you should have, and not really because it's THAT bad. Even with the translation barrier, I think there's enough VNs out there that you can be as picky as you are with any other form of media (or even more, because they're so long).

Shame you didn't liked it, but I agree that there are some characters that are hard or impossible to like.

Personally I like to see how a character can redeem him/herself but that's just me. Anyway, I just hope that this experience hasn't soured you on the medium. Planning on picking up anything else?

It actually gets worse by the end. You didn't miss out on anything.

I saw. From Wikipedia I learned that
Maou fakes a suicide and returns to kill(?) Haru and she almost kills him when Kyousuke intervenes and does it for her for "reasons". Then goes to jail and gets out and he and his new family live happily ever after.
Screw this game.

Maybe. I guess I should have just stopped when I decided I didn't like the Main character. It's the same reason I never finished Sword Art Online.

Nah, there's no way I could be soured on VNs just because of this game when I know there are other games like Ever17, Fat/stay night, Umineko, Higurashi, Steins;Gate, 999, and VLR out there.

I'm thinking of starting Remember11 next. I was going to play Chaos;Head, but I couldn't get it to work in English.

Curiously, Takumi is one of the very few protagonist which I didn't liked (I only reached the midpoint of the first route, though, and only dropped it because I lost the save file since I changed computers)

Of those, I would start with FSN.

And FAT. Hahaha. I can imagine a fat saber lol

Hehe Fat Saber is still better than Sakura.

I should have clarified, I've already played/experienced all of those.

Could you guys help me with something? There's this VN I'm trying to think of.

  • Not translated into English yet, I don't think.
  • Romance & Love Triangle focused
  • One love interest is yandere
  • If you go down a certain route the yandere
actually edits the game files. She prevents you from reloading saves, and if you do manage to reload a save, she shows up in those reloaded saves and kill you and/or the other love interest.
  • The yandere character realizes that
she's actually in a game and she starts speaking directly to the player, not the MC.
  • Once you make the final decision in the game
she deletes all your save files regardless of choice and you have to start the game completely fresh again.

Can't remember the name and my GoogleFu is failing me.

Holy shit. Is this real?

I'll try searching for it in VNDB, but I can't guarantee anything. First time I'm hearing of such a VN

Yes it's real. I distinctly remember it from a thread on /v/ and finding a review of it on some VN blog. I discussed it with my roommates. I have a distinct memory of it. There was some translated screenshots where she's covered in blood and looking straight at the player and says, basically,
"I'm talking to YOU"
and
"What, you think you can just reload a save and fix everything?"
I even remember exactly what those screenshots look like.

Wow.

Ok, gonna need a bit more info to be able to narrow down the results. The VNDB tag system is helping me in that front, but it doesn't have a tag for the game manipulating the save files, so I'm using only the Heroine Yandere tag. Also, seeing as how the game is breaking the fourth wall, that helps.

-Can you remember if the game was on PC or a console? PS2, PS3, etc.?
-R-18?
-Company (VEEEERY doubtful you might remember this, but it's worth a shot)

If I need to ask you for more info, I'll just edit this post.

EDIT: I've narrowed it to these three. Any of these is the one you're looking for?

http://vndb.org/v7738
http://vndb.org/v13892
http://vndb.org/v10448

Kinda have the feeling it's the first one...

EDIT 2: I'm almost pretty sure it's that one now, seeing the tags and some conversations in the talk page.

-PC, I think. I specifically remember people talking about how it is possible to go in and edit game files yourself, in someway, so that would have to be PC.
-No idea, but I'd guess likely. I don't know if there are any H-scenes.
-No idea, sorry.

oh my god i must play this

That was my first reaction too when I saw this. I think my exact quote on /v/ when I was hearing about this for the first time was "If was going into this shit blind and had no idea what was waiting for me, I would be shitting bricks so fucking hard." and got a reply "Well if you got that route, that's your own damn fault" or something like that.

i am excited for No Thank You, though. That looks like a good one as far as VNs go.

I feel a bit dubious about the voice quality for Super Health Club. I think the devs are doing it themselves. (It might turn out great too, who knows.) I hope there's an option to toggle it off though. It's sorta uncharted territory here.

NTY looks super legit, I cannot wait. And I've only heard super glowing reviews for it, and that the story is pretty tight on it's own, even without the adult content. How about Coming Out On Top? There's a new demo for that game out now, and it's really great. (The characters are really endearing, and the dialogue is quite humorous.)

I feel like a crazy plot twist like that deserves a thread of its own. If it really is wrapped up in a shitty package like ponpo would have us believe, then that's some crazy wasted potential right there.

If you thought 999 was the quintessential VN example of merging story with gameplay, that takes things waaaaaaaaaaay further.

It almost does. It's such a great idea. The only weak point I think is that the crazy twist is arguable its main selling point, which ruins the surprise of the twist.

Well, I kinda doubt that we'll get the title translated anytime soon, so...

Why not?

True, not opposed to a thread about it. I'm surprised of the level of response in here!

Also, I was thinking, what if they made an anime adaptation of this? How could they translate the twist to that format?

Kinda have an idea: A mix of Amagami SS (adapted all the routes) with a (very light) mix of Endless Eight to fit everything.

The thing is how to deal with what happens next, since EVERYTHING gets modified after the Aoi route ends. No save buttons, and even the interface changes (it's in that video ponpo linked). I have no idea there lol

Maybe the thing would be a better fit for an OVA, since you can have a certain degree of control with that, which I think it can be taken away from the viewer.

I was almost thinking like an ARG, were like the last episode of the show just leaves a link to a website and you have to navigate choices there. It's still changing the interface in a way and playing into the surprise factor.

That game feel like a wild ride i would have enjoyed if i didn't get spoiled on it

The thing to use the serial code to unlock the true end is the best drm ever.

The code doesn't function as DRM. And Totono was mostly garbage. I wish Nitro+ would stop fucking around and get Narahara back to writing something.

647337fjuve.jpg

Anyway, finished Fraternite today, the new game from the Euphoria -team. That was significantly more fucked up than Euphoria but somehow less interesting. Euphoria was great because of the crazy plot twists, Fraternite is extremely straight-forward in comparison, the major twist gets spoiled in one bad end halfway through the game and is something everyone should have seen coming anyway. Ending is pretty good though.

I need something raburabu pretty bad now.

Edit: Oh, I somehow forgot about the "English translated" in the title, was just searching for some kind of VN thread. I'll be on my way then.

Was there a spoiler in the synopsis? SHIT! Curses and slaps self :x

The one Dresden posted? Well yeah, it spoils the whole twist.

Speaking of the VN, it really sounds like a one-trick pony. Like, you have to go through hours of generic slice-of-life romance stuff to get to the twist, then you go "oh DANG that's cool" for 5 minutes then nothing.

I guess it's cool for those people that play VNs purely for the slice-of-life romance, I guess.
