Eden is my favorite minori VN, very short but worth a read. Supipara almost ended them but being all-ages it's a good fit to squeeze a little money out of the west. They certainly improved a lot since they started focusing on delivering high-quality porn in their works, heh.

It looks like MangaGamer is embracing the Steam future after how well GoGoNippon did.

That's good to know, and the best news of all is that they're doing something to please everybody (if a game has an all ages and a 18+ they're releasing both)

Now, commentary about those:

The House in Fata Morgana: I can see this one doing really well for them in steam, due to the art style which is quite unique. I might give it a try to see how good it is when it releases.
Euphoria: *checks VNDB tags* Holy fuck, I don't think I'll be able to try this one with that kind of content Dx
Eden*: More minori content is always good in my book. I really, really want to see this one achieving success, sales-wise, in order for us to get Supipara and the sequel.
Chou Dengeki Stryker all ages: Really curious to see how well this one will do on Steam. I still hate the ending but otherwise it's a decent VN

I was hoping that they'd follow up the hype from No, Thank You!!! with another BL title. (Or at least something that appeals to a gay audience.)

It's kind of a shame in your case, but you need to remember that technically this is unproven territory, so it's understandable if they might not want to take risks before seeing how well their first BL VN does. Also, remember that these guys always have something in their pipeline, so I wouldn't be surprised if they were at the very least working in negotiation to get more titles with this kind of content.

I'm pretty sure that most of us would love to do that here, but, yeah, Steam will be good in getting more people buying VN''s. See how people are still asking for a Steins;Gate Steam release, even if we have both the disc and the download edition :/
 
What sequel? The game bombed hard, there won't be any VN-sequel at least, that's for sure.

This isn't really the medium for great writing, I can count VNs with legitimately awesome prose on the fingers of one hand.

Not sure what it is that you'd expect from a GitS-like VN. Try Kikokugai, maybe. Baldr Sky is fucking awesome Cyberpunk too, but not really anything like GitS.
Baldr Sky doesn't seem to be my cup of tea, but Kikokugai is quite interesting. Thanks for the recs.

Have you tried the Trace Memory/Hotel Dusk series? (Mainly for the DS, but there's one entry on the Wii.) The artstyle is definitely not moe, and the games have some really interesting stories. (It's actually two separate series, but they intertwine a bit.)

Another good one is DanganRonpa for the Vita. The artstyle is definitely anime, but more of an absurdist take on it. There are some minor romantic elements, but the majority of that is purely optional. The main focus is the crazy story and the murder mysteries surrounding it. If you like Ace Attorney and Zero Escape, you should really dig this too. (Plus, the sequel comes out in less than a month, so if you like it you won't have to wait long to continue the plot.) Pro Tip: Do NOT google anything about the game/series, as the internet is littered with spoilers about the series, and this series has a lot of things to spoil.

Also, if you've only played Dual Destinies from the Ace Attorney series, you really owe it to yourself to go and play the rest of the games. Ever one of them is worth playing, and I'd recommend starting at the very beginning, and going in release order.
I actually played and enjoyed Hotel Dusk but forgot to mention it. It's been a while since I beat that game.

As for DanganRonpa, believe me, I would've bought it day-1 if I had a Vita. If it doesn't get ported to any of the systems I own I'll probably buy it when I get a Via TV. Thanks for the heads up about the spoilers btw.

So I'll just hunt down Kikokugai and play Steins;Gate while I'm at it. What about recent PC releases? Anything similar to Snatcher or Hotel Dusk? Seems to me that a lot of VNs are being released lately so there must be something along those lines.

Either J-List or Jast USA. I don't think Steins;Gate was discounted during that sale, could be wrong though.

In other news, got Aselia the Eternal, and I can't understand why the world is named after an old FMV game from 1996; maybe I'm missing some poignant homage to Trevor.

Ah yes, thanks! I'll think I use Rightsuf :) Was also considering Saya no Uta from them as it's fairly cheap, from what I read of it (not much I add) it sounds creepy as hell. Not sure if I'd enjoy it or not but SG sounds like my kind thing.

Saya isn't that long (you can 100% it in one 4-8 hour sitting) and it's rather disturbing, but it's worth reading at least once. I really really liked it, even though I have no plans to touch it again for a long time.

In other news, got Aselia the Eternal, and I can't understand why the world is named after an old FMV game from 1996; maybe I'm missing some poignant homage to Trevor.
Congratulations, you just bought one of the more challenging strategy games I've ever played. My words of advice (some of which might not make sense until later):

1: Use every save slot (use a new one every time until you get to the bottom, then start over), and save ALL THE TIME. Save before combat missions, after major objectives/ fights, after missions, hell,save when you get up to go use the restroom. The game gets HARD, and you're going to need all the saves you can get so that you...
2: Don't let anyone die, reload if you do. While this might seem ridiculous, the game has permadeath and you only have one spare unit for most of the game, loosing a unit can majorly screw you hours to come.
3: Have fun. It takes some creative strategies to win some of the fights, you're gonna have to think outside the box. The game has a surprisingly good story that handles some surprisingly dark themes, and it's a great game all around.

And to anyone who doesn't own Aselia, I highly recommend you pick it up. Great game.

Thank for the advice, looks like I'll need to speed up the breaking of my habit of making single saves. Sounds like a pretty good game, although it might have to wait till I'm done with Kamidori. Any gauge for how hard a strategy game it is, I'm playing through Valkyria Chronicles atm for example.

I get that it's new for them, but it's already been met with a lot of enthusiasm. Multiple MG staffers have commented on how surprised they are at the amount of attention it's getting. At least it's supposed to come out before the end of this year, so I'm hoping that it does well enough for them that they can pursue similar games pretty quickly. (Though, I do wonder just what types of games they'd go after. Just like with every other genre, there's a lot of cruddy BL games out there. I really want them to find another gem like No, Thank You!!!)

At least there's two other English BL games on the horizon too. (Coming Out On Top & Super Health Club.) But I want even mooooooooooooooooore. When you've been starved for content for so long, it makes you ravenous.

I have Another Code R (the Wii sequel) but STILL havent got round to playing it, theres a part before the game even begins where you have to do "face recognition" (lining up your face with an outline like when you take a passport photo or whatever), and I just couldnt get it right so I couldnt be bothered :D

I remember your thread for Last Window and was seriously considering importing the game, but for some reason never did. Time to correct that. And I didn't know both Another Code titles were set in the same universe so I'll check 'em out as well.

Happy about the Steam news, I was very close to buy Chou Dengeki Stryker because it looked pretty awesome, setting, music and all. An All ages version on Steam works perfect for me.

After having watched The Scene and reading this my mind is blown out but I'm a bit sad of having spoiled myself. Or maybe it´s for the best because that would have given me a good scare.

The part after "The Scene" sounds amazing, I wish I could see how all goes after that.

I feel vindicated on my theory that the multiples routes thing is a cruel structure. In Katawa Shoujo I just went for one route, got my happy ending and never played again, I guess Miyuki would be proud of me.

Yeah it'd be cheaper to get it on sale on PSN and run it through PPSSPP if you really want to play it on a phone.

Well, it's only $2 more than on PSN (without a sale), which isn't too shabby, considering it's also in higher resolution. You also wouldn't need a super high-spec phone to run it if you get the native version. But yeah, I'd probably wait for a sale if I had an iOS device myself...

I need to correct something here before it haunts me, I've been playing it lately since I lost my good save for it, and you actually have two spare units for most of the game, not one. I also got about 10-15 game overs today alone, and had to reload several times because of other miscellaneous blunders. It's harder than I remember, I hope you're brain is ready to work a bit.

Not supremely relevant, but I'm going to have a review of Koi ga Saku Koro Sakura Doki shortly, as I'm almost done with the game and there is an active translation project; I figured it would be a good way for me to solidify my thoughts as well as get people interested in the game.

Quite hard, but doable once you get to understand how the game works. And yeah, as Yuuichi said, expect to have a few save slots used.

I finished Comyu, and I can't say that I liked it all that much. The common route actually setup something with some potential, but outside of a few moments in Benio and Kaguya's routes, it was never realized. The MC being so poorly characterized is probably the biggest issue. There's no consistency in his actions or motivations and he's infuriatingly idiotic. The fights are all pretty much the same, the best ones are actually early in the VN, so don't read this for good action scenes. Two of the routes are complete filler and Hisoka's character arc in so incredibly unearned and jarringly out of place. The ending somehow manages to feel really abrupt and even unfinished, but also way too long.

I have a bit of a request for information more than anything else, kind of a shot in the dark to be honest, so bear with me for a moment, if you will. So this might come as a shock to some people, but I actually buy the games I play (crappy phone shelf picture) and amiami seems to have gone to the liberty of not being able to find my current order (a copy of the konosora complete package, for the curious) and as such I've been left in a bit of a tough spot in that I'm leaving for college in just under a month. Normally I would just import the stuff through a proxy service, but I'm running short on time as I leave for college on September 13th and need to somehow get games within the window of the amiami order failing (likely to happen by Wednesday or Thursday based on the last time this happened, I need to do so because in the unlikely even the order is fulfilled, I need to be able to pay) and safely before the 13th, which leaves me with a couple options, and the request for information/assistance.

The information comes in the form of wanting to know if any of you have used dv8cag's service as it was recommended to me a few months back by another gaffer and while it looks reliable, I'm sincerely worried about speed, since the service I normally use (yokattaweb) isn't exactly the fastest place to buy from.

My choices at this point are basically that I either get games from resellers on amazon at kind of inflated prices and not get exactly what I want, or risk it time wise (something I'm not too keen on considering no one else knows about my hobby, and it could end badly ;_;), so any relevant advice appreciated.

On that note, I'm kind of deciding between Clover Day's, Tsuki no Yorisou, and Majikoi (may get 2 of the 3), so any opinions are also appreciated. Review for Koi ga Saku should be by the end of the week, I'm on the last route. Thanks in advance for whatever anyone has to say, as well.

The progress for SakuSaku has been moving pretty quickly actually, it's at 23% translated. It basically gets an update each time the VN tracker thread goes up. Although, it might likely get held up in editing.

I’m going to try and keep this as spoiler free as possible, so as promised and without further ado:

Koi ga Saku Koro Sakura Doki Review

Plot Synopsis:
Spring is the flowering season, the season of the cherry blossoms. It is the time for first meetings and partings, when the buds start sprouting.

Yuma is a second-year student at Mihaya Academy who listens to love problems from girls at the school and gives them thoughtful advice. This has made him quite popular and loved, resulting in a 21,000 yen (taxes included) ‘love bounty’ placed on him. The girls came to him with problems ranging from jealousy to infidelity. Having heard about so many troubles related to love, Yuma lost any desire he had for it.

One day, a mysterious girl appeared before him. She had never been in love, but she believed that it was a wonderful thing. She asked him if he would like to be in love, and that as a love fairy, she will help his love come true.

A girl who cannot fall in love. A boy who has no interest in love. If they end up falling in love with each other, how will the world change?

Koi ga Saku Koro Sakura Doki is a game that managed to feel familiar while maintaining an identity all it’s own. Written by a someone who may be a first timer under the pseudonym “ミナセ未来” (Minase Mirai), it’s a game that feels like it’s really trying to make a name for itself, but ultimately falls short of it’s creators ambitions. That’s not to say it’s a bad title by any stretch, it just could have been so much more.

The plot moved at a solid pace, with the game using careful scenarios and pacing that did a good job of keeping things moving without dumping too much on the reader or leaving him bored at any time, a commendable feat. However, this excellence deteriorates in some of the routes, as things sometimes stagnate for various reasons, often problems that Minase wrote himself into and could have avoided completely. The other major downfall of the games writing is that Minase seems to constantly try and defuse serious situations, positive or negative, with humor, which ruins what could have been some of the best moments in the game.

The art is a treat, and while it is just above average at times due to the more generic designs, the amazing SD art, with it’s great characterization and attention to detail really brought the game to life at points. The score is also standout, featuring some great piano work, among other things, but not quite memorable enough to stick around in one’s head for a long period of time. That said, it helps bring the game to life.

Character Routes (in order of completion):

Yuuri:
It’s hard to describe how I felt about this route other than that I felt “frustration”. I’m not sure how much of that is my fault, but I still feel like I played the route expecting one thing and got something completely different, a classic bait and switch. That said, when the route doesn’t feel like Minase is constantly playing catch up with himself as he tries to get himself out of things he shouldn’t have written himself into in the first place, it’s a good time. Regardless of how frustrated I was, I do want to replay it, and that should say something.

Mio:
Every once and a while, you play a route that feel so textbook that there’s not really anything to say about it, and Mio’s is one of those routes. It was a good time, but you can’t help but feel you’ve done this all before, and better elsewhere. There was also way too much crying for my taste, which probably didn’t help.

Konami:
Definitely the standout route of the game, it climbs ever so close to true greatness but Minase’s insistence on defusing serious situations stops it from achieving those lofty heights. Easily the darkest of the routes, it impressed even me, who hates the imouto (especially blood related) trope more than you know, which is saying something. It does a great job of keeping the route enjoyable while making you feel seriously uncomfortable at times. The poster route for how the game could have used more choices and slightly more serious writing to become something truly special.

An:
Certainly an above average route, but the “twist” at work here can be done far better. The lack of characterization of [minor spoiler]
Eleonora
drags down the route, because you only feel like you’re seeing half of a character. Certainly not a bad route by any means, and the plot revelations made here really help you understand the rest up to this point, but it was a missed opportunity.

Tina:
A solid route that tries to clean up all the loose ends while still keeping things interesting, ends up well paced until it collapses in on itself with a cop out epilogue. Once again, couldn’t shake the feeling that I had seen this done better before in another game. that said, it was still a satisfying conclusion to the game, and cleared up all but one plot hole that Minase had no way to get himself out of anyway.

As a complete package, I had a good time with it, but I couldn’t shake the feeling it could have just been that much better in places. But it’s certainly worthy of a translation, and I think the average person will like it even more than me.

Verdict: Play it if it sounds interesting.
VNDB score: 7/10

It does a great job of keeping the route enjoyable while making you feel seriously uncomfortable at times. The poster route for how the game could have used more choices and slightly more serious writing to become something truly special.

An:
Certainly an above average route, but the “twist” at work here can be done far better. The lack of characterization of [minor spoiler]
Eleonora
drags down the route, because you only feel like you’re seeing half of a character. Certainly not a bad route by any means, and the plot revelations made here really help you understand the rest up to this point, but it was a missed opportunity.

Tina:
A solid route that tries to clean up all the loose ends while still keeping things interesting, ends up well paced until it collapses in on itself with a cop out epilogue. Once again, couldn’t shake the feeling that I had seen this done better before in another game. that said, it was still a satisfying conclusion to the game, and cleared up all but one plot hole that Minase had no way to get himself out of anyway.

As a complete package, I had a good time with it, but I couldn’t shake the feeling it could have just been that much better in places. But it’s certainly worthy of a translation, and I think the average person will like it even more than me.

Verdict: Play it if it sounds interesting.

I just bought Danganronpa to go with my (forthcoming) Vita, in anyone's opinion is VLR worth playing on Vita for the English voices (bear in mind I've already completed the European 3DS version in Japanese). On that basis I'd say no, as I have seen all the endings but then again...

I haven't played VLR, so my opinion might not matter a lot in this case, but if I were in your shoes, I wouldn't replay the VN... UNLESS I really loved it to death and it's been a long while since I last played it. Also, you have another (great) game waiting for you and you haven't played that one, so it's even harder to recommend re-reading something else.
 
So Sekai Project just announced an official Clannad localization, full voice edition for Steam. Though the audio on their stream is so busted it's tough to actually hear more details.

The English dub for VLR is really, REALLY awesome, (except for one character) I dunno if I'd play it again just to hear it, but if you do, I highly recommend using the English voices.

Zero III in English knocked my socks off. The actress totally nailed it.

all for the non-pc versions.

i know steins;gate is already in english. i'll probably give it a go because i love me some time travel.

There will be a Kickstarter campaign for the release of CLANNAD on Steam. Prizes still being finalized.

, but I could half believe Sekai Project doing it anyway. In any case, it's going to be done with the Doki fan translation that was planned.

In other news, Eden got a steam page http://store.steampowered.com/app/315810/ (that isn't currently working right now). They also put up the goals for Supipara http://www.mangagamer.org/minori/... they're hopeful to say the least.
