Speaking of the VN, it really sounds like a one-trick pony. Like, you have to go through hours of generic slice-of-life romance stuff to get to the twist, then you go "oh DANG that's cool" for 5 minutes then nothing.
The whole game is like, 4 hours long so that's not a problem, and people who like normal romance are certainly not the audience for this. Totono's problem is that it's written by Shimokura. Great ideas, terrible execution in pretty much everything he has ever done.

The code doesn't function as DRM. And Totono was mostly garbage. I wish Nitro+ would stop fucking around and get Narahara back to writing something.

Anyway, finished Fraternite today, the new game from the Euphoria -team. That was significantly more fucked up than Euphoria but somehow less interesting. Euphoria was great because of the crazy plot twists, Fraternite is extremely straight-forward in comparison, the major twist gets spoiled in one bad end halfway through the game and is something everyone should have seen coming anyway. Ending is pretty good though.

I need something raburabu pretty bad now.

Edit: Oh, I somehow forgot about the "English translated" in the title, was just searching for some kind of VN thread. I'll be on my way then.

Nah, that's fine. We say "English Translated" since most of us don't know any Japanese, but in all honesty this thread is GAF VN General (we wouldn't be talking about Tototo if that were the case)

If you have something interesting to share, just share it with us! As long as it's interesting we'll comment on it.

Thruth to be told, I don't know a lot about Euphoria, only that it's somewhat extreme :lol. And "even more extreme"... kinda guessing this has guro in it?

Shame I only know mostly about translated VN, since untranslated VN are a totally unknown world for me (and trust me, I would love to be able to pick something totally new and going in blind.). I would be happy to share something like what you're searching for, haha. Those are kinda the ones I like to read the most :lol

Also, dat ahegao avatar

EDIT: Kinda fitting with your username, hadn't realised it was that xD

Yeah, euphoria did too. There is some real bad stuff in these games but euphoria also had a very entertaining mystery/survival story with a crazy true route. It's worth a read if one can deal with the extreme content.

Besides my OELVN thread, right? :p

The one Dresden posted? Well yeah, it spoils the whole twist.

I guess it's cool foNr those people that play VNs purely for the slice-of-life romance, I guess.

Yeah, that's it, the one one Dresden posted I'm afraid. I'm not really a that big fan of romance stuff TBH, as that just makes me sad that I'm not having that sort of fun :(

Forgot to add the Japanese in that

:p

But yeah, OELVN goes in your thread, VNs originally in Japanese goes in here.

I've been reading that people want Euphoria translated, mostly from /jp/, so I had an idea about the contents, but not exactly how much it relied on guro. Sadly, I'm not a fan of that, so even if it got translated I probably wouldn't be able to read it (I couldn't even read Saya no Uta, for example, and I'm guessing this one is way worse in that regard). Shame, since mystery/survival sounds awesome :v. Is the setting like, for example, Killer Queen where the protagonists are trapped in a place they don't know?

Played Sunrider first arrival.

I'm very surprised by the quality of the game dammit.
If i had paid money for it , it would have been a great purchase. I'm liking the fact that the core mecanics of the game work very well and can create challenge and i get this galaxy angel ( the games ) vibe out of it that i'm enjoying a LOT.

I think you'll like it.

You can find the demo on the developer's website.

Played the demo, liked it. Only thing that really threw me off is the art style change from the sprites to the CG, but other than that small nitpick it was fine. Probably going to pre-order it if I have any extra money left over from Otakon.

Cool. I agree that the two art styles are a bit jarring at first, but I've gotten used to it. It helps that I like both styles. The sprites are actually done by the creator of the game. She's been working really hard on her artwork, and has made considerable improvements. She draws great facial expressions. (If you google the game, you can still see some shots from the alpha version of the game and compare.)

The CGs are done by doubleleaf. She's pretty awesome. I love how clean her style is.

Oh alright, sounds like it's not a problem then.

But if it's as bad as you say, I'm not gonna stay around and wait for it to be translated. I spoiled the twist for myself already anyway.

so i'm completely in the relative mainstream when it comes to these. my only exposure has been to hotel dusk, the zero escape games, danganronpa, and phoenix wright if you wish to count those. i'm also aware of other big/popular stuff like steins;gate and ever 17 which seem like they would be up my alley, and i might check them out.

i'm interested in looking more into stuff that's on vita or 3ds, and i honestly have no idea where to start. being in english or having a fan translation isn't a prerequisite. i think my tastes are more towards the ones i already mentioned too - i have no interest in dating sims, and the more gameplay the better... but something like steins;gate which has apparently very little in the way of gameplay but a well-told story is fine too.

For Vita there's ports in Fate/Stay Night and Chaos;Head, both fit your requests. And there's Higurashi When They Cry for DS and iOS/Droid, it's really good. No gameplay in any of them though.

There's Robotics;Note for Vita from the same series as S;G and C;H/C;C, and Umineko for PSP? but I never played either so I can't honestly say anything yet.

edit: forgot about Corpse Party, that has gameplay

The PSP was the VN-handheld. If you don't require an english translation you should read Second Novel, it's PSP exclusive and pretty good. 428 is interesting too.

I'd say check out Saya no Uta if you can handle a few sex scenes that aren't meant to arouse. It's one of the most disturbing "games" out there about a dude whose perception of the world gets massively fucked up by some experimental surgery. It also has probably the most chilling soundtrack in anything ever.

428 sounds really good, imo. My tastes are kind of similar to AniHawk when it comes to VN's, I love mystery/twisty stuff and "people trapped in a place they don't know", I've played 999 (my first VN so it was amazing), VLR, Ever 17, Never 7, Hotel Dusk 1 and 2 were also very good. Time Hollow on DS was pretty good, Ghost Trick was very good.
Though I also played the Phoenix Wright series (1-4) before 999 which were superb as well, if they count as VN's :)
I really want to play/read Danganronpa and the sequel.

And Danganronpa 2 is just around the corner, isn't it? No better time to play DR than now.

Anyway, I think I should finally give Fate/Stay Night a try. I'm not that super interested int it, but it's well liked and I've been hardcore binging A Song of Ice and Fire for the last month or so, I really need to read something else for a while before I start the final book.

thanks for the suggestions. i'll look into them. i forgot about 428, but i've heard great things. same with chaos;head and corpse party.

regarding robotics;notes elite - i was looking into it, but it seemed that it was fairly poorly received. any idea why?

Just finished Sunrider : First arrival ( it's on steam )

I must say i'm very surprised by the game. Considering how it's done . i had a very pleaseant time.Highly recommanded.

And i hope they have already started working on the sequel.

Wonder if they are retranslating it or just releasing it as is (with a good measure of editing for quality's sake)? I have never read the title, nor I ever will, but I just went to VNDB, since I remembered that it was fantranslated and released before, and lo and behold, it was indeed.

Hmmm... at least it's somewhat more interesting that possibility (for me, at least) but that still doesn't amount to much, since I don't like Gore :( (though I could try to read it to see how far I can go before saying it isn't for me...). As you said, we'll see next week

Anyway. Changing topics somewhat: Still going through Comyu. I've read three routes already, and I'm finally getting into the meat of the game (AKA, the last two routes), since I feel like the other three routes where only there to ease you into the story, the world and how it works.

Totally random thought: Whenever Hisoka Soejima is in the scene, I can't stop thinking about the Persona character designer, Shigenori Soejima, since they both share the same last name, and Akihito usually refers to her by her last name ._.

EDIT: Down to the last one. I seriously, seriously can't stand Kagome, even if she's supposed to be the Main Heroine. I don't think I have ever hated an heroine this much before.

EDIT 2: Looks like jumping the gun is one of my specialties. Eh... I'm warming up to her. Somewhat. Still dislike her attitude, though

The developers of the gay dating sim/RPG The Summoned Brave & Fantasic(sic) Boyfriends for iOS are considering an English release. I hope they go for it, the game looks fun, and the artstyle is really cute.

So Good Haro just blatantly confirmed that one of Mangagamer's Otakon announcements is Hadaka Shitsuji.

https://twitter.com/Good_Haro/status/495496571740770304

Don't google that at work.

Edit: Upon further research, it might actually be Euphoria (don't google that at work either)after all. Well, we'll learn next week, I guess.
I hope it's not Hadaka Shitsuji. I'd prefer their next foray into BL be a game that I'd actually want to play. From what I've seen of HS, it's pretty twisted, and not in a fun way. (The game apparently pushes you to be as sadistic as possible to get the "good" endings. Not my thing.)

It is indeed a twisted game, but it is presented in a pretty ridiculous manner. So it is hard to take seriously. The problem comes when it does take itself seriously, such as
Komine's Route or the extra story
. It pretty much falls apart and becomes legitimately offensive.

As for other BL games that should be localized, I hear really good things about Shingakkou. So I hope for someone to snag that as well.

Yeah, I did a bit more research on HS, and it's definitely not for me. That game is gnarly hot mess.

I've heard Shingakkou mentioned a few times, but I wasn't familiar with it. After some preliminary googling, I'm not a fan of the artstyle at all (traditional yaoi designs are not my bag), but I watched the OP and the story at least seems interesting.

All the genre savvy jokes in Comyu are slowly killing me.

At parts it looks like they are outright breaking the fourth wall. Anyway, I'm done with it, and will post my impressions/a review of it later today or tomorrow (since I'm on mobile, and I'm not sure if I'll feel well enough to do so later, since I got sick >.<)

so the Eustia translation is dead, right?

Also tried playing Comyu and dropped it after the second 'I'm a feminist' joke.

Yandere translations is dead as a whole, so that's a yes.

:(

And was the joke really that bad? I didn't minded it as much, though it might have been because I rushed through the whole VN...

Speaking of which... looks like that review will have to wait. Haven't even started to put my thoughts about it in order, but in hindsight it might not have been that great, seeing as how the biggest impression that I still have about the VN is that I liked Benio and that's it :lol

Yandere translations is as dead as Takajun, who has been MIA for at least a year or two now. Still shocked no one has finished majikoi considering what little should be left.

Also thanks for telling me that I need not bother with Comyu; as it sounds horribly over localized. I expected better from ixrec.

Kind of relevant, but someone on reddit wrote a more or less functional personalized recommendation engine, something I was meaning to do for a while. I have the raw data now (271665 individual votes as of 7/21 with troll responses removed) and I'm going to spend the next few days rewriting parts of it and improving upon it in excel. I have work tomorrow and the day after, but after that expect rapid progress and test versions here, most likely.

I played Comyu through the first route and I think the common route was pretty solid, but Benio route wasn't very good. I don't mind it being an introduction, but the MC's wishywashiness at the end and how he
cheats with Rondo even after the end
didn't endear him to me at all. The fight scenes started to get pretty repetitive too, especially during the climax, but
the whole fight with Caesar as a whole was handled poorly.

What makes you think it is over localized? The feminist stuff seems to be right from the Japanese, you can even hear them say "feminist" in the audio. Not that Ixrec messing up translations would be a surprise.

Interesting idea, Yuuichi. Hoping to see that soon.

Oh. That too. I dunno if I had forgotten or my brain just blocked it, but I hated it when I saw it.

As for translation, localization and the novel itself. They are not bad, but there's a point where reading the same thing so many times gets on your nerves.

The way some groups have been translating recently is what lead me to assume it was over localized, as I haven't played the game yet (and probably won't for some time). I think ixrec is probably the best translator currently working, but judging by some of the jokes in Rewrite I'm more than sure he localizes to some degree, which mind you is not a bad thing.

I hope I'm in the right place to ask this so here goes nothing...

What is a good VN with great writing/narrative that has a non-moe art style and doesn't focus on romance?

I already played VLR, 999 and Ace Attorney: Dual Destinies and all of 'em were great fun. But I'm in the mood for something with an actual focus on quality storytelling that's available on PC. I already own Steins;Gate and plan on playing it sometime soon btw.

Something like Ghost in The Shell: SAC in VN form would be perfect. Feel free to recommend older stuff since my experience with VNs in general is almost nonexistent.

This isn't really the medium for great writing, I can count VNs with legitimately awesome prose on the fingers of one hand.

Not sure what it is that you'd expect from a GitS-like VN. Try Kikokugai, maybe. Baldr Sky is fucking awesome Cyberpunk too, but not really anything like GitS.

Have you tried the Trace Memory/Hotel Dusk series? (Mainly for the DS, but there's one entry on the Wii.) The artstyle is definitely not moe, and the games have some really interesting stories. (It's actually two separate series, but they intertwine a bit.)

Another good one is DanganRonpa for the Vita. The artstyle is definitely anime, but more of an absurdist take on it. There are some minor romantic elements, but the majority of that is purely optional. The main focus is the crazy story and the murder mysteries surrounding it. If you like Ace Attorney and Zero Escape, you should really dig this too. (Plus, the sequel comes out in less than a month, so if you like it you won't have to wait long to continue the plot.) Pro Tip: Do NOT google anything about the game/series, as the internet is littered with spoilers about the series, and this series has a lot of things to spoil.

Edit:
Also, if you've only played Dual Destinies from the Ace Attorney series, you really owe it to yourself to go and play the rest of the games. Ever one of them is worth playing, and I'd recommend starting at the very beginning, and going in release order.

Euphoria is going to be something I do a good job of pretending doesn't exist minus this post, too much for me.

Very confused by minori's sudden outpouting of western support?! (no good words to describe their actions come to mind) given their previously archaic anti-gaijin DRM and policies. Not sure what I should be thinking yet.

Eden is the one respectable title in the bunch for now IMO (verdict out on Fata, I know too little to comment), but it shows signs that companies are realizing that there is money to be made in the west, something some companies have been showing that they know by removing anti-gajin DRM from their games, a recent trend.

Edit:
The list of titles for the Steins:Gate sale is up:

SHADOW WARRIOR ONLY 960円!

I helped it make sense.
