Assassin's Creed Syndicate Review Thread

the review scores are all over the place. I still haven't played Unity yet so i'll get this when it's cheap.

Same conclusion. Skip Parity and get this when it's in the $20 range and all the patches are out.

I still need to do Black Flag.

Arkham City released two years after Arkham Asylum.

So? Arkham City is nothing more than a bigger Arkham Asylum. They had a great foundation and built upon it - which is smart.

Assassin's Creed does not have a solid foundation, and the dev team does not have the time to properly fix up all the bullshit. Doesnt mean they're "lazy". Come on now, they go to work every day like every other person on this planet. You think they just sit there drinking coffee thinking "today I wont fix bugs because I dont feel like it"? lol

As a fan of almost every game in the series, I couldn't bring myself to finish Unity. Tried it again just the other day after a few months, and got bored after 1 mission.

Told myself I was done with the series but now I'm being drawn back in by these reviews!

Weird that the reviews are starting from lowest to highest. Usually it's the other way around, or simply posted in the order they come. Walked in to the thread and initially thought holy shit, disaster, but then realised the format was making it look worse than it is. 78 on meta so far, which is about what I expected.

As a long-term AC fan, I was always going to buy this, but it's nice to see generally good scores.

The way AC games are developed (they overlap), there won't be any major, groundbreaking changes until next year at the earliest. If you enjoy AC games, looks like Syndicate is a good time, and runs a lot better than Unity. If you don't enjoy AC games, I doubt this one will change your mind.

No game is perfect, and Ubi gets a silly amount of flak. I played Unity a month after launch and it was fine. Frame rate could have been a bit better, but I didn't get many glitches at all in over 50h, and certainly nothing game-breaking.

Personally, I love everything AC and, as a Londoner, I can't wait to play Syndicate.

Order has insane graphics and smooth frame rate, same for DC, Forza and so on.

Is more about lazy devs than anything else.

Many great looking games with rocky solid framerate.

The Order is a corridor shooter with tiny environments, not a dynamic open world. DriveClub and Forza are racing games which are far less demanding.

Please think a little before calling developers "lazy". It's extremely ignorant and disrespectful.

Scores seem kind of all over the place.

So my conclusion is that it's probably decent enough AC game, and some people just don't like AC games.

Yea I was shocked when I came in lol

All over the place, the larger sites seem to be favorable though.

Eh. I forgot this was even coming out. I think that speaks volumes about where AC is for me... Maybe GameFly it in a drought.

Lazy no. The question you should be asking, is when it got ok for publishers to rush games out like this, and give developer teams stupid deadlines that can never realistically be met, without it being a buggy mess.

and that became ok when people kept buying the games anyway, in case you are wondering.

I guess, but it's the developer's ambition. They design the game that becomes too big for them to handle. I can't put the blame squarely at the publisher's feet.

Paid off shills.
Gamespot and IGN giving high scores for money wouldn't surprise me honestly. Seems Ubisoft didn't have money for IGN this time around, was expecting a 9 from them.

We all know GameInformer is a shill publication, so I am not surprised by them.

So everyone who gave the game a favourable review is a shill?

I like how AC's twitter only mentioned the 9/10 reviews.

And you expect Ubi PR to promote bad reviews?

So? Arkham City is nothing more than a slightly bigger Arkham Asylum. They had a great foundation and built upon it.

They redid all the arts. I didn't recognize Harley at first. The added lots of game mechanics like freeze blasts. They added Catwoman play. They added AR. They added side missions.

Name 3 games sequels that brought more improvements than the Arkham games.

So essentially a fun game that simply adds nothing new to the series? For someone that was burned out on the gameplay, I'll probably hold off for the foreseeable future.

As a Londoner I'm curious to explore my fictional hictorical city but I'm definitely going to wait a few months until it's a lot cheaper. I bought Unity earlier this year for a bargain price and thoroughly enjoyed (and completed) it but I'm not sure I really want to playthrough another AC game after Unity and Black Flag, I really just want to play in London for a bit.

Yeah sorry about that, halfway through I realized that I was doing it the wrong way around, lol.

I guess now the haters can have a small feeling of victory when they walk into the thread :p.

edit: There, fixed it for you :)

Or maybe, just maybe, the game is good?

Posts like this are just sad. How cynical can you be?

Eurogamer review has put this on my radar. Sure it's gonna get a lot of flack, but there's no way lessons weren't learnt from Unity. The London setting is also making it an attractive purchase despite the bandwagoning that is occurring in various threads.

As I said, they had a great foundation (using Unreal Engine also helped) and expanded upon it. That can be done in a reasonable time.

Unlike Assassin's Creed, which has a rotten and broken core - that pretty much cannot be fixed at this point unless they rewrite the game from scratch (which would take years - aint nobody got time fo dat if Ubi keeps demanding yearly sequels).

I'm sorry if I'm not fine with games like Unity coming out.

Nobody should be, it was a disrespectful game to people who bought it.

I'm on vacation and don't have a lot of time to read the reviews, but it's nice to see generally positive ones. Can someone give me a quick rundown of any differences between the ps4/ one versions which have been noted in the reviews? I'm thinking about ordering a copy, and I just don't want to bite on the one's version if it's notably inferior. Thanks!

So everyone who gave the game a favourable review is a shill?

Nope, reviewer could feel the game was a 9 despite all the issues the game has.

And you expect Ubi PR to promote bad reviews?

Nope, but not promoting the 8/10 reviews is funny to me.

I read all the reviews, seems to be a 77/100 game which I will pick up for during Black Friday sale. I don't believe the bad reviews have an agenda like you guys do.

Forbes - 7.5/10

There’s just no spark of life in Syndicate. Everything is so by the book it feels like it was made in factory by the child laborers I’m trying to free. They have refined the combat, stealth and traversal systems to a point where they’re as close to perfect as they’re ever going to get, but the actual content of the game itself refuses to evolve.

Laughed out loud at the bit about child labourers.

Arkham City released two years after Arkham Asylum. Someone's not working hard enough.

Yes, there are clearly devs that are just twiddling their thumbs, thinking, "Yeah, those glitches are fine." I'm sure it has nothing to do with management by the studio heads and publisher. So glad you can't make threads anymore...

Sooo much salt. So thirsty for negative reviews and evidence of 'shills'. Never change Gaf.

OT: Not so apprehensive about picking this up now. Good to see.

I'm glad it's doing better. I did think it looked pretty fun but of course we have been burned before with the franchise. I feel like these games drop in price pretty quickly so I'll probably pick it up when it hits 40 bucks.

enough people who are respected in the industry said that reviews aren't paid for at any of the big sites you listed that your claim is nasty at best

Not as hard as it was to give that review lol.
I think thats why you see some of the weird review scores. Well and some may just not like it but I would assume they still see the improvements.

I can see why the games are a little undercooked in areas. I blame Ubisoft, not the developers. Ever since II, I was looking for a game that feels like that. I avoided Unity and didn't care for IV since it was such a deviation from what I enjoyed.

Thanks for your responses.

I actually loved Unity, and one of the things that made me really enjoy it was the lack of bullshit hamfisted forced-in dead-end "future story".

Still waiting until Syndicate is cheap on PC first.
Eh. The more they started downplaying that aspect, the more I've become disinterested in AC. That was the connective tissue that kept me coming back every year.

Ubisoft has put out exactly one broken game. What about all the great games like Rayman, AC IV, Far Cry 4, Valiant Hearts, Trials Fusion, Child of Light? It's very easy to discredit a developer because they put out one subpar product, but it's an exception, not the norm.

Honestly, most responses in this thread have been pretty level headed.
