Shadow Tactics |OT| A worthy Commandos spiritual successor [PS4/X1 on August 1st]

"The thirst is real." - genre fans

I'm also ninety percent positive the audience skews older and thus more financially secure. The wonderful impressions go a long way I'm sure.

I'm having a problem dealing with guards in open areas. Right now I am on the third chapter and
I am trying to get Yuki to pickpocket the plans and I managed to kill the guard where the guy takes a break and kneels without being spotted, but now he has stopped making his circuit and is just standing out in the open. I don't know if that is intended or a bug. I can get to him, but the pickpocket animation is so slow I can't get away in time before a guard spots her. I tried doing the pickpocket from a bush without killing anyone and had the same problem. I thought about bringing the Samurai over to help but he's all the way across the map.

I found this too tough to do with Yuki alone. I brought Mugen over and was able to do it a lot easier with two different characters to work with. Usually used Yuki to distract and Mugen to kill and quickly cart off bodies until I could get in close with Yuki for the steal.

The ninja girls ability to freely lure guards out of position safely from rooftops is soooo good. Made mission 3 a breeze.

this game is so fucking good. Btw, 41k on Steamspy. Looks like to be a success for them. <3

I can see that.

One thing I use is the Camera toggle (can't remember exactly what it's called), but it's essentially a key that auto-cycles through various guard's vision cones in your immediate vicinity. I mapped it to C.

There's also that "peg" you can drop in the ground that shows a dotted line every time a guard is looking where you placed it, but I don't use that. Yet, at least.

I find it quite useful when looking for patterns in guards view cones. Find where and when their blind spot is and then sprint past them.

This game is tough, I'm not used to the AI being this good. They actually spot you in bushes away from the scene of the crime when they're on alert

I was quite surprised when I took out a guard and then a patrolling guard went into searching/caution mode when he noticed that the other guard was missing

Definitely, the first two levels are much easier with the guard placement so this isnt as noticable but once you have big areas filled with patrolling and stationary enemies like in the snow map, taking out just one becomes a challenge

It does. What it lacks is subs for random barks.

Yeah. Initially I thought the action responses were informing me of things but after switching to the English language version it's clear they're just a random assortment of remarks.

Btw does the full game have the following design oversight? Found myself clicking the wrong save more often than not due to this.

Something else I've noticed is the quick load menu only displays quick saves not manual saves, so if there's a more recent manual save it won't appear in either the Pause menu or following a mission failed screen.

Just beat the 4th mission. That one was surprisingly easy, but was a lot of fun.

Game continues to be amazing.

Are you guys killing civilians? I haven't killed any so far and that has made some things more difficult but I have a feeling when I get to the later levels I'm just going to get fed up and scream, "everyone dies!"

First playthroughs are for going HAM and beating the game. Everyone in my way dies. A lot of people not in my way also die, just in case they perhaps might end up in my way later.

Basically everyone dies.

If you knock em out they will simply run into the nearest building when they wake up without sounding an alarm. Unless they run into one of yours on the way there.

Such a great game. At this point this is one of my top 10 games of this year. I have 3 chapters to go.
Why, Mugen? Why??

I love that the characters have different replies depending on the environment and the general situation. I don't understand it all (Japanese voiceovers) but it's such a nice touch.

Some will, but others alert guards and put them in search mode instead.

I sometimes knock civilians out and put them into a well, telling myself it will be fine. If they die, it wasn't because of me, but an unrelated drowning accident.

It deserves 10 times that! Game is amazing.

Not killing civilians here. If I absolutely have to neutralize one I'll knock them out then place them in a place they won't run to a guard about. If you have Mugen he can just throw them on a roof and they'll never be able to tell a guard anything.

I wish the character and gameplay variety was better, just 5 characters and most simply have a different distraction ability. 3 of them are roughly the same ninja type.

No ability to explore indoors like in commandos 2/3, and theres no inventory system either

about 3/4th of the game are missions with just 2 or 3 characters, and most missions do feel kinda puzzle linear instead of some of the vast commandos 2 maps that had different entry points and encouraged exploration

It was still good though, I liked it and I hope there will be a sequel

Yeah, I'm on a strict No Civvies Die policy.

I've knocked out a couple here and there, but I mostly just go around them.

Though I gotta admit that it is kind of strange to knock one out on a balcony, only to dump them over the railing and into the bushes below. Crunch. "Hopefully you didn't break your neck."

Yuki-chan is a stone cold killer. I had her murder about 40 people over the course of the third mission. Mugen was just along for the ride.

Wait - how do you knock people out? How have I missed this?

I made really good progress and then hit a ridiculous area in chapter 4. I need to stare at it some more. I keep looking at it and see perfect routes and then realize there's some guard with his eyes looking right there and can't be distracted or whatever

You can switch your lethal abilities into non-lethal mode. There is a small button to the left of the sword/knife/pin abilities. Click it and a hand should show up.

Ohhhh right, I think that was at the start of the tutorial in the demo and I didn't replay the first level when the full game came out.

Just saw this game on steam, likely to on sale during winter?
You can find it at 20% off outside Steam and the game just released. If Daedalic is smart, given the excellent reception and wom, they won't discount the game too fast. They shouldn't discount it but instead add content to keep the value.

Will look around, currently trying out the demo.... Is it me or are the keyboard controls terrible? I'm using the gamepad for now, but will i miss on stuff because of this?

You can freely configure each hotkey on kbm. There's even several save slots for your configurations.

The hotkeys themselves I don't have an issue with but the player control/pathfinding I find at odds with what I want to achieve at times. Like clicking to a lower level doesn't reliably automatically move the character down, even when upon getting closer it highlights a way down (either by ladder or jumping). Ladders/vines also present some issues with controls.

Another issue is when clicking the move command to a different position the character AI often takes the most highly visible route rather than the closest, less conspicuous one, as illustrated below where the character will travel in enemy sight when clicking the area circled. The only way to avoid this is by selectively clicking move only when the cursor changes to the Jump action (even though it's literally just the adjacent bush).

Well pad is rather good, everything seemed too clunky on k+m.
Enjoyed playing through the first level, had some pretty satisfying moments, defiantly gonna bite on this one!

I think they have done this deliberately. If you want to go over an obstacle you have to interact with it to specify how you want to traverse it. I think having the characters choose the shortest route could have equal issues. For example, this system has stopped me from accidentally moving my sniper guy out of his tower probably a dozen times already. As long as you are conscious about how the system works, you should be able to be consistent.

I'm about halfway through and absolutely loving it. Even more than in traditional stealth games, the feeling you get when you find the weakness(es) in the enemy placement and start clearing the map of guards (and civilians, sorry guys) is incredibly satisfying. It's like peeling off a huge piece of wallpaper in a single move.

The way the movement system is set up, unless a direct height level change is ordered, the AI will try to walk the shortest path to the destination.

same goes for jumping from roof to roof. unless directly ordered, it wont execute the jump.

do wish that jumps had a larger hot spot when issuing orders, tho

Hmm I've really like the way the kb/m controls were setup though I did change camera pans to wasd. The pathfinding works correctly imo, I wouldn't want them to be taking shortcuts with a simple left click, those should be manually executed.

Mission 5 down, man I felt like such a pimp doing that mission. The level design in this game continues to be amazing.

Some mod that enabled multiple auto pathfinding routes would be welcome. One which takes the existing, longest route regardless of whether the character is seen by enemies and the other the most direct route without micro-managing simple actions like moving to a higher/lower level.

Things like jumping down a ledge need to require clear intention from the user, since they might be one-way actions. In the screenshot there, it's obvious that the jump should auto-path because there's a stair right there that would let you get back to high ground. But in a lot of cases, there wouldn't be any way to return except by loading.

Better solution is giving some highlighted clickable thing on the ledge so you can target your move to that. Those rings you can grapple up using function this way if you want to descend.

Yeah, i was kinda struggling with M&K but as soon as i switched to my ps4 controller there were way less accidents where i was spotted because i was struggling with the controls.
I'm currently in the fifth or sixth mission and this is probably one of my favorite games i have played this year. I loved the snow village level where you had to pickpocket stuff.

As I am finding with level 5, deciding to stealth your way in may become a problem when going back the way you came doesn't offer the same paths...
