The December mobile charts came out. December is traditionally the biggest month of the year for mobile revenue.

Observations:

1.) Namco has really solidified themselves as the top traditional publisher in mobile gaming. Given their trajectory, I expect them to solidly be the #1 company in Japanese mobile gaming altogether by the end of 2017. Mixi is the only one holding them back, and Mixi has failed to show that they can have success with anything outside of Monster Strike, whereas Namco very frequently releases strong mobile hits.

2.) Sega was only in the Top 10 mobile publishers in Japan for one month this year, and that was spot #10 in February. I believe they implied they're still on track for mobile revenue growth, we'll find out soon for certain, but their era as a mobile chart topper is probably over.

3.) After Namco, Square Enix and Konami are the other big repeat success winners on mobile. Paging through the top 10, there's no one else who is a traditional publisher and making their money from more than one game. Sony's is from Fate/Grand Order (which is published by the Aniplex division, and is separate from their upcoming mobile push from the PlayStation division), and Gung-Ho is still all Puzzle & Dragons (not that they were exactly a traditional publisher either). The other publishers don't even appear, sans the one Sega mention above.

4.) For the rest of the top 10, most of it has been pretty standard (from the same set of ~16 or so games) since Summer, with the one wildcard appearance being Dragon Quest Monsters: Super Light showing back up in the top 10 instead of Dragon Quest of the Stars. I unfortunately can't shed any real light on what happened there to propel DQM up so high.

At some point, we should get a report on the top 10 games in Japan for the year, and I believe the top 100 games for the year worldwide, which frequently features many Japanese titles.

The big things going into 2017 will be to see how Nintendo and Sony's PlayStation division do with their full entry into the industry, the results of Capcom's renewed mobile push, and how Level-5's oddities perform (assuming any can make it out the door in the first place).

The combat is very much different from Xillia. It follows the layout first established in Graces, built upon quite badly by Zestiria, and now taken to an even faster level compared to Graces with Berseria. The game focuses a lot on fast-paced combos and well-timed dodges (dodging at the right time will restore part of your action bar, which you need to perform attacks). You can try the demo if you are interested (available on PS4 and Steam), where you are thrown into some scenario and can try out the combat system. I found it to be fun but chaotic, yet after time I got a better grip on the different combos I could do and what would be the best way to fight certain enemies. The tactical aspect resides there: how to manage your combos, defending and action bar. You can find more impressions from the demo here.
I guess I will try the demo.

I watched some videos but I never get into how it works by videos.

Thanks btw.

How is the battle system in Tales today? Last I tried it was utter trash.

Better than Graces and Xillia.

Xillia was boring for me, and Graces was jusy okay. Zestiria was almost shit with that camera.

I guess I will try the demo.

I watched some videos but I never get into how it works by videos.

Thanks btw.

I played Velvet like Bayonetta, spam attack 1million time a dodge dozens while doing attack nonstop.

Nirolak, what are the chances of another publisher like Nintendo or Sony picking up Scalebound?

Would MS even sell it? How much would it cost to buy something like that and would an IP purchase include the assets they've created?

Sorry for so many questions but i have zero knowledge about this kind of stuff.

MS own the Scalebound IP and every asset created through its development. It's never being sold off.

If MS was interested in selling off cancelled projects(especially to a competitor) we would have gotten Cry On Wii instead of The Last Story.

As someone who has barely any clue about mobile gaming: Is there a franchise or anything which could serve as a potential light on the horizon for SEGA or do they really need to pull a hit out of thin air?

I think its dumb to refuse to sell something that holds no value to you, but im sure there are good business reasons for it that i dont understand.

Its just such a shame that 3 years worth of work are going to be wasted.

Momotaro Dentetsu 2017 will become one of the biggest sellers for the franchise. At least 500k should be topped. Retailers were afraid of supply problems for Momotaro because of the late year release date and they found it from elsewhere.

Sega's mobile hits are basically all new IPs (Hortensia Saga, Chain Chronicle, Monster Gear), with Puyo Puyo and Phantasy Star being the exceptions.

Sega actually made $375 million in mobile last fiscal year, so they would probably only need around an extra $75-$100 million a year to get into the top 10 publisher list in Japan, and the most likely candidate for that would be a new IP given their history.

To note, my Sega statement is very relative. I realize that not being in the top 10 sounds bad, but they're actually still making money hand over fist. It's just that if you go back to 2014 and 2015, Sega was a Big Deal™ in a way that they're not in 2016, and there's not an obvious title that will take them back there as far as I can tell.

Does BIU include digital? If not, then FFXV should be tracking far ahead of FFXIII over there (it would still be tracking ahead if they did, of course).
From what they write, it seems they only use the sales of digital games and from that number they extrapolate.

Anyway, it's a fact the PS4 version alone sold 200k+ so far.

Hm, mh. I guess they let their franchises sleep for too long? Sakura Taisen used to be huge but now...it probably wouldn't amount to much...actually, I just google'd on the side and yep, they created titles and they are failing. What a shame.

If they are implying they are still on track for $200+ million, that would still be a huge drop and not exactly reassuring.

That reminds me, didn't they create a platform for mobile titles with other developers? Whatever happened to that?

Sorry, that was me misconverting the yen numbers. I think they expected their mobile revenue to go up this year, but it's a bit buried due to how they report digital revenue these days.

Damn, Momotaro is doing pretty well compared to the previous episodes.
Nintendo/Valhalla/Konami must be happy.

I highly doubt Sony has the same IP potential as Nintendo for mobile. They are trying with Wild Arms and Arc the Lad but both look to be a failure, just like Breath of Fire.

Maybe they can try to do something with Soul Sacrifice or the other monster hunter type game that they own, now that they have killed the Vita.

Nirolak do you know how much money mobile made in 2016 compared to 2015 and how much more growth as well compared to 2015 thank you =D.

Well, that remains to be seen. If they're gonna be more junky gatcha games or actual, full fledged, premium RPGs.

Chris you should take a look at that new Jikkyou Powerful Heroes game and Power Pro Kun Pocket 12 and 13 (it already outsold 14).

I think its dumb to refuse to sell something that holds no value to you, but im sure there are good business reasons for it that i dont understand.

Its just such a shame that 3 years worth of work are going to be wasted.

I guess part of it is that you don't want to give someone else easy positive PR and you definitely don't want to see someone else make a big success out of a concept you shut down.

I'm not expecting much out of Sony's efforts.

What about stuff like Hot Shots?

The weirdest thing about the Forwardworks announcement was them bringing third party developers stuff to mobile for them. I have to wonder if that's an initiative to keep PS developers in their ecosystem.

Nice to see growth in Sumikko :). Looks like P&D X might eventually outsell the Mario Edition? Is it just legs or is P&D X being sold at really low prices whereas the Mario version wasn't? I guess if people are buying it's better than them not buying it at all...

so good the story is getting patched

I loved Lost Odyssey & Last Story. Blue Dragon was lame though. Of course LO & BD had low sales, they were X360 games. Didn't last story do better then Xenoblade?

I didn't love BD lol.

I was saying that TLS did well for the platform it was on, in the state the wii was at that point in time. It outsold what was largely regarded as the best RPG of the generation.

Xenoblade & Last Story sold about the same in Japan. Xenoblade had better legs.

Xenoblade Chronicles 79.163 163.442
The Last Story 109.704 157.359

Lost Odyssey 60.376 109.517
Blue Dragon 82.286 203.740

Blue Dragon on 360 outsold Xenoblade and Last Story on Wii.... lol

Sukiyaki was hit hard from limited shipments this week.

Right when Yo-Kai seems to have recovered a bit.
Kind of unfortunate :(.

If you ignore digital that is. in Germany it's way ahead of XIII as we got BIU update today (it reached 200k far faster).
Cool to hear.

They're basically continuing on with the teams, but the brands (on console) seem to be getting the axe in favor of chasing new opportunities that are potentially more relevant to the current marketplace.
To be fair, that's how you grow a new audience right? With new experiences? Having totally new brands gives them the freedom to do that.

That's probably their best shot, but it also feels the easiest for COLOPL to upend by releasing Rune Story Golf.

True, the only other SCEJ IP I could see being a surprise hit is Gran Turismo oddly.
Knack wouldn't be surprise ;)

Btw, considering this is the Media Create thread for the week of Switchmas are we going to get a Road to TGS style summary/discussion?(I remember when we thought it would be part of the normal Road to TGS)

That reminds me general consensus was that we'd start seeing announcements without platforms or that would add Switch SKUs after its reveal. Has that/will that be the case?

The only real ones that seem suspicious are Great Ace Attorney 2(no platform) and MHXX(releasing right when Switch is probably going to).

With Momotaro doing so well, I'm wondering where things go from here. Will Nintendo pursue another Hudson IP from Konami (Bomberman?)? I still question choosing Valhalla as the developer when ND Cube is the one with ex-Hudson employees, unless Valhalla actually has former Hudson folks of their own, and possibly specifically the Momotaro team? They seemed to nail the look and feel from what I can tell, which can't be easy to do I'd imagine.

Is that Famitsu? I think Media Create had Xenoblade and The Last Story over 190k and 170k respectively by the end of 2013. But yeah, doesn't change your point. Blue Dragon was more popular than these games even on the 360.

Personally I vastly preferred Blue Dragon to The Last Story as well.

You don't know how happy you just made ppl

Don't worry. They'll look at the 6 million shipped+digital and get mad again.

So much damage control from the same people defending FFXV since weeks. It's getting tiresome to see the same arguments over and over, like "critical success !!!" (one of the worst rated FF mainline game) or "hey it sold more than FFXIII !!" (we have zero worldwide sales figures for FFXV, aside from shipped units that aren't even that reliable since they seems to include digital sales), and my favourite "it didn't bomb guys stop trolling !!" (when it's still hasn't sold a fucking million unit, when FFXIII did 1.5 million in a week). Every Media Create threads has these, every weeks since the game launched.

At some point, it would be nice to just let it go. At least until there are some solid "proofs" that the game is effectively doing good in any way.

6 million shipped + digital, 1 million over the initial shipment + digital, in less than 2 months. You know, at least there's some valid basis for FFXV's global success unlike the opposite which can be summed as:

It bombed in Japan (which accounts for 15% of total shipment) and there's no proof of its success as we didn't get sales numbers, so there could be millions of copies on shelves, because as we all know, retailers are going to request further shipments for a supposedly bombing game

I do not think it's a bad idea under the stipulation they sufficiently fund these ideas, which is also something they sounded very reluctant to do with games that weren't proven brands.

If no one else does, I'll list out the various games announced for the Switch, and then separately post my thoughts on them.

The only real ones that seem suspicious are Great Ace Attorney 2(no platform) and MHXX(releasing right when Switch is probably going to).
As it stands, the only ones I'm expecting are Tekken 7, The Great Ace Attorney 2, Inazuma Eleven, Megaton Musashi, and Monster Hunter XX.

That's not to say others aren't possible, but that's about all I'd be willing to give an above 50% chance of happening.

If no one else does, I'll list out the various games announced for the Switch, and then separately post my thoughts on them.

Yeah those seem like good guesses. I'd maybe say some form of Musou but then KT is probably make a first party one for Nintendo anyway.

Two copies sold? That's not a bomb guys, stop trolling!!!

I still believe a possibility could be Musou All-Star at launch (it comes out on March 2nd, it wouldn't be that later on Switch's launch), with some Hyrule Warriors characters as Switch's exclusive content.

Don't worry. They'll look at the 6 million shipped+digital and get mad again.

You're in a Japanese sales thread. FFXV is a massive failure in Japan. That's why there is so much negativity around the game and I'm not sure why so many people are getting defensive about that.

WW sales are a different proposition. So far it looks like FFXV has bounced back well from XIII and is clearly not a bomb. Still we have to wait and see how sales hold up. It was released in the holiday season which will most likely mean bigger up front sales. We also don't have sold numbers so we can't be sure how many are left on shelves (though if they had a second shipment it shouldn't be a huge amount). At the moment we don't know how much further than 6million FFXV will go. With such strong PS4 sales I think FFXV could ride that train but we'll see.

SE still have the development issues to deal with though. These games take far too long and cost far too much. No doubt it's still profitable but nowhere near as much as it should be.

These are 2 separate conversations though. This thread becomes so hard to read when people start mixing WW and local sales. So many posters in here clearly have an agenda and it makes for difficult reading.

Also plausible. The problem with trying to pin down a specific Musou is that five more will be announced by March!

The opposite has happened. Mario Edition fights to sell the initial shipment.

Oh really? Hm... I thought I saw hiska or horuhe showing P&D X selling at like 500-1000 yen. Anyways... I guess that's good for the series if the latest game is showing legs and might outsell the previous title eventually right?

Is that Famitsu? I think Media Create had Xenoblade and The Last Story over 190k and 170k respectively by the end of 2013. But yeah, doesn't change your point. Blue Dragon was more popular than these games even on the 360.

Personally I vastly preferred Blue Dragon to The Last Story as well.

Yup Famitsu.
