Ghost in the Shell |OT| I was born in the sea of information

Someone ban this fool.

For telling about the harsh reality about Hollywood? That is what happens in Hollywood. I'm not part of their marketing team. I do not create the sexism in there. As a journalism I just tell what I see.

Sex sells. ScarJo is the flavor of the month sex. Why do you think they dress her in that skintight latex suit?

Regular people looking to wolf down popcorn and suck down soda don't want long conversations about existence and human agency in their movie about fightin' robot people.

This. It's a confusing movie with metalayers of pseudo-philosophy about our existence. Typical popcorn eater will stay far away... BUT, wait! It has ScarJo, then you must go watch it! Sex control, wait no, damage control. Hollywood is based on sex.

Laputa has Miyazaki and Ghibli behind it -- it would theoretically be less "risky" than GITS on name only, but obviously the content of GITS and the attractive, strong female lead lends itself more to appealing to an adult audience than two children on the run who fly to an island in the sky. I think Disney could turn Laputa into an absolutely massive success though if they made it into live action.

Thank you.

Now that the reviews are out, I must say that I'm really conflicted with this film.

First of all, Ghost in the Shell is one of my favorite movies of all time. The Nietzsche-esque essence of self and existence was always going to get dumbed down to some extent, but with the right people behind it, the essence could still of been captured. The 1995 movie (and its sequel) is a highly psychological film with that explores what's beyond the range of normal or physical human experience. To capture that essence, you absolutely must have devoted people behind the project who are not only capable film makers that can make great films, but it's also essential that they are fans of the franchise.

Unfortunately, the Hollywood process is such a mess that a lot of things get butchered. The first problem lies with its director, Rupert Sanders. However you slice it, Sanders is not a great film maker, nor is he a particular good one. at that. His only film prior to this was Snow White and the Huntsman, which wasn't received well at all, sitting at 49% at RT. I can't speak much about the writers, but hearing about the writing on this one and looking through at their previous work makes me draw similar conclusions about them as well. Second of all, I'm very aware that the studio is trying to build a western franchise around this IP. A 100 million+ dollar movie requires an A-lister heading it. It's a shame that they went that route, because had they had the tenacity to make this a more medium-sized film (preferably in the 40 million dollar range), then they'd have more options to explore and widen the scope of the story and the universe that they're trying to build, delivering a more faithful adaption in the process. They wouldn't need to resort to whitewashing or dumbing down the film. It really could of been a great picture, instead of the soulless, albeit pretty film that it is now. The visuals wouldn't have been as amazing, but the quality story that this one lacks would of made up for it, I think. In a world where story's crucial, that's really what matters in the end. The technical part of this movie might be on point, but the film makers are forgetting the allusions and the true message that the original film is trying to portray in the process.

So, am I mad that we got this? No. I'm very happy that Hollywood is making an effort to widen their scope beyond books and video games, and Anime and Korean films truly are untapped markets with great potential. However, Hollywood must realise that it's far more important to respect an established franchise by honoring its conveyance and its core message. Hopefully, the discussion surrounding this film have brought some food for thought for the executives over there. Obviously, it would of been fantastic had this been a blockbuster flick that was adapted faithfully with no whitewash in the process, but since that's eons away from the current reality, hopefully, they'll take steps towards that direction. Otherwise, nothing will ever change.

I still don't get this. In this age of 80s/90s nostalgia and reboots of classic properties how in god's fucking name is GitS risky? The GitS aesthetic is literally Blade Runner run through the cultural filter of the 90s.

Do you want to know what would be risky? A Hollywood adaptation of Laputa: Castle in the Sky. This... this is not risk. At least, it's not risk by any reasonable definition of the word "risk". Certainly not as risky as an original furry space opera starring Mila Kunis and Channing Tatum.

Regardless of it's relative popularity, it's a total cult film in the grand scheme of things. Unless you have a video game behind you, or you were effectively a Saturday morning cartoon, you've got a very, very small built-in audience in America when it comes to anime. People sort of overestimate the scope and reach of something like this.

Laputa has Miyazaki and Ghibli behind it -- it would theoretically be less "risky" than GITS on name only, but obviously the content of GITS and the attractive, strong female lead lends itself more to appealing to an adult audience than two children on the run who fly to an island in the sky. It's not that tricky. They do it ALL the time with white actors even with major budget films. The same names and examples are repeated over and over in these threads and are just handwaved away

We have explained this a million times ITT. If they don't get it, it's because they do not want to. *sigh*

...right. As we all know, Hollywood has never questioned the bankability of women. Sexism is totally unknown in Hollywood.

Sexism is a thing. Women suffer. White women suffer the least of them all. This isn't even close to being debatable. ScarJo benefits from white privilege, period. Sexism in Hollywood is a problem worth dissecting, but the matter here is purely a racial one.

How can you be this delusional

Easy. Be a racist. Which he is.

I mean, Asian women can't be sexy? Whew. Man. That's…there's a lot to unpack with this guy.

So what? That does not make me a racist. I have the exact same right for my opinion than you.

My opinion of your opinion is that it's garbage. You're really falling back on the "but muh free speech" defense, huh? Like that has any relation to what you said.

Isn't it alarming to realize that there are not even semi-big Asian-American actresses at the moment? That's not because of racism, there just aren't anyone.

How dense can you be? Honestly. People in this thread have been arguing since page 5 that there aren't "semi big Asian-American actresses" BECAUSE THEY'RE NOT EVEN GIVEN THE OPPERTUNITY TO BECOME SEMI-BIG BECAUSE OF RACISM IN THE INDUSTRY.

THEY CAN'T PROVE THEMSELVES IF THEY'RE NOT GIVEN THE CHANCE TO DO SO.
Show me the proof that they're not being auditioned properly.

wowzers. Denying the entirety of racial bias to save face. You're right, there are only 4-5 asian actresses out of the tens of millions of asian women out there. Hollywood is a colour-blind, pure meritocracy!

I never said that and never will. You guys just try to twist me into something I'm not. Typical internet behavior. Really weak and mostly childish idiotism.

Asian, especially Japanese women are my favorites. Why do you think my username is Amaterasu? It's a fetish.

Try harder.

The whitewashing of the film is an interesting subject and I don't think it needs its own thread, but there's so much to scroll past in here with people witch hunting other posters. There's seriously nothing that will come of that unless you're more interested in seeing people banned than discussing the movie, reviews, and impressions. I don't mean to sound like a backseat mod but it's getting ridiculous. I'm trying to figure out whether to see this or not goddamnit.

People aren't fetishes. The fetishization of asian women by white men has been understood to be a problematic racist phenomenon for some time.

Try harder.

Racial fetishism itself is pretty shitty but that's another can of worms.

Sad to see this might be a stinker but I'm still going to see it tomorrow night I think.

I'd love to talk about the film. I'd just prefer to do so in an environment devoid of open racism. Sorry if all the "back-seat" modding is putting you out.

Also, lol at "witch-hunting". The guy spoke, people took issue and responded. Forums, amirite?

Yep. I'm part of the problem, but I blame manga, anime, hentai and Hollywood for this. They should ban all anime and manga because they promote women inequality. Fucking filthy and disgusting things! Actually they should ban Hollywood for showing sex on theaters! Immoral. And think about the children as well.

I don't actually need to try to be hard for my fetishes. Sorry.

EDIT: But all is well in the kingdom of purity and utopia. Blame the moviefreaks and other enthusiasts for pointing out Hollywood's problems. That will surely solve the problem.

Sadly, I need to go. Going to watch Marco Bellochio's Fai Bei Sogni tomorrow. I saw A United Kingdom today which was all about racism, apartheid, seggregation and imperialism in the 1940s Botswana. Rosamund Pike and David Oyelowo led this wonderful movie. I didn't find myself in there. Great movie and everyone should watch it, because of the important topic. 4/5

I don't think people were asking for your racial fetish...

It's still on us to not derail the thread into like 60% a back and forth with one user.

Or people like different kinds of beautiful people with different kind of backgrounds? I don't know. That might sound too biological and evolutionary. Who knows, I'm no Darwin. I just know I love women.

Hah if you weren't delusional before you certainly are now.

Hey Mr. Movie Journalist, have you seen Get Out? Because if you haven't I think you should, otherwise I'm confused why you don't believe in liberal racism.

Sex sells. ScarJo is sex, some random Asian-American actress is not sex.

lol

That RT score dropping is a beautiful sight.

"My job is to review actors" *Says Naomie Harris is a budding star despite being an actress for the better part of two decades now*

If your job is to evaluate actors then I don't even need to wonder why there's such an issue in Hollywood with minorities.

What even is "reviewing actors?"

He like, ignores the rest of the movie, and just reviews the performances? Weird.

With his overt emphasis on sexiness, maybe his only experience with evaluating actresses is from the casting couch

Next week. It opens late here. Eager to see how it is. Horror is my favorite genre.

It's shitty english meaning that I review movies. And while I do it, I judge actors and actresses by their skill, not by their other traits.

Sorry, I don't do /s. I expect people to understand what is humor and what is not. Sometimes I add an happyface when I know the audience is what it is. :)

Just saw it.

The original anime movie was the first VHS tape I ever preordered. That was back in 1996 when I was 18 years old. Loved it to bits.

In regards to the new Hollywood adaptation I was very pessimistic. But what can I say...that is one solid SciFi flick! Very, very pleasantly surprised. If you're on the fence: Give it a chance. I can't believe it turned out this good.

Yeah. I'm gonna be blunt.

You being a film critic does not absolve you of your biases nor does it infer that you have any idea what you're talking about in regards to anything about the inner workings of Hollywood. Hollywood is not, nor has it ever been, a meritocracy.

It's especially baffling if you don't even live in the US to even pretend you have any idea what you're talking about.

I know. What the fuck. The guy actually speaks what he thinks! He has a different opinion, he should be burnt at the stake! Witchcraft! Darkness!

Hollywood is a sexist, racist, old and conservative fuckhole full of old farts sitting on the money. It was build on white and jewish money (China is involved now). It is still what it has always been. How the fuck can I twist my words so you can understand that I agree with you? I am only saying what I see, I do not agree with Hollywood. I am not part of it, yet you crucify me like I'm Stalin.

All I'm saying is that there might not be Asian-American actresses at the moment who can pull up a job in a niche 120 million sci-fi flick based on an anime. It needs sex to pull that minimum from the box office. That sex is ScarJo. It most definitely isn't some random b-list actress. That is fucking all I have to say. That is not racist. I know Hollywood is full-blown KKK madhouse, it's like 'murica fuck yeah in k-mart doing Kumbaya while smoking crack. Awful place.

And my job is to review the entertainment that comes out of that shithole. I do not mix politics or leftist or rightist agendas in my reviews. I watch movies as entertainment. If they have something to say, it's even better. But mostly they're just entertainment made to catch people's attention so they don't get into trouble.

Now I'm off. I had to write a piece about the new Planet of the Apes trailer.

Peace, love, sympathy and sex for all! (I did not attach /s here either)
