Baldur's Gate 2 (the true #1) coming in at #3 is about as high as one could reasonably expect it, so we'll take it.

Phantasy Star 2 got jobbed but that's no surprise, really.

I think we are at a point where the Genesis trilogy of Phantasy Star has become but a distant memory for the industry and that is really sad. II and IV are great classics.

Why are people upset with Chrono Trigger getting the number one spot? It was the result of a dream team coming together.

Not a bad top 20 at all, but I am indeed saddened that classic rpgs that were huge influencers on pc like Dungeon Master and the Westwood classics (EotB and LoL) were not included anywhere when "ok" jobbers like Betrayal at Krondor were. Not to mention Ultima Underworld...

Edit: nm, at least Uuw was included, though pretty low.

Hironobu Sakaguchi, Yuji Hori, Akira Toriyama, Yoshinori Kitase, Nobuo Uematsu, Hiroyuki Ito, Yasunori Mitsuda... yeah... those names working together was monstrous.
I'd be surprised if we see anything like that in game development again.

No Soul Blazer. No Wasteland 1 or 2. No Terranigma. Those are probably not top 20.

No Final Fantasy Tactics or Earthbound though those could make it to top 20.

ed

NVM, OP didn't update.

20 Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together
19 EarthBound
18 Final Fantasy Tactics

I'm good with that. Top 20 is basically picking nits. The fact that these three great and old games were there is good enough.

But Earthbound > Chrono Trigger. Tactics Ogre > FFT

That is one of the, if not the best top 10 RPG's of all time lists I have ever seen. They absolutely nailed the top 3, and on any given day I can make a case for either game being the BEST RPG OF ALL TIME.

I am also absolutely thrilled they understand how important games such as Baldur's Gate 2, Planescape: Torment, and World of Warcraft are to not only our industry, but RPG history.

I will say the top 20 is a lot better than the bottom half of the list. Except for pokemon yellow because honestly..

I don't think anyone is upset. I've come to expect CT and FF VI to be top 5 pretty much from every ranking list. It's more that not everyone thinks it's the number 1 greatest RPG out there so seeing it always ranked 1 might be a little hard to understand for people who feel that way. I don't care that it's number 1 because it is an amazing game but It's definitely not my favourite.
I've never played Legend of Dragoon - these lists are always a group effort and it had other supporters. As a group we do our best to synthesize a lot of dissenting opinions into a single cohesive list, and it isn't easy. It's hard to know how high to place a game when only ONE person in the room has played it, but insists it's one of the best-ever, for example.

If you're going to make a top 100 list then shouldn't the people allowing these placements all know what they're putting in? Most RPG fanatics would easily point out that LoD is not deserving to be placed above games like Valkyria Chronicles, DQ VII, EverQuest, etc. It even being allowed to be ranked while huge games like Final Fantasy VIII and X don't even qualify is a bizarre choice no matter how much dislike they feel towards these two. VIII had it's own influences and while it's nowhere near as huge as games like VI, VII, CT, it brought forth full proportioned characters, a different approach to developing it's lead character, gorgeous soundtrack that blended many different styles two of which are huge hits outside of just the game itself and it's own unique battle system. X was also doing that for PS2 Final Fantasy and was the next big jump for graphic changes and voice acting.

So I guess my point is, what actually determined what you put on this list and where they went? Like I would love to see how someone argued LoD over all the games I just brought up lol

Edit: The funniest thing of all is I actually LIKE LoD. I grew up with it and it will always have a special place in my heart but that doesn't change the fact it's a very mediocre RPG.

Looks like Nocturne was snobbed out of a position again. At this point I just expect it to be absent from these lists. I suppose Final Fantasy I, DA: Inquisition, The Legend of Dragoon are the better choices.

Can't say I'm surprised about the first 2 positions. I was expecting either CT or FF VI to take the top spot and there it is. Either way, pretty uninteresting top 100 all around.

Wow, I thought I was doing good... but now that the list is complete:

38% - Total games on the list I've played
25% - Total games on the list I've finished

Clearly, I have to step my RPG game up! ;)

It would be kind of interesting to have a contest to play through the list, but on the other hand this seems infeasible... even rushing, some of these games are a large number of hours. At one a week (a breakneck pace), it would take two years :D

No Valkyrie Profile at all? They must have forgotten it. You don't formulate a list of top 100 RPGs and not include either game. Even if you don't think it stands with the best of the best, the popular belief is that it's damn good.

Edit: I just browsed again and noticed that no tri-ace game aside from Star Ocean 2 made the list. Damn, man. RIP the dream. I would have placed Resonance of Fate... somewhere in the top 100.

I have played 82% of the list and will probably end up eventually playing half of those I haven't. Unfortunately not a single game on this list was new to me, it would have been nice to make some new discoveries.

Very surprised Fallout 2 is as high as it is. Usually, its between Fallout 3 and New Vegas, but someone is actually acknowledging the role playing wonder that is Fallout 2. I am okay with this. Then we have Deus Ex, The Witcher 3, KOTOR, Dark Souls, and Baldur's Gate 2. Overall, this turned out to be a pretty good list. Apparently Oblivion isn't good enough to be on the list at all though. I should probably bother to read through the list to see their reasons for why they chose what they chose though, now that I've seen the full thing.

Infinitely better taste than Game Informer, I'll say that much. Including Destiny on their list and then putting Skyrim at #1. Pretty DIS-GUST-ING.

Chrono Trigger is so damn good. I played it much later after it came out on the DS too. So nostalgia aside, its just a perfectly crafted RPG in my eyes.

Decided to tally them up for myself while I was it.

40% played
30% finished

Not so dissimilar boat. And no you can't really race through them. Game lengths are too different I'm afraid.

I know I'm kind of a fanboy but not having Gothic 1 or 2 in this list is just plain wrong. Apparently the authors didn't play them. They missed out big time...would've expected more from a gaming site around this long.

There is nothing fine at all from Ni No Kuni battle system lol. Wut are u smoking there?

Yeah, I simply disagree. I had plenty of fun with it. Didn't have too many AI issues either.

FF X going to a top 20 RPG lol

Nothing wrong with that at all, though I would put VII and IX ahead of it.

That's just how good FF was at the time. I think it's a joke that it's not on this list.

Overall the choices are solid. The placements are horrific. Some very noticeable absences like Final Fantasy X, no Xenosaga, Lost Odyssey.

Are what I would prioritize. The rest it's up to you but LoD is not a must play by any means but if you're interested give it a shot.

Well, when Dark Souls and Demon's Souls are considered RPG's, then Bloodborne can be called one as well.

Those are a little more versatile but yeah, to me Bloodborne is an action adventure game and I'm ok with that, it doesn't make it a lesser game. Is one of the best games I've played, ever.

Suikoden 2 definitely first on to play
Tactics ogre PSP version
Bloodborne

Everything else might have gameplay thats a bit too outdated.
If you like Suikoden 2 -> Lufia 2
If you like Tactics Ogre -> Most recent 3DS Fire Emblems
If you like Bloodborne -> Witcher 3

Surprised at that #1, thought it would have been WoW

Sucks that Runescape never gets a mention on these types of lists, it's like people forget it exists because it's a browser game. I mean I don't think it's the best game ever but i think it deserves a slot somewhere

These are significantly different games so there is no really right answer. Lufia 2 is probably the best classic JRPG in there. TLoD and NWN1 are kinda bad and easily skippable.

Dark Souls not in the top 5 is a joke, but at least they put Skyrim at #25 so this list is automatically better than GI's

I have played 62% of them. I didn't keep track of how many I finished. I probably own 85-90% of them. My backlog is big.

EDIT: I went back and counted. I own 91 of them. Two of my missing titles are Eve Online (zero interest in that one) and Phantasy Star Online (dead). I also don't specifically have Pokemon Yellow.

Thanks for the suggestions peeps. Added my faves to make it easier.

If I choose to prioritize Suikoden II, I'll definitely play the original first. I love having a Vita. 😁

How in the holy fuck does Gothic not make this list???

Gothic 2 was an amazing rpg experience and was well ahead of the Elder Scrolls games that came out around that time.

The Gothic games were not popular in the States. Reviews at the time were decent, but not stellar, and sales were no doubt poor. It wouldn't surprise me if an American console-focused site like IGN lacks people who actually played those games.

The best thing about the original Neverwinter Nights are the custom multiplayer persistent world servers, some of which have been running for over a decade. I personally found the single player very lacking.

As someone who's never played a FF game and is just going by what I hear about from the fanbase, I had no idea VI was considered to be such a classic. It got #2 on both IGN's and GI's lists. It's always VII this, VII that with the fanbase, with some VIII and IX sprinkled in (from my inexperienced, outsider point of view). Just find it surprising, is all.
