Pregnant woman ran down a fleeing man 'who stole purse from her car' in Walmart

Holy shit! He should've ran faster and to the side.

Didn't he watch Prometheus?

Good fucking grief! I would hit her with attempted murder.

EDIT: And a late LOL @ the "Prometheus" reference. I was screaming my head off at that scene.

If you're going to attempt to steal from somebody then you need to be prepared to face the consequences. Without knowing his backstory and reason for stealing I can't say I feel bad for him. Stealing from a pregnant woman? Good on her for showing some fight.

She didn't do the right thing sure, but I think it's dumb there's the potential that she'll get in worse trouble than the person that robbed her. Though I think there's a chance she might get her punishment lessened with the workings that people are often pumped up full of adrenaline after robbed, and increased aggressiveness and irritation can be a symptom of pregnancy. Pregnant with increased aggressiveness + Adrenaline Rush + Someone stealing your purse.

I don't think that'll stop all of it, but I think she may get off easier than some other potential situations.
Why? She could have easily killed him.

Showing some fight? She used her car as a weapon in a busy Wal-Mart parking lot in the middle of the day.

The lady did try and based on her rage, she would have probably whopped his ass if she caught up with him on foot.

"Me being five months pregnant, I chased a little ways then come back, jumped in the car, threw it in gear and come across the curb and ran him over. I was not going to let him get away with it,” she told WLOS.

I would never piss off a woman , especially a pregnant one. I've seen some with a rage that is scarier than an angry pit bull.

Seriously, you cant kill or main people who steal from you.

There's no justifying her actions.

It depends on the state. It really will vary state to state, some have laws that basically say you are allowed to use deadly force if the land or property cannot be protected by any other means, or the use of force other than deadly to recover your property would expose you to substantial risk of death or injury.

You could argue that someone fleeing with your property means you cannot recover your property without chasing them in a car, especially if you are disabled, pregnant, etc. Many states won't really allow it, some of the western states will.

Holy fuck. Thread title undersells this immensely. I thought she ran after him, not fucking drive his ass over with a huge fucking SUV.

In this thread, some people thinking it's alright to try and kill robbers or get a lighter sentence because you were robbed justifies trying to kill them with a car.

Yeah why should attempted murder be judged worse than robbery :/

That she's pregnant probably means she'll get very little punishment, unfortunately for her (but fortunately for the child). Shitty situation.

Hope she DOES get in more trouble than him. Potentially killing someone is worse than robbery. Fuck this vigilante bullshit. Your fucking purse is not worth more than a man's life!

Pregnant with increased aggressiveness + Adrenaline Rush + Someone stealing your purse combo might certainly lesser her, especially as the victim initially and not just running some random guy over.

She literally took actions that could have ended someone's life.

The robber performing a snatch-and-grab on a vulnerable pregnant woman is, no doubt, a piece of shit human being. In response, she recklessly endangered his life by using a vehicle as a deadly weapon in an act of vigilantism. Didn't call the cops, didn't yell for help, turned her vehicle on and ran him down.

Her offense IS worse than his offense and is deserving of harsher punishment. To stop a criminal, she became a criminal herself.

Two main reasons, if I'm being honest:

-I don't think her intent was to kill, what I would guess happened is anger got to her head, mixed with adrenaline and increased irritation/anger that can come with pregnancy, and her idea was more "I'm pregnant and can't catch him by foot," and made a stupid call in the moment. Everything about the situation screams clouded anger to me.

-I'm not very empathetic towards people trying to take advantage of others, especially in a criminal way. Obviously I don't want him to die and I'm not wishing it upon him, but I can honestly say I wouldn't feel any sort of pity if he did die while trying to steal a pregnant woman's purse. That has more to do with me though and of course I know that's not the best position to have, but it's honestly how I feel.

I don't know the rules, but if she'd had a gun in her purse and shot him would that have been ok, or can you only shoot folk burgling your house?

Or is it just one of Phil's balls in my throat?
Those users who are agreeing with the woman's methods, will you guys also be for, or against, cutting thieves' hands off ?

Gravity is a myth, the Earth SUCKS!
She tried to murder him.

Edit: also, she could've hurt someone else in the process. I get that she was pissed, but it was just a purse. She should've called the police and gone about her day.

I think she tried to get her purse back, I just don't think she gave a fuck whether he died or not. No way to know for sure what exactly her aim was. I'm sure she wasn't thinking rationally at least. On a another note, "just a purse" may not be accurate. A purse is a container and as such can contain any number of deeply personal and irreplaceable things not to mention financial concerns. And yes, she could and should of just filed a report and let it be at that.

I don't know the rules, but if she'd had a gun in her purse and shot him would that have been ok, or can you only shoot folk burgling your house?

I think the general rule of thumb is that you can only legally shoot at someone when your life is seemingly in danger. So if someone is running away from you unarmed you would have no justification to shoot.

Oh, yeah, he knew he was stealing from a pregnant woman. Right.

You don't have to feel sympathy for the thief to think he shouldn't have been run over by an SUV. She needs to have her license revoked if she can't control her anger while operating a vehicle.

“Not saying what she did was right, according to the letter of the law, but when you decide to commit a crime against another person, you do assume a certain amount of risk that that person may be crazier than you, and, as in this case, run you over with a red-orange SUV...He played a stupid game and they both won a stupid prize,”

Doesn't matter what her intent was. All that matters is she acted recklessly and she used her vehicle as a weapon. A weapon that could have been deadly, not just for the robber but for bystanders as well. Assault with a deadly weapon charges are completely justified. She's lucky, especially with that video out there (she didn't even slow down before ramming him, FFS) that they didn't hit her with attempted manslaughter.

I'm not empathetic for a robber either, but there's an issue of proportional response. Her response was anything but proportional. And as much as I dislike robbers like this particular douchebag, I cannot abide by vigilantism because this notion of "I can take the law into my own hands and get away with it" is endemic across America and should NOT be tolerated.

If he just grabbed it an ran? Probably not okay. Probably would be okay if he threatened her.

I'm no criminal justice lawyer though.

Where was the state that passed the law that accidentally was changed in such a way as to allow pregnant women to legally murder people again?

In either case, she went waaaay overboard.

Real dumb move ... like really.

Don't mess with a pregnant lady.

What she did was dumb though, she'll end up another locked up mother with that logic.

It's a bitch having to cancel all your cards if your wallet gets stolen.

Ok yeah she really fucked up.

God damn she must have been blinded with rage to pull something so fucking reckless.

"Pregnancy Brain" is real.

one crime is theft, the other is attempted murder

didn't something similar happen not too long ago where the thief lost his arm?

So what would be the appropriate reaction to watching someone steal your stuff? (Not saying running him over is ok)
