PS5 is bigger so it will stay cooler, Special Editions Teased by Sony

A PlayStation vice president confirms that there will be several PS5 special editions when the console launches later this year. Sony has officially confirmed two version of the console, with one of these being the PS5 Digital Edition, but it seems that fans will have much more than that to choose from.
In a series of now-deleted comments on LinkedIn, PlayStation vice president of UX design, Matt MacLaurin, said that while the white version of the PS5 is the "flagship" mode, fans can "count on even more beautiful (and hopefully radical) special editions." MacLaurin also confirmed that there the "customization with special editions will be beyond anything seen before."

There also seems to be a huge amount of support for PS5 special editions based on some of the exclusive games confirmed for the console at the PS5 reveal event. While an artist created an amazing Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales PS5 design after the console was revealed last week, MacLaurin himself would like to see a Horizon: Forbidden West edition PS5. "I’m sure there will be a special edition for everyone, I’m hoping for a Horizon Forbidden West special edition," he wrote.

One commenter asked why PS5 needed to be "bigger and bulkier" than PS4. "Thermals," MacLaurin answered. "This gen is little supercomputers. While the 7nm process delivers amazing heat performance for the power, the power is very extreme."

MacLaurin's comments about "the 7nm process" refers to the ever-shrinking semiconductor technology that allows tech companies to fit higher performing components into the same amount of space. The other half of the equation is making sure those new components don't overheat. If your PS4 has ever started to sound like a bayou airboat, you know that ventilation has been a problem for Sony's current generation.

Aside from being a big fella, PS5 also has a distinct look about it. MacLaurin was willing to share some thoughts about that too in response to commenters.

"I understand it's not for everyone, but no good art is," Maclaurin said. "Still, I think it's refined enough to tuck away quietly. The editions are going to be lit."

Oh man lol, I thought there would be pics of special editions.

Wonder if the Blue LED lights can change or if they change them out in special editions. Id take a black and red Spiderman one with red LEDs.

Will be interesting to see how the special edition consoles will look. From my opinion, I feel like the Series X might have the more unique editions, because it’s easier to work with compare to the PS5 design, so it will be interesting to see if any of these PS5 special editions will sport something radical.

This is definitely better than:
"for those who want an offline experience we have the 360" (or something along those lines) -- Don Mattrick

or the usual SJW
"if my game/movie/book/music is not for you it's because you are toxic/racist/feminist/*ist" -- NPC

That is not how it works. If something requires much bigger cooling unit it means it is hotter not cooler.
And we know that higher clocked gpu runs hotter than bigger lower clocked gpu.

They made it big because that was cost of increasing GPU to its limits and going crazy with thermals to get probably price of console down.

BOLD PARTS MY HIGHLIGHT ABOVE^

Calling it now. These "editions" will actually light up both sides of the console with whatever branding is for the game along with the controller. Here's a rough example of
what I mean:

If the PS5 is whisper quiet then the size will be worth it IMO.

The Big=Bad dogma has always existed for consoles and I don't really agree with it. No console has ever been so big that it mattered IMO. My PC is larger than any console has ever been and I have room to display it proudly.

I thought it was suppose to have an exotic cooling system to cool better?

It's not supposed to have overclocked weaker components making so much heat "and" be Frickin' huge as well.
It’s why I am surprised how everything is similar to 2013. Weaker console bigger system for concerns of cooling. 2020 XSX more powerful system smaller footprint. expected to have quiet cooling.

Yes, Mr. Gaf Member #127463, tell me how you know better than actual console architectural designers that have built the console over the course of 5 years with specific R&D techniques.

Please, go on and tell me more through your expertise.

Well how come XSX doesn't need to be that size even with nearly a 2tf advantage?
Well, Microsoft didn't need to overclock the GPU above PCs with water-coolers to overcome the computational limitations imposed by having the same CU count as the PS4. There's no doubt that Cerny and crew know their stuff, but if the console isn't whisper quiet under load, I'd say they backed the wrong horse in comparison to Microsoft's engineers. Time will tell.

If there is a limites special editon thats rad i will buy that just as a collectors item.
Then i buy the standard edition to use.

People always say why not both well in my case they will be both ps5's

Bigger and with better cooling == more heat transferred per second == easier to keep a lower temperature == cooler

In theory, bigger case, means bigger fan, means lower RPMs, means less noise. In theory, of course. That said, we're talking about few inches, give or take. Size didn't doom the first Xbox, and it didn't doom the PS3. It's a weird talking point.
