Phil Spencer: XGS titles for the “next couple of years” will be cross-gen

I guess we already knew this to some degree. I still think it is sad, because I love generational jumps, but we don't know how the Xbox game lineup is going to look in the next couple of years (whatever that means exactly). Maybe they are saving up the big guns for after that 2-3 year transitional period and then come out blazing?

Lets hope this thread doesn't turn into people still believing and quoting that the Series X won't be hold back by this, because the difference between the Xbox One and Series X is just too big to still be naive about it.

Pretty much. Yet you’ll still find some batshit crazy fanboys defending this.

Mid gen refreshes happen 2 years after console releases...what? You guys on here just make stuff up as you go. Their box art clearly states which games are XSX enhanced so what are you saying. This is only an issue for system war troll heads. I actually believe this strategy is going to help Microsoft in the long run.

'Will be getting closer' is different to 'will happen'. It will help them be able to sell software they otherwise didn't have the install base to sell to. It doesn't help the games though.

I wonder if they are trying to temper expectations. Was it Greenberg on Twitter that just said he saw some "wild expectations" or something similar? Yeah right here.

That to me says there are people expecting more than we are going to get, but I haven't personally seen anything outrageous. What are we all expecting? A decent list of good games? I hope that's not "wild."

I'm more and more curious about this event next week.

I've got a hunch that what they'll show will be really impressive, but I just don't understand how they're going to push the Series X AND service the base Xbox One.

It doesn't seem possible.

Personally I'm really against the strategy. We've waited 7 years for a new generation. I want the games to look as good as possible, as soon as possible.

So, as someone who’s definitely getting a Ps5 to play their exclusives and third party games... there’s no point me buying a Series X then? I don’t particularly want to just play current gen games that have a few more bells and whistles slapped on them.

There‘s no way in hell games won’t be massively held back by having to be on vanilla XBox One as well.

He’s referring to acquisitions and hardware reveals. It’s right there in the tweet you posted.

A Halo Infinite made exclusively for XSX versus one made to work with all consoles in mind would have been extremely different games. If you don't believe so then I really don't know what to say.

I know the XSX will be the best version but it'll always be viewed as being held back because that's factual.

So basically every XSX game from their studios will be an upgraded XB1 game. Nothing designed around the strengths of the XSX for at least 2 years. By that time, mid gen refreshes will be getting closer.

It will be the other way around. Xbox One versions will look so horrific, users will have to upgrade....and you won't see those versions running until they are on store shelves due to how utterly shit they look.

I'm hype for the everything they are doing except this stance, it seems weirdly stubborn like they want to prove that generations are some arbitrary outdated thing when that just isnt the case

Every player in this industry accept and flourish under the "hard reset" mode that videogames have always gone on

Hope it's just talk honestly to ease the crossgen process

You guys really think they went out to create the most powerful console and won't work to get the most out of it? Let's wait until the 23rd and see how these games look before we make assumptions.

Yes, GAMERS benefit the most from this. Do you think Billy from Rhode Island cares about Halo running at 120/4k? No, he just wants to be able to play.

I haven't seen "wild expectations" around acquisitions and hardware reveals. Everyone knows Lockhart is rumored for August. And what other places do people think MS is going to buy right now? Maybe I haven't been paying enough attention or something.

He didn't explicitly say it so that's an inferred meaning really. I still thought it was an odd tweet. That combined with Spencer constantly ramming home the "new games work on Xbox One" just doesn't feel right.

"Please be excited for our new very powerful system that you don't need to play games that are compatible with 2013 hardware that wasn't very popular!"

I mean.. didn't that other dude say the same in January?

I'm curious how this will pan out for them, but would prefer they didn't do it this way.

I think they've been pretty clear that they want to build a platform across devices and PC, and not just focus on consoles any longer. Which is great for me, I have Game Pass for something like another 14 months. But I don't know how this will work out for Microsoft in the end. I wish them the best. A Sony without meaningful competition seems to have turned out bad for consumers in the past at times.

Lmao. You won't even notice any game looking next generation on any console for the next few years anyway, but since this is Microsoft it's bad, if this was Sony you'd be all over it claiming how MS is anti-customer.

No. It would be a bad move by Sony as well. “We’re not making any exclusive Ps5 games“ would sound just as bad.

The same with pc gpu models...why someone have to upgrade the pc if can play the same game at 720p 30fps and medium setting...

Fair enough. But I’m a console gamer predominantly. If a new console is coming out, I want to know it plays games nothing else does to justify the purchase.

I see people saying we've known this except I was pretty harshly admonished in other threads for suggesting it'd be more than one year, the faithful have told me over and over it will just be 1 year. So, this is news to someone.

All the concern trolling in like 87 different threads on here over this. I think i wont stop laughing all night if the 'held back by XB1' games Microsoft show actually look better then the 'next gen only' games sony showed. And its hardly outside the realms of possibility of that happening after the show Sony had.

I get why people make the PC analogy when talking about this topic, but do you honestly think PC games wouldn't be 1000 times better if devs could focus their efforts on developing for hardware released only in the last 2 years rather than supporting 15 years of legacy hardware? If you say no to this I'm calling you a liar.

I don't get the point really. Especially since even MS has to see Xbone as a failure. Why not forget that as soon as possible and move on.

Not sure if serious, the exclusive games on PS4 at launch like Shadow Fall looked far better than the cross-gen games. You want a perfect example of what cross-gen games do for you look at Dark Souls ll (one of my favorite games). If Sony were doing this I'd also be "concern trolling" because I hate when games are cross-gen, cross-gen is why Watch_Dogs turned out how it did, for "parity" we know for a fact cross-gen has held back games that were famously downgraded. I'm also not sure what I am to make of people deriding Sony's show, like you didn't see that Horizon Zero Dawn 2 trailer? The new Ratchet and Clank? Really?

Damn.

Microsoft can't when when they are anti-consumer and they cant win when the are pro-consumer.

Thats fine. Me? I'm just gonna enjoy next gen by playing great games (yep) on the most powerful console while also experiencing the greatest console services on offer (Live, Xcloud, GamePass).

Yeah I suspect we're gonna see sub 720p on a lot of base One versions.

I suppose ultimately if you can get Doom Eternal running on the Switch Series X games should be able to run in some form on the Xbone. They're just gonna look a mess.

This post reads to me like "no matter what Microsoft does someone will complain, why can't they be universally praised by everyone for a decision?" Which is just absurd on its face.

2 games, 2 games out of what?, 27 shown?. Those 2 games always come up in defence if anyone dares say they werent impressed with Sony's show. Thing is, a lot werent impressed, even some Sony fans if you go back and read through the thread. There is a reason why most of the radicals were going in every thread they could to proclaim a '10/10' for Sony's show when a lot of dissapointment was being talked about.
