Animal Crossing wins TGS game of the year

One of the most restrictive world building games out there, with a very dull loop that has no variation in tasks.

Also ONE WORLD PER MACHINE, is the worst most awful shit Nintendo has pulled, if you have a second account on the SAME SWITCH you're severely limited to playing on the primary account's island and you can't even modify very much there. The only way to start a new island, I guess is if you deleted the primary accounts one.

Perfect gif to use when the game is about nothing

It is Japan, the land where the Switch reigns supreme. Can't really comment on the game as I haven't played it, the one world per console mechanic put me off buying it for now.

No, it's about adults consuming games made for children when they wouldn't do the same for TV, books, etc. Surely you wouldn't spend tens of hours watching a kids TV show such as paw patrol? Games, especially those on Nintendo systems, get a weird pass from adults that tell themselves it's fun to play a game that is designed with a 6 year old as the primary demographic.
Eh. Only a child needs the validation of playing grown-up media to feel like an adult. Those who have grown past their adolescent insecurities can enjoy Harry Potter and Pixar alongside Moby Dick and Gone Girl. And Teletubbies and diaper fetishes? Honestly, who's the child here? XD

PS-I don't see the appeal of AC either, I just don't have to throw a hissy fit over people liking things I don't... except TLJ. That movie is trash.

I wouldn't watch Harry Potter or Pixar unless I was with children that wanted to watch it (family gathering or something).

Same as with games. Sure, I'd take a look at an AC game if my nephew was playing it but choose to play it as my main game, over the many other available games? Nah. Why on earth would I? It's not that good a game and, to be honest, it looks incredibly boring. Even if it was designed with an adult asethitc it still looks so ridiculously boring.

Yes, I guess.

I just think it's completely pathetic and, honestly, I get frustrated at things I just don't understand. I'll never fathom why an adult would spend more than maybe an hour playing Animal crossing and, similarly, I'll never get why some men get their kicks dressing up in nappies.

I wish adults didn't buy this garbage and then Nintendo would fund games that maybe I'll like. So it does impact me in some respect.

Then your problem is you, not the game nor people who don't share your opinion.

I'm an adult, I enjoyed it and still enjoy it. It's a very chill experience that's incredibly easy to relax with and offers a no drama, feel-good escape from the shit going on in the world that the usual angst and drama driven games simply can't provide.

You don't need to understand it. You just need to accept that your personal tastes and opinions are not absolute truths... and that's okay.

Quick question to some of you in here, which game did you think was going to win this Japanese show GoTY? Like c'mon.

I don't care what genre I play but I do care that I'm spending my time with something that engages me either intellectually, physically or emotionally. Something that pushes and challenges me, not just press 'a' to watch a cartoon man pick up a flower or whatever... For thirty hours. Man, I'd feel my brain just dribbling out of my ear doing that.

So, stick to your boring cartoons for children. I'll play something designed for adults that is engaging and challenging thanks.

Ps. I don't care much about framerates.
Why do you quoted me? I think this stuff is the most boring shit ever :ROFLMAO:

Animal Crossing was fun as hell during Quarantine. I even bought my wife and MIL Switches so we could all play together during it.

It's a simple, relaxing, casual game meant to be played in short bursts. Let people enjoy things.

What kind of entitled ignorant shit is this? Get off your high horse dude.

Entitled? How am I entitled? I dunno what a MIL is btw.

Enjoying this with you child makes sense and i can respect that. I can't respect choosing to play this over all other available games, as a single player who is an adult. It's just bizarre.

You know what I honestly think - Nintendo gamers have to play whatever is released due to the lack of games this year and they do so and tell themselves that they enjoy it. Tell yourself something enough and you'll start to believe it.

There is no type of salt more special than what comes from people who don't "get" Animal Crossing.

They don't have to get it either - that's fine - but fuck it's funny watching them complain about it.

So true, that sodium influx is gloriously tasty. Think it's this brand they are savouring.

Why are people so surprised? This game was a phenomenon. There was like a two month period where it seemed everyone was playing and talking about this game daily. It’ll almost certainly make my personal top 5.

Of course, it must be mass-scale Stockholm Syndrome! Clearly this is the simplest explanation compared to this being a good video game that people enjoy.

I've been there. It used to be me.

I then decided to actually look into other aspects of my hobby and spend some money on it and I now regret the hours I forced myself to play drivel such as this.

I remember when EGM Magazine brought a famous ex criminal from the Italian Mafia to give his thoughts about GTA, The Getaway, True Crime and, just for fun, Animal Crossing.

He couldn't play very well, he was an old man after all. He found the Mafia games complicated and kind of lame. When he started playing Animal Crossing, he had a really good time! He found very strange the animals, he commented he couldn't know the sex of the characters but loved the colors and how you could pick insects, etc.

His gamer grandson, who were participating in the interview, started making fun of him. He scold his grandson and explained that his childhood was about tossing molotovs in buildings with people inside but Animal Crossing felt like real childhood and he would buy it to play. And disinherited his grandson.

Forgive the assumption, but that sounds like hardcore fanboy behavior taken to an extreme. The number of people so devoted to their platform that they'll force themselves to play something they aren't enjoying (and lie about it) is statistically insignificant, I would wager.

A quick Google search could've answered that question for you, big guy. It's Mother in Law.

So in your eyes, Nintendo should only fund games that maybe you'll like? You see the entitlement there? What a crock of shit. The game is far from garbage. Have you played it?

You sound like a gatekeeping fool. Just because the game isn't your cup of tea doesn't make it garbage. You're even saying it "impacts" you. That's hilariously rich.

No, it was basically because I didn't have the time or money to play multiple consoles and I didn't want to miss the latest Zelda and Mario having played them my entire life. Thus I stuck with Nintendo through thin and thin.

Finally, this year, I noticed that all my recent switch games were pc ports and i just thought 'what am I doing?' I can afford a PC now, why wait for the ports? I also noticed that all recent main Nintendo releases didn't interest me much at all (Luigi, Pokémon, AC).

Another GotY/list, another tantrum by many members.

I don't understand the mindset, personally. I don't think it gets more trash than TLoU2's story, tone, and characters, but when it won that GotY, I saw the thread, shrugged, and scrolled by.

I have no desire to control or whine about what other people's favorite game is, in such a large field, with so many tastes.

When it's time, go publish your own GotY or list, if it bothers you so much.

I see. Still, I don't think this kind of thing applies to enough people to explain the game's popularity or it receiving a GOTY award. It also doesn't explain the fans the series has gathered since it began almost 20 years ago.

It's not my game of the year either, although I did enjoy many hours with it so it's easy to see why it would get an award. Again, the explanation is simple: It's a great game that you don't like. It's not that deep.

Holy cow, GAF really hates Animal Crossing.

It's not for me but I don't want anyone to die in a fire over it. Games like this normalize gaming for kids, women, grandparents, and even some straight white men.

It definitely gets more people into gaming and it's a good thing that it is popular.

It's one of the most relaxing/peaceful game series of all time. The hate for it here is just mind-bogglingly funny to me. That's Gaf though I guess. Hating on anything that isn't a JRPG, Souls, or PS exclusive.

I didn't know so many people hate Animal Crossing. Guess I'm not one of the cool kids. It's a fun relaxing game that is a nice break between the game types we played a million times. Is this what happens when your favorite game is not picked as game of the year? Don't worry, your game is still good even though an event didn't pick your game.

Congratz Nintendo Bros.
While it's not necessarily my kind of game, it appears that over 22 million people have enjoyed the hell out this game and that's a wonderful thing for people to have a lighthearted and joyful diversion in these depressing times of WuFlu and nonstop riots.

Is 13 Sentinels really that good
Yeah, it’s really that good. In fact this might piss off some people but Druckmann should take note from this game how to write proper story with multiple main characters, George Kamitani was able to pull off masterfully with 13 characters.

By the way, I couldn't care less about game awards or what wins. I don't even have a favourite game I'd like to win this year really. It doesn't interest me at all.

Also note that I used "couldn't care less" and not "could care less". Saying the latter is beyond stupid.

Damn there is a lot of hate in this thread for Animal Crossing. What's the deal? It seems like an innocuous non-divisive game that makes millions of people happy, why so much hate?
