Pretty obvious.

XSX has great back compat, power, value, and potential. These are good enough reasons to pick one up at launch and feel good about your purchase. And when those exclusive games start rolling in it's gonna be great!

That said, gamers want next gen exclusives now. Not Mid 21'-late 21'. Spin it any way you want but Microsoft not having launch exclusives to show off the power of the system is a huge fuck up.

This is the reason the PS5 will be the better system to own next week. It has nothing to do with more or less power or special rumble controllers or storage space, any of that crap.

Cool article. I don’t find it objectionable, as it simply summed up what I felt from the reviewers in my own perusal.

As I said above, and many times before (often taking heat for it, until it was an ‘accepted’ critic opinion) Series X needs showpieces, and new ones at that. I feel this is the primary issue. Nobody sane thinks the hardware is anything less than stellar, but Microsoft has often struggled with demonstrating this throughout the year.

Once the recent Watch Dogs RT preview dropped, the whole tone around the Series X noticeably shifted for the better. If other multiplatform games put in such a good showing, things could arguably be on the way to turning around.

Apologies for constant snippets. I’m still reading, and all of this packed into a single post would be a chore to view.

I wasn’t aware the feature was quite this cool. That is absolutely awesome. You get the choice whether you want to jump straight to the fun (or for some of us, the completionism), or just launch the game proper, and soak the whole, immersive Spider-Man experience in.
Yeah, cleanup on trophies can be such a chore.. this really cuts through all the nonsense. Hope it works as well for all other games.

Both consoles have their strengths.

PS5 has an incredible controller, a faster (when optimised for it) SSD, a digital edition which doesn't compromise on specs and a pretty great game bundled to showcase the upgrade in Astro's Playroom.

Xbox Series X has Game Pass, supports a wider BC library and offers multiple improvements to older titles like auto-HDR, 16x AF and framerate doubling alongside being a more powerful machine.

That GI decided to wax lyrical about one list of benefits and not mention the other at all is disappointing.
Unlike with PS4/Xbox One or PS3/Xbox 360 launches, reviews have been positive for both consoles and it's looking like a strong generation for everyone. That should be celebrated.

I think DF said that BC games on the PS5 are moved into HDR colorspace- this would be "auto HDR" if Im not wrong, so it seems to do something similar.

Cool article.

I find it extremely funny to see an article literally made by nothing else than copying a few other articles defined as "cool." 😂

Guess certain outlets have a very low standard of what journalism is, and the same can be said of some readers.

One thing I find facinating with fanboys is how quick they will change their tastes to suit their narrative.

Take gamepass for example people argue about their quantity of games but when you mention that Psnow has more games then it's about quality.
When you mention about the quality games that sony puts out regularly suddenly it's about being there day one.
When you mention that no exclusive is coming in the next months then it's about value (which I don't deny is great we can all agree on that).
But when you mention psnow is cheaper then it suddenly becomes it's all ps3 games.
But when almost everything that MS talk about is backward compatibility then legacy becomes great.

Cross gen games are another good example where they were judged as bad, then Horizon and Spiderman MM were revealed as crossgen then suddenly it's a good thing for those that were against it and a bad thing for those that were for it.

When in fact there's only 2 undisputable arguments about why you choose one over the other.
1-I like their exclusive more than the other.
2- I'm too attached/invested to their brand/ecosystem.

All the talk around are just ways to validate a choice that has already been made.

And honestly there's no point to argue with someone that says I like whatever console library more.

I for example have no interests in the Switch library as of now but I understand that people like it.And it is objectively impossible to argue about the tastes of people simply because they are personal.
Except for any movie with danny mcbride in it then you have bad taste (sorry TBiddy TBiddy I had to make that joke).

And honestly if it really was about a few hundreds pixels more then we would all just buy PCs.
So just let people be happy with their choices and don't feel obligated to justify yours.
Congrats for those that will play on the next Xboxs and congrats on those that will play on the next playstations and congrats to those that haven't already bought a switch and plan to buy one soon, even those that only play on mobile.

We are already being treated as dangerous in a lot of medias let's not add oil to the fire.

Maybe we can all agree on one thing, as gamers, that the save icon should remain as a floppy disk.

Well, I’m not permanently upset in every thread I enter.

It was a nice summary of the critical zeitgeist, matching my own observations, and pointing me towards some cool reviews and facts I wasn’t aware of.

I guess I’m sorry if that upsets you. Again, for the umpteenth time. I’m not a big fan of the media either, but I certainly don’t obsess about it to this level.

Ya'll, I have an XsX on order right now, but not a PS5, and I agree with what the article is saying.

The article is not stating the PS5 is more powerful. It is not stating that the XsX is a bad console. It is just stating what everyone knows: at launch, the PS5 is offering the most next gen experience. With the new controller and actual next-gen games published by Sony at launch, it is delivering a more next-gen experience.

I am getting a XsX at launch due to many of the current games I play benefiting on it day one. Example: I have yet to play through Gears 5, so I am looking forward to playing it with the new enhancements.

I rarely find launch lineups appealing, but this lineup is weak for both consoles, but especially for XsX. But I know the new games will come. I am getting a PS5 when Horizon comes out.

MS' decision to keep the UI more of the same and give the controller only minor tweaks (while maintaining forward and backward compatibility with older controllers) is a blessing and a curse. The positive is less money needs to be spent and it is an interface we are familiar with. The apps from the previous consoles seem to be all compatible with the new OS as well. Downside? It doesn't have that new "feel". Sure it is quicker and cleaner, but there is no discovery of something new.

The title of the article is click baity IMO because it is really easy to make conclusions from it that the article really isn't saying. Console warriors, calm your tits, be honest about what is coming out, and just enjoy gaming.

So it was there all along. The Dual Sense had the hidden GPU in it the whole time! A master stroke from Sony.

In all seriousness, it was brilliant on Sony's part to spin off DLC as a standalone technical showcase for PS5 as well as a remake of a PS3 game. These titles didn't need a full dev cycle so they were ready for launch and they were received well.

Halo Infinite was supposed to be there for Series X|S but I'm glad it got delayed. Hopefully it looks the part the next time we see it.

Nah, not upset. Amused, yes. Slightly bitterly I guess, as outlets like Gamesindustry have been pretty literally throwing this job into the cesspit with their continuous focus on no-effort clickbait like this and partisan politics (separately or combined). Guess can't expect any better, but they never fail to fall in line with expectations every weekend.

Series X has
More power
More storage space
VRR
1440p support
Archiving next gen games on external drive
Auto HDR for BC games
Quick resume
Gamepass
Significantly improved load times for BC games (better than PS5)

Yet I'm still more excited to buy a PS5 over a Series X. I hope Sony patch the some of the stuff Series X has such as VRR, archiving games to external drives, quick resume in the first 6 months atleast. But the reason I prefer PS5 over Series X is because of the first party lineup in the first year in comparison to Series X. I also am more excited about the controller even though it's most likely gimmicky. Also like activity cards taking you straight into a certain point in a game instantly.
I agree. Sony is coming out of the gate terrible in comparison to Xbox, but I'm still going with PS5 for now. A couple more things, apparently ALLM may not be a thing on PS5 at launch either. Digital Foundry said they had to manually set their TV to game mode even though it supports ALLM...so who knows.

ALSO, apparently you have to have a PS+ sub to transfer save files from one console to another. You can't even put a PS5 save file onto USB, it has to be in the cloud. Such a joke.

And I don't know about Xbox, but PS5 has no Plex, Hulu, and more at launch.

Let me help everyone who is freaking out about this:

THIS IS NOT ABOUT THE POWER OF THE CONSOLES, BUT WHAT THEY ARE DELIVERING AT LAUNCH.

yeah, it is a shitty title to the article, but it is really saying on day one: PS5 is delivering a next gen experience due to their controller, updated OS, and launch games. Due to lack of exclusives at launch, pretty much the same controller, and same OS layout, Xbox Series X is really a showcase for Next Gen.. yet.

- signed, someone who has a XsX on pre-order and not a PS5 (waiting until Horizon)

I think DF said that BC games on the PS5 are moved into HDR colorspace- this would be "auto HDR" if Im not wrong, so it seems to do something similar.

However, it does lack the refinement and the thorough testing of Microsoft's solution. There's no real alternative to Xbox's innovative Auto HDR technology, and neither is 16x anisotropic filtering forced on in compatible titles in the way it is on the Series consoles.

That's from Richard, and John basically said the same on Twitter - which I can't be bothered scrolling through swathes of tweets crying about Twitter to find.

I do think this is one niche Xbox has, but, as I stated, PlayStation have plenty of their own. This is an exciting time to be a gamer, I wish more would focus on that rather than constantly sniping from the sidelines.

So.

Upset.

Let it go. I don’t know what happened, if you applied to IGN, and Tal ran behind you and pulled your pants down while the entire office laughed at you and your writing sample, but it comes off incredibly embittered and obnoxious.

The laugh emotes especially read as this:

It isn’t as if you aren’t entitled to your opinion. And certainly, we all get angry from time to time. But I’ve noticed such a constant throughline of negativity and misery from your posts.

Have more fun. Bitch less. It does wonders for you and everyone around you.

He is lying about DF not being biased towards PS since well even? Even the 2013 comparisons were pro Xbox.

And now he things that suddenly changed? lol

DF getting nasty responses does not mean things “switched”- that’s just the nature of the fanatical theatrics of the internet beast.

Let’s move on from this conversation and discuss the content of the video, and not the twitter meta drama.

What makes you so optimistic it will have even one big first party exclusive by mid - late 2021?
As long as Xbox fans are so happy congratulating MS for playing older games they have no reason to put more effort. At best they will release one-two small games to fill Gamepass. I'd bet that is their priority right now.

He's totally full of shit, they thrive on all of it, and they play up emotions that they're people with feelings to get another select group of people to feel bad for them and defend them.

Their entire business is built from inciting controversy and then crying about the result of it.

So it's easier to believe they have an elaborate plan set in place where they take daily abuse in order to garner more views or whatever, over believing that "gamers" are arguably the worst group of hobbyists in the world and all the nonsense that comes with that?

There is no excuse, these things are planned years in advance and they can’t say they haven’t had the heads up over first party a Halo delay or not.

What bemuses me is the majority of what I’m reading is older games playing better or looking better, that should be used as a layer of many in appealing to buyers not the majority of the discussion! I browse the threads and I expect tweets and talk about the likes Discs of Tron and Sonic CD on XSX at the rate it’s going.

I really hope they show off something new and boss at the VGAs, that’s gameplay.

Incidentally, not sure what IGN has to do with it. 😂

Once upon a time, people bought empty boxes and coupons for Star Wars action figures, at Christmas.

Xbox will survive having no big new games at launch. Especially if they drop another big acquisition on us.

They're right though?, the PS5 is the only next-gen console with a proper AAA next-gen exclusive game at launch and 2021 is gonna be killer. The XBSX is a powerful console... the world's most powerful retro console right now (until the first party next-gen exclusives from Microsoft start hitting in a year or two), in the here and now though?... Microsoft doesn't have any games that they can show and say "here's the world's most powerful console!" because right now Sony has the better looking next-gen exclusives.

I'll enjoy them both. I'm glad EA play will give me another game to play in Jedi Fallen Order on the 10th. I'll download Forza Horizon 4, Gears 5, and Valhalla and try them all via quick resume. On the 12th I'll play Demon's and Spiderman. Off of work this week. Keep fighting fanboys. Your posts are funny. Maybe put that endless energy into something productive like the gym. 😘

No, "gamers" don't care if a game is next gen exclusive or cross gen. COD will still be the highest selling game on the next gen when it comes out, even though it will come out on the current gen too.

I agree with this. I guess, more specifically speaking, it's NEW games that really take advantage of the NEW system that 'gamers' want. Usually these come in the form of exclusives but they can be cross gen or not, doesn't really matter as long as they are NEW and look sufficiently next gen on the respective console.

Microsoft for example would be doing a hell of a lot better with a cross gen Halo Infinite at launch. For now they have nothing NEW to show, and nothing that truly shows off all that power.

I'm quite surprised how many people dislike the look of the PS5.
I think it's quite slick. It would be even better if it was 20% smaller but if the large size keeps it running cool and quiet then so be it.

I like it too and the controller. I also like the monolith style of XSX and it’s nice they’ve had that green hue to the vent, much better than the bland X1 consoles.

It looks too "gamer" for most people I think. That aesthetic got left behind long ago. Plus that size is just shockingly big.

The series X is a laptop upgrade. When you get it you are so excited but after awhile you just do whatever you were doing before with no change at all. Maybe an application will open faster here and there. Yay.

You wonder why Sony fans are so aggressive in attacking people and console warring.

It comes from the top. Sony engages in it as a form of marketing. Just today we have this and the insomniac dev losing it wading right into the console warring.

I expect Phil to post a congrats when the ps5 launches.

Don't pass gaas, it is your Destiny!
Next gen console with 2 gen old bussiness model. While MS looks to the future (game subs, cloud gaming, gaming anywhere), Sony hanging on to that old way of doing things.

Glad the future is in the past.

It's a 50GB game, a crossgen, yet it's the best looking so far with near infinite polygons and zero aliasing at native 4K with insane RT reflections draw distance. This is just the tip of the iceberg.
Flatbricks with glass reflections (RT) = one step forward and one step backward.

I have both arriving next week, seems like the Xbox is more powerful but doesn’t have any games to show it off - ps5 doesn’t have that issue

Anyway the fuller next gen experience will come next year holidays. It is a marathon, not a sprint.
So far everything has gone well for both of them, covid environment helps bigly too. 🤷‍♀️
