What truly triggered this by the way? Did someone just notice how many short sales were coming up due and thought they could mobilize Reddit to really maximize the valuation and keep pushing it up?

Is there any easy way to visualize short sale activity for any given stock? Im still pretty dumb/new about this stuff.

The stock was undervalued, and got shorted heavily while also getting some good news (The Chewy guy) the stock was going to naturally rise a bit, but the shorts made a fight out of it leading to this.

I picked up 100 shares in AMC since it was dirt cheap. I doubt it see even 10% of the rise that GME did, but whatever, it's only a few hundred bucks.

edit: nvm, should probably take this to the stocks/investing thread.

Limit has to be near 1k right? A squeeze Friday a this point will be nuts

Yeah I'm keeping mostly 1K limit sells and many open ended. I already took my cost basis out, only a few still at 420 to book a profit.

If this thing works out it's got to be one of the biggest non-inheritance capital transfers from boomer fund managers to yolo memers ever, maybe don't even need the qualifier.

It’s going to be a crazy situation, a ton of people will have a 1k limit and the shorts will be in a terrible spot. Even the 115$ guys

I really can't think what's the biggest troll. Reddit bankrupting some billionaires or 4chan getting the orange man elected as president.

I shook my head at "meme magic is real" many years ago, but I think I may have been wrong.

Questrade just sent me an email

Long positions margin requirements increased from 75% to 100%

and the margin requirement on short positions will increase from 250.00% to 300.00%.

Wasn't the margin requirement 140% last Friday? Is that true?

Questrade last Friday sent me this

“Effective January 25, 2021, the margin requirement on long positions of symbol GME will increase from 50.00% to 75.00% and the margin requirement on short positions will increase from 50.00% to 75.00%.
We recommend you review your current positions to ensure you are not issued a margin call due to this change.

It is your responsibility to monitor your account and margin, and to deposit enough funds or close enough positions to remain in good standing. Otherwise, we will issue a margin call and we may need to close positions to satisfy the shortage.

We retain the right to require more margin at any time we consider necessary.”

Shorts went from 75% to 300% (i did not even see the 75% to 250%) If other brokers had higher shorts on Friday, you can be sure a similar ratio was applied.

Btw this is total equity vs your position, not an interest rate. If I put 10k for a short, I need 30k in the account just as a safety for it to pass. If I don’t, or if the current shorters do not fill the account to meet this requirement, they can get a margin call. This basically breaks the kneecaps of many many many shorters.

Uh, discord server’s mod said “Welcome Elon”

man Elon said hi, fucking crashed the server. Not sure if it’s the real Elon, but Elon on Twitter said he watched the discord’s chaos.

I'd be very wary of getting on a train at the tail end of a parabolic run, if someone out there is considering it. It'll return to Earth without warning and everyone will sell at the same time, a ton of stop losses will trigger, etc. There won't be time to react.

Not financial advice.

You’re absolutely right. A lot of triggers will happen at 420 for the memes and then 1000. It will drop immensely after a squeeze. It will make a shockwave in all the market probably, spiking/dips in nearly every stocks.

Nobody should be thinking of GME for a long term 400$, maybe it will stabilize at 80~100 long term.

Those who are in, I would suggest setting the triggers with some margin away from the YOLO ones, if 1000$ is often seen, a 900$ trigger would be more conservative.
