The Medium Review Thread

Those people look at the world with blinders and only play industry-approved games, therefore. It's sad honestly.
Exactly. It's honestly one of my biggest gripes with modern gaming.
This a studio Microsoft needs to purchase honestly. Love to see what they could do with a real budget and fully staffed up. They would fill a nice hole in the line up and would be a small studio they could grow into something. They seem to have great ideas just need the budget for execution. I'll be playing it this weekend.
Indeed. Microsoft better not squander it's potential. I don't want it to be like Killer Instinct and how underpromoted it was. Xbox really dropped the ball with that smh.

drops to 900p, 30 fps, on-rails gameplay? Considering the blue-prints of older classics such as Silent Hill etc I'm amazed Bloober couldn't innovate.

Again absolute proof you need the studios/devs to take advantage of those 12 flops and having to scale down to Xss level must really hurt their ability to optimise.

Ah well, this is exactly what gamepass is for...rentals :D

The Medium's dual reality concept, in which you are on the move in two parallel worlds at the same time, is something special: It is impressive and refreshingly different, especially since there are also a few clever links between the two realities. But as is so often the case with the Bloober Team, despite positive approaches, there is a lack of a thrilling plot and a captivating game design: The puzzles are child's play, the fights are boring and the few encounters with the monster are either dull or frustrating. Aside from the well-staged cutscenes, one learns more about the confusing story primarily through an exaggerated number of documents, the redundant search for echoes or the stylistically terrible reconstruction of memories in the style of Everybody's Gone to the Rapture. For me, this gruesome type of narrative is the only real horror that The Medium exudes. Because otherwise the trip is surprisingly tame, keeps playing the same and sometimes dull game elements ("cut skin") and becomes frighteningly tough over long stretches towards the finale. However, I don't want to deny that the game and the chic art design have a certain atmosphere, which is mainly created by the support of the successful soundscape. But anyone who hopes for disturbing and exciting psychological horror in the style of classics such as Silent Hill, Project Zero or Amnesia will be disappointed. The Medium owes its performance in the satisfactory range primarily to its fresh and well-implemented idea of the dual reality concept and the rare moments when good design ideas flash. - 65% Rating
From 4players.de. The best gaming magazine in germany imho.

Solid reviews! 9 from Gamespot surprised me. 8 from IGN, not so much, cause well....it's IGN.

Pre-loaded & ready to go 😃

All reviews aren't created equal. This is why meta critic sucks. If you're not a fan of the genre, you have no business playing it.

I don't care about The Medium, but I'm not a fan of the genre. But what if I reviewed the game anyways? Wouldn't that influence the score?

If you're not a fan of the genre, then your opinion is worthless.

I wonder how much higher the game would have scored if it was a timed PS5 exclusive come to Xbox some time later. I'm guessing at least 10 Metacritic points higher.
It'd probably be lower actually, as the standard there is quite a bit higher.

For example, Hellblade originally was a PS4 exclusive. 81 Metacritic. For Xbox One it has an 88 Metacritic.

Blair Witch as an Xbox One timed exclusive, 67 Metacritic. When it came to PS4, 64 Metacritic.

The standards are just higher because of the overall higher quality of games on PlayStation.

man this is so true. I was reading through old EGMs last week and it was amazing how often good games would get a 6 or 7 or sometimes even in the 5 range from one of the four reviewers but it was still discussed like an average or good game. Nowadays if you get a 6 it’s apparently horrific. Just look at this thread, a small scale AA horror game last I checked has a meta score over 7 but apparently it’s doodoo.

People need to stop giving a shit what reviewers score a game and care more about what they say, and even then, most reviewers are stupid.

Do you know how many indie games that are fantastic rated in the 9 range year in and year out(still being played today) and how many are ever considered for GOTY? Zero.Zero. You can keep your awards, graphs and Cspan market caps.

Not bad but not good either :messenger_tears_of_joy:

This scale brings me to the past where even 6 was fine games, while nowadays it would be considered unplayable LMAO

Worst part is the school grading system has seemingly gone in the opposite direction. A 60's considered passing now. Wish Kid-Me had that kind of perk when he got a 69 (nice) on a test because he didn't show his work the right way.

..Actually, I'm glad it was tougher for me as a kid with grades back in school, otherwise I fear I'd have the "education" of so many of today's generation. That's a scary thought tbh.

I dont see anyone talking this is a full price $45-60 title and spare me the fcking its on GP. A bad title on your service is a good thing? GTFOH.
idk man some people bought Godfall at full price with the next-gen tax on top of it and this one has a higher mc score.
Regardless of some reviews a lot of people will want try it out. Why you so concerned?

What about your own? Do you value that shit? I would have missed out on some amazing games if I relied on someone else's opinion. Their platform and popularity don't make it anymore valid.
I have limited amount of time. Sometimes I miss out on shit but doesn't mean I play ALL games.

Most of the time I've found D to be on-point and in alignment with my opinions, that's the same reason they're well respected around here.

Clearly you're way to bothered and triggered by ONE review. :D

And another horror game where your only defense mechanism is run and hide.
If you approach it knowing that, you might it enjoy it more. I'm sure if you went in playing it thinking. "Oh yeah head-shots" you would come a way hating it. Imagine playing EA UFC like "😩no air combos!"

Making a valid point is triggered? Lol. You should see these people I fight with on Twitter about Eliot Paige😂. Perhaps you work for the site since you defend them so much. 😲M. night shyamalan

higher? what you wanted really to say that it would get 5-10 score less, because PS platform knows what a quality and a good game is, and how they actually look like. can't say the same about xbox. history of their games and their fans opinions on games molded that pretty obviously.

and you think they'd be crazy to price that game at anything above US$30? Yay for developers going broke! /s .....the fact that you don't deem it worth buying speaks miles about the quality of the product, just saying.
Its $44 USD right now -> https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/p/the-medium/9plkr7kmq6x4?activetab=pivot:overviewtab

I am sure the company knew this would be a hard sell at $40 which is why its on game pass day one. Also, just because "I would not buy this game" does not mean "its a low quality game" . I am generally very picky about what games I buy, especially when its over $30 USD.

This game being on Game Pass will help it because some people that play it might like it enough to buy it or invest in the DLC.

Gamesradar - 5/10:

Skill Up - Recommended (via gamepass):

Skill Up's reviewed are amongst the best imo, and he has recommended it, along with Eurogamer. But the 8 hour linear run time and 72 metacritic has put me off it. Maybe I'll get it at the end of the year.

Then the scores would sit between 8-10 on all games.

What gaming media needs is second opinions. I won’t give examples but I’ve played 9/10 games I thought was so bad that I uninstalled them after 30 minutes.
Not all games are for everyone. That’s important to show.

I like Gamereactor, they don’t always have second opinions but it happens and there are always reviews from multiple countries showing that the taste can vary. The Medium got 8,7,9,9 there. It’s a good score.

This is the Days Gone scenario all over again. Ponies came to the defense because "my precious exclusive" only got a 71 on Metacritic.
no it is not. did you read Days Gone reviews? plenty of reviewers did not even finished the game. some just straight up ignored lore and injected their own narrative. a lot of reviews were more about politics than about actual game it self.

trying to put Days Gone in comparison with every bad/mediocre game from m$ shows just how you are clueless and how you and other look like a 🤡

So Sony gets a pass and MS don't. That's all you are really saying with this. Day Gone getting 71 on MC = unfair. The Medium getting 73 on MC = fair. Thanks for clarifying your double standards.

The technical side does seem to be lacking.

Interested to see how this does because it looks more like a Sony game but with less quality. Ultimately it's GamePass fodder, far too short to buy full price even if you're a fan of horror games.

I think that is a good idea to have several opinions per game review. However, the score should definitely come from the person(s) that actually enjoys the genre. Otherwise, you get guys like this reviewing platformer for example, and let's be honest, how much worth is someones take on a platformer if he doesn't even like the genre? Having a second opinion is all fine, but if the second opinion is just someone hating on a game he can't enjoy and it influences the final score in the end then that's kinda unfair.

Metacritic 75 on PC, 72 on XSX. Ouch, another bombed exclusive for Microsoft. Also the 3/10 reviewer didn't say there were any issues with resolution/frame rate. Only that the narrative was not 'good enough' and not enough 'next-gen flair', whatever that means.

well..... one can hope Halo infinite knocks it out of the park with a 90 or above and they give me some incentive to buy a Series X.
