OK.. yeah I noticed that recently; I assumed Amazon bit the bullet and just took the 30% cut.Amazon Prime Video now lets users buy TV shows and movies in the app, seemingly struck special deal with Apple - 9to5Mac
Update: In a statement, Apple told 9to5Mac that it has an “established program for premium subscription video entertainment providers” and...9to5mac.com
Does seem like the only probable outcome here is that Apple win, but this is the US, so hold on to your cowboy hats.
Yeah prime video isn't prime so I was confused. There was definitely a point where Amazon was getting preferential treatment in terms of rates on digital products (prime video) over other competition. This was in exchange for Amazon basically creating a special type of page on Amazon. Apple then expanded that program from one to more companies.
The difference between a physical and software product is something that I don't understand (apart from apple just deciding it) and haven't seen a great justification for aka the uber vs tinder services. I don't think this will be decided ultimately here but in Congress.
They operate in the EU and are bound by their laws as well...The US is the one place a megacorp like Apple could keep their platform this closed. In the EU they'd be forced to open things up, exactly like on PC or even Mac.
Why?Amazon doesn’t have a special deal. Apple allow video platforms that rent or allow movie purchases to bypass their payment platform. So Amazon offers video rentals and movie purchases for individual titles. They can bypass the payment method. Same for YouTube.
It was kinda special at the time (had 3 companies) and currently is upto 130 worldwide but its still a specific list of providers.Amazon doesn’t have a special deal. Apple allow video platforms that rent or allow movie purchases to bypass their payment platform. So Amazon offers video rentals and movie purchases for individual titles. They can bypass the payment method. Same for YouTube.
Probably because Amazon/providers don’t make the movie and have to pay to licence it while epic makes the skirt that you’re purchasing for your character. Why?
Why is video treated different to other digital goods?
It's totally arbitrary and up to Apple's whim. That is the problem.
There is probably no legal argument but a business model decision. If they close Windows, alternatives will spring. Not the same with iOS where no one can make another OS for those devices.I understand that iOS is locked to Apple hardware, but is that the measure to define whether a centralized app store is allowed? That doesn't sound right to me.
If there's a 1 billion users on Windows and 1 billion users on iOS, and for 90% of businesses they can operate on iOS. What is the legal argument that defines that Windows must be open and iOS can be walled off?
What makes it OK for the EU to fine Windows having IE and Windows Media Player pre-installed as anti-competitive, but iOS having Safari, Apple Maps pre-installed is fine?
Isn't that the same thing XCloud, Stadia and GeForce now does? Those apps were rejectedProbably because Amazon/providers don’t make the movie and have to pay to licence
They operate in the EU and are bound by their laws as well...
Apple need to fix this issue. They want every game rated and available seperately. Hopefully they sort it outIsn't that the same thing XCloud, Stadia and GeForce now does? Those apps were rejected
Microsoft is a services company now.Oh boy, i wonder what will MS do to shake both companies for their interest, Epic games seems to be the better evil for MS since they're way smaller than Apple
We'll see; but they aren't going to have their walled garden totally torn down by competing storefronts or any of that jazz. And they’re about to get assblasted
Listened a bit yesterday to bunch of people repeatedly beg for fortnite back on mobile, not sure what to even say.........
As shocking as it is to some people here, there are millions of people who really like the game.
We'll see; but they aren't going to have their walled garden totally torn down by competing storefronts or any of that jazz.
And it continues to not make any sense why consoles get the pass.
Even within the business PC sector, MS excels at server stuff, MS Office, Skype/Teams, what else? Who knows. That's all I see.I'm enjoying all the documentation that has come off this case a lot. I wish I had a way to enter into the business side of things, really interesting stuff.
I'm really curious what Microsoft will say about it. On one side, their store fell flat on PC and their phones never took off but they did try to get into the business so they understand how difficult it is to achieve success there. On the other side, they still have a stake at not letting other stores and alternate payment methods on their own ecosystem. They know this will set a precedent that can bite them in the ass in the future.
My bet is that Microsoft would support Apple in this case and would feel like a slut afterwards.
They are leaders on the OS and Office space and an important player in the Database world.Even within the business PC sector, MS excels at server stuff, MS Office, Skype/Teams, what else? Who knows. That's all I see.
All hardcore database programs, transactions, inventory, demand planning etc.... are all done by other companies like SAP, Oracle, COGNOS, Manugistics , Photoshop, Hyperion etc... I don't think I've ever seen MS software for the user beyond Office and communications.
So just because MS is a giant software company, they can only do so much.
Even one of Epics drunk lawyers will be able to punch a hole in this consoles are not general compute excuses. They used to be specialised when they only ran when a cartridge or disc was inserted but that ship has sailed.Consoles aren't general computing devices. Epic Games is like, a tiny, tiny portion of the issues a closed garden cause when it's most peoples primary computing device.

It's not a specialised piece of hardware as soon as you can prove it does other things. It doesn't need to do everything, like no one is doing word processing and web design on a phone either.
- access the internet (Kinda?)
- browse the world wide web (WWW) (Not really)
- use word processing software (Absolutley not)
- play games (Yes!)
- communicate via email and social media (Nah)
- design and build web pages (Nope)
- store and retrieve data (Nah)
- play videos and music (yes)
Just playing games and music and kinda having a browser doesn't make a console a general computing device. No one can reasonably compare the two
It's not a specialised piece of hardware as soon as you can prove it does other things. It doesn't need to do everything, like no one is doing word processing and web design on a phone either.
It can access the internet and you need to to access the console store to download music and video streaming apps
You can browse the internet, doesn't matter if using the onscreen keyboard is a drag (you could plug a keyboard in though)
You can send messages to people while outside game, you can also voice chat not ingame.
Can stream games, watch videos, listen to music.
If you have a device that you could connect a keyboard to, load a web browser and go to google or ms office online pages and type up a document isn't general computing then you could probably argue a mobile phone isn't general compute device either.
Why not? It's a good one. It's the exact argument Sony should bring up in court. Is this your attempt at a defence?
Because some apps dont pay 30%. Like apple's own apps. or uber eats or takeaway or netflix or spotify
And they’re about to get assblasted
Consoles have always been able to do more than just play games.I've written papers in Docs on my phone. On a dedicated app. With no workaround. It's a computer full stop.
No. Epic is not leaking these documents. They came to court with these sealed documents as they were subpoenaed. The courts fucked up by scanning sealed documents, instead of only exhibits for public record.I just had a thought, will some of these third party companies involved in this potentially sue epic afterwards?
Due to epics emails there has been a lot of stuff leaked, some I could imagine being under NDA, and other stuff.
Well I assume it is epics fault as it is epics emails.
Ah okay, guess we all got lucky with what got leaked then, some of it was genuinely interesting.No. Epic is not leaking these documents. They came to court with these sealed documents as they were subpoenaed. The courts fucked up by scanning sealed documents
Apple can charge whatever they want but they have to charge everyone the same. They can't allow some apps to be free and then allow purchases outside of ther store and the 30% fee but then turn around and make other developers pay 30% on everything and not allow an external store. This is absolutely nuts. If Epic doesn't like Apple's terms or anyone else's for that matter, then they don't have to sell their games on those platforms. This is what happen when you're living in an entitlement society nowadays!
Primarily consumed, and it's not true for all of their rules unfortunately, it feels a bit weird and random; that a digital game is charge differently than a digital video.Yeah prime video isn't prime so I was confused.
I don't see how the difference between physical and digital is really that hard to understand though.. a digital product is something consumed on the iOS device, downloaded to it, etc.
For sure; but.. I was talking about the Amazon Prime app that sells physical goods.. taking a cut of that would be like taking a cut of things sold on the Target app, or the Walmart app.Primarily consumed, and it's not true for all of their rules unfortunately, it feels a bit weird and random; that a digital game is charge differently than a digital video.
Yes and it’s painting a very disturbing reality about three gaming industry. Did any of the Apple documents got leaked?Ah okay, guess we all got lucky with what got leaked then, some of it was genuinely interesting.

New internal emails and presentation documents revealed as part of the Epic vs. Apple show how Apple attempted to convince...9to5mac.com
Oliver questioned whether Apple should take any “punitive measures” in response to Netflix’s planned test to remove IAP support in certain markets. “Do we want to take any punitive measures in response to the test (for examples, pulling all global featuring during the test period)?”
Not the greatest wording
Really? So why are Microsoft, Sony, Google, and Facebook (Oculus) allowed to operate in the EU?The US is the one place a megacorp like Apple could keep their platform this closed. In the EU they'd be forced to open things up, exactly like on PC or even Mac.
Nvidia we can excuse, they have literally no idea why they were even summoned here. They sell video cards and shit. What the fuck do they know about Apple's App Store? The Microsoft expert is alot more competent than Tim Sweeney and the Nvidia one.
