The Ascent |OT| As Above, So Below

Played for 1.5 hrs last night.

Game looks sick as hell on Series S. Honestly never seen a game like it when I got to the hub area.

The movement and aiming doesn't feel flawless. I usually play with zero aim assist in these types of games and land headshots all the time. But with the aim assist on it felt fine. Movement still a tiny bit too slow.

Story seems pretty good, the lore seems pretty deep. I'm super into it. Just need to play more.

I think this studio would be a steal for purchasing immediately.
I'll second this. Aiming is far too sensitive on controller. I have aim assist on high and I still struggle. Don't even get me started on aiming while crouching behind cover. Feels impossible on controller. Need to adjust sensitivity. Haven't looked into that yet. At least it looks amazing on my LG C1 though.:messenger_beaming:

PC GamePass version missing DLSS
PC GamePass version missing difficulty options (yes, Steam has them)
PC GamePass version missing Day 1 patch

Never heard of different versions like that , have the devs explained what is going on?

I am playing on PC and have left it at default DX11 as people have noted issues with DX12.

I can’t get over how awesome the sound is in this game! I’m playing on a hometheater system with a sub and all and holding down the trigger with a riffle and just listening to that phat metallic rattle and the little changes is so so awesome, possibly the best gun noise I’ve ever heard.

I had some issues with ambient noise never turning off that was really annoying though, hopefully it gets patched, already happened three times in about 5 hours.

Are you all playing on PC or Xbox?
I see that it has a higher average meta on PC than Xbox, 75 vs 64. I’ve only played on Xbox so far, is it better on PC or is it just some super harsh review that drags down the avg score on Xbox?

Unfortunately, I think that it's somewhat normal for GP titles. I remember that there was something annoying with Operencia: The Stolen Sun and in a quick google search, I found out that it was fixed in a certain version of the game. The GP version was prior to that one.

Also, recently, while searching for something else, I found out that the Atomicrops GP version is also not up to date.
GP = 1.3.0.f1
Checking the Steam update page, it's missing two updates one update? Not sure.

Not sure, maybe the difference is just the day 1 patch and it isn't updating because the Windows Store is broken as usual.

Soundtrack is very psychedelic.

It has a tendency to drown in ambient noise. So I don't know how you are faring with a home theatre without turning volume really high.

I am using a pair of closed back cans that are great at plumbing out minutest of details.

If I turn up the volume, music is just sick. Super atmospheric.

I *think* this has the best sound design of any game I've played.

I can't think of any other game where the guns feel as impactful. Ratchet and Clank was brilliant, but this feels even better.

Got to play a couple of hours which was fun.

The game can feel hard an overwhelming but if you run away and use cover a bit you get through it, plus no real penalty for dieing so just try again.

Best value in gaming.

Try and think of a reason why this is that doesn't begin with Micro and end with Soft.

Don't pass gaas, it is your Destiny!
Not for me, prob to jaded at this point to enjoy anything not AAA like spider man or Halo unless I’m invested it in like Destiny. It seems well made and looks very nice on the Xbox series x but not doing anything for me.

Enjoy for those that like it.

HOLY SHIT this game is bright! So many lights and raytracing everywhere. I honestly got a headache trying to adjust to all the neon and police lights. I made it through the tutorial and walked around the city a bit but I had to turn it off.

Good twin stick shooter so far though. I downloaded on XSX and my PC just to compare, haven't played on XSX yet though. Do the lights bother anybody else?

Agreed. It’s so incredibly punchy! And how the sound slowly evolves and changes as you empty the mag. I’m just in awe to be honest. Then comes the destruction. Neon Giant has shown what happens when you make the guns the star of the show in a gun heavy action game. I hope other devs are taking notes because The Ascent makes them all look bad now, I mean even Gears 5 is like shooting peas compared to what we have here.

Someone in reddit mentioned the metro gave a 3/10 on xbox side which is why its dragged down.

I just done a bunch of side missions. This is good shit.

It's not immediately obvious but you can shoot and blow up the HP/EN/Money stations for the desired pickups without spending any ingame currency and usually results in a nice way to replenish your resources quickly.

Really loving you aren't limited to blowing up red barrels, certain cars you can blow up for some nice AoE.

Yeah I guess that can happen when there are so few reviews. Why is that btw? Only 15 reviews on Xbox. 26 on PC.

Got a late start but ended up with 3 of us gunning and exploring around but loving the visual and audio immersion. The music is hella good.

Aiming on a XSX and controller is taking some getting used to, could do with some updates but I'm finding running and strafing with both triggers and thumbs + evade more effective than the cover system. Pity as I can see the real merit to the cover design in this game. The RPG level is perfect for us though, lite action RPG.

We are definitely finishing this bad boy. Also the fun of pissing about in coop with your character during dialog/cutscene is too good.

Unreal the level of detail and polish from a small team of 12.

Destructoid has a review in progress that's extremely positive. It's pending a score because he wanted to test co-op.

Just sounds like not a lot of places got advance copies.
Yeah just noticed that som of my favorite outlets had reviews coming shortly.
What a bummer if these early reviews ends up being surprisingly low and the early talk has already painted an image of how the game is.

Just tried the Gamepass version on PC. What’s the deal? Runs smoothly but have major framerate halts that makes it look really bad. And raytracing is grayed out.

Is a compiling problem when the game freeze for a moment to load any new asset that you saw on screen for the first time but then it's perfect after that?!
Yeah, just like Cemu it stutters when compiling shaders for the area you're in, then once they're compiled, it runs perfectly fine. Even Xbox One doesn't do this, it's bizarre.

Running dx11 or 12? Raytracing is only with 12, which runs like poop for me.
Just got it working. Had to restart to swap to dx12. Had to restart again to get raytracing activated.
Runs about the same, smooth between the sudden halts. I’m gonna play on Xbox instead, this isn’t pleasant. Digital wasd controls is not ideal either.

Playing on Series X and it looks great. If you told me Series X version had ray tracing I'd probably believe you. In fact, I just learned the game doesn't even utilize HDR, or has some HDR issues. Either way the lighting is great.

Its not like the game is deep. It's a twin stick shooter. I didn't like the combat. Does it stop being a twin stick shooter after 10-20-30 minutes?
Did you see any combat in the first 10 minutes? I thought the start was kinda slow.
But no it doesn’t stop being a twin stick shooter. The starting area only have one type of enemy though, so it’s not very interesting even if you’re in it for the shooting. Still cool though with lots of explosions and stuff and a boss fight. But the RPG elements come into play more as you play, once you reach the title screen scene and goes into the inner city after maybe an hour it really opens up and you start getting side quests and can start thinking about how to build you character, which skills to focus on etc. Give it another go is my advice, it’s definitely deeper than a regular twin stick shooter. 👍

This isn't even close to ratchet and clank or returnal in how the guns feel.....

Enjoying it so far, only level 6, anyone have any tips? I die a lot.
I go slow, circle the battle field, kinda strafing, shoot the melee enemies first, they can be dangerous if they get close, then just never stand still. And I always use the boom barrels.

I don’t use cover, not yet at least, I just think it makes me slow so fast enemies come too close and bat me to death. Left trigger can be helpful though to shoot over obstacles. I assume that cover will be important later on, the dev spent like 5 minutes explaining how the cover action works. But so far never standing still has been a successful strategy for me.

And choose side missions wisely, I tried to go after a level 25 mission or whatever at level 5. All enemies had red skulls as level indicator. Not a good idea! 😅

I've had the opposite experience, I usually play like you do but i have found that the cover system has helped me. Im still learning all the skills, and general stuff about the gameplay

Oh so Raytracing isn't on the XSX version? Interesting I'm gonna give it a shot right now.

Sheeeesh, one of the late bosses in the early game really gave me a run for the loot.

Learned the hard way, but don't sell all loot, keep some and change for damage types. Makes life easier.

Level 16 now, and even more fun with the new weapons showing up, new mods and augs.

The game being twin shooter was a bit of surprise for me actually, but for someone who hasn't played those too much, it's fully doable to shine.

lol why not? the weapons are super impactful in this game.

The only thing i can think that ratchet does better is enemies loosing piece of armours when you shoot at them, but to counter that, the ascent has way more enviromental destruction, and both returnal and ratchet completely lack good ragdoll and gore and enemies disappear instantly where the ascent has dead bodies that reacts to explosions etc.

I think they are all great in their own way.

Unless are we talking about audio design, i'm really not an audiophile nor an expert so i don't know who is better.

Played this for another 5 hours or so - still love pretty much everything about. Sure, it has a glitch or two (background noises stuck in the loop etc.] and it also crashed once, but the game‘s a blast. The world building is rich, its side quests often delightfully juvenile and as I said before, shooting and exploding shit never gets old. I still can’t figure out if I like Death’s Door better, but they both up there as my GOTY candidates.
