Should I continue with God of War (2018)?

Well the game only really opens up once you get to the snake. You can now explore the world, do side quests etc. I would continue.

But then I adore this game

I recently got a PlayStation to play the exclusives for this gen and last gen. I'm up to God of War (2018). I got to the part just past the giant snake in the lake. I killed an ogre type thing and some mooks, I think I am at the Base of the Mountain area. This game has 94% on Metacritic, I want to like it. The sequel is coming this year (probably). So is there reason to continue with the game when I am not enjoying it that much? Does something compelling happen or the combat improve? Thanks. Some recent games I did and did not enjoy:

Liked:
- Horizon Zero Dawn
- The Last of Us Remastered + DLC
- Ratchet & Clank (2016)
- Uncharted 4

Did not like:
- inFamous Second Son
- MediEvil

You get more options combat wise down the line and the level design opens up a fair bit too. If you don't like the "base" tho it really doesn't change that much. However, max difficulty makes the game something else entirely in NG+ so there's that. Been replaying it on ps5 and its unbelievably good

Just move on if you’re not enjoying it. I bounced off it too. Didn’t like the combat at all.

I thought the combat improved quite a bit as I got further into the game and unlocked more moves, runes and weapons. My favorite game of last gen probably.

Well, if you like this kind of game, sure.
I did the same last year. Bought a used PS4, cleaned it, replaced the heat conduction pads, etc, than bought a pro to did the same (man ... so much dust ...) and replaced the HDD with an SSD. Problem with the cooling in the pro is now, that it is really quite, but the power supply does not get enough air to be cooled (as the cooler just doesn't rotate fast enough). So the parts in there began to overheat it get's quite a bit noisy after a few minutes until the GPU gets stressed enough and the cooler pushes more air through the power supply. It is a bit odd that if you mod it a bit to "good" so it is quite silent you get problems with your power supply ^^. Seems like they never intended that the console can be so silent.

Games so far I liked:
Liked:
- Horizon Zero Dawn
- Ratchet & Clank (2016)
- Spiderman

Did not like:
- Knack (can't believe I really bought that but I was curious about it)
- Uncharted 1 & 2 (those are just "arena"-shooters where you can progress if everyone is dead .... not my type of game)

Games I still have to complete:
- Uncharted 2 (at least I want to finish the story) but it was so boring that I didn't play more ... have better things to play so far
- Uncharted 3 (already tried that on the PS3 but there the controls were somehow odd. The 60fps seem to correct that for me)
- Uncharted 4
- Spiderman Miles Morales (my son bought that so I guess I will also play it)

I won't play Last of us (I really don't like zombies ... IMHO if a has zombies in it the developer was out of ideas)
God of War well, I don't know yet. I didn't like the predecessors because they were just to brutal for my taste.

Still on my list, but I don't have it now is "Detroit: Become Human". And maybe I will try to get "the order 1886" but just out of curiosity.

Just drop it, i got halfway through the game and still couldn't get into it. You've more or less saw the meat and bones of the game by that point so i doubt your opinion would change much.

I tried to get into this game a couple of times. Both times I got bored and abandoned it after a few hours. Just felt no compulsion to keep going.

Drop it, whatever additions you unlock further on don't mix things up enough IMO.

That matthewmatosis video does a decent job of explaining why one might not think as this GoW as not being all that.

Also the new conflict at the end felt very forced and sequel baity IMO.

It never grabbed me too, but will give it a second chance on the PS5 with a fps boost in quiet release periods. I didn't enjoy the combat after the Bayonetta's and Devil May Cry's that came before. Also the story didn't grab me and bumping into areas I could not proceed because I was underpowered, did not felt right in this game.

If you need to go to toilet you call your friends to ask them if you can go? If not then you don't need to ask for this either
Why..? What did you won?

You should try an harder difficulty and/or turning off some HUD elements, if combat and its immersion doesn't click even then, then it might not be the right game for you.

I’d stick with it, focus on main story, don’t worry about any side stuff or anything else. There’s some phenomenal stuff you haven’t yet got to. Worst case scenario: you finish it and go, yup, didn’t like it.

My favourite God of War but if you dont like it. Dont play It. Maybe try a 2/3 more hours.

No game is loved by everyone. Even GOAT games like Half Life 2, Mario Galaxy, RE4, Dark Souls, TLOU, Final Fantasy, MGS, Uncharted 2 etc.

I hate Mario Galaxy 1-2 but it is loved by most people. I played all of Mario Galaxy reluctantly, I tried about 8 hours of Mario Galaxy 2 and then thought fuck this I dont even enjoy this or Mario Galaxy 1 and stopped And never looked back

Overall I found it to be a good game. But also one of the most overrated recent Sony titles; given the popularity of the IP, it was expected.

They severely cut down on the the gore and the remarkable boss fights, both elements that were the signature of the franchise until God of War 3 (the one I consider the best, btw). Also, the RPG elements weren't that well implemented imo... most items you collect are completely useless and after a while most of the combats can be cheapen by spamming runes. Also, they recycled optional bosses way too much.

But the story was engaging enough to keep me interested. And it made me somewhat hyped for the next game after the tease at the very end.

Or is it just one of Phil's balls in my throat?
Calling it just "God of War" with no subtitle was the most stupid decision ever. It should've been called something like God of War: Redemption, or God of War: Frost, or whatever else to set it apart from the 1st instalment.

The God Of War

Thats Days Gone level.

Definitely not a good comparison I feel. Ghost of Tsushima is on GOW level or even higher. Days gone had pretty clunky controls imo. It also felt drawn out and lacks ingenuity. Besides Days Gone doesn't have multi-player.

- Ghost of Tsushima has great combat, everything feels tight and smooth.
- The music is a lot more memorable than Days Gone.
- The length of the game is a just right and the same goes for its density. I platinumed the game without even trying. No other game has ever done that.
- The minigames are all fun to do and they give you a sense of calmness. Not to mention that everything fits to the theme and vibe of the game.
- The boss fights are also wicked. The multi-player mode (even though I didn't touch that mode at all) has received nothing but praise.
- The wind mechanic is simply genius.
- The combat system gives you tools to explore your creativity.
- All the side stories and characters are memorable.
- Amazing set pieces.
- Beautiful graphics, great color use and other cues to communicate things to the player.

Imo Ghost of Tsushima is not only a couple levels above Days Gone, but it's even a couple of levels above GOW. Ofc it's just a personal opinion though. I'm sure there's people who think otherwise.

This blows my mind. God of War is genuinely one of the best games I have played in my 43 years of gaming. I’d say it is the best PS4 game overall. The writing, direction, gameplay… it’s all done to perfection.

OP is maybe just not in the mood.

Thanks guys.

I played some more, I got to the mission after Alfheim: Kratos and Boy are at the mountain.

I'm gonna shelve it and move onto something else (Detroit Become Human)
The world would be a better place if people could just accept that they don't have to like everything, not liking something doesn't invalidate anyone else's opinion, and being able to move on.

Good for you Y0ssarian Y0ssarian

I'm all for the rest of the debates over graphics, design, etc, but when it comes to enjoyment, people need to live and let die.

All these years later I still chuckle at what a fucking moron that guy is.

I was in a similar boat, the first 5hrs were getting tedious and boring, but I kept on and the story gets better and better and the combat is like dark souls, its rather satysfying, dodging and parrying are essential (you have to look out for the visual ques, red attacks cant be parryd they need to be dodged, yellow attacks can be parryd) I say keep on, and if your still bored after another 5hrs its probably not for you.

Normally, I would say if you're not enjoying a game, you should play something else. But, if you're not enjoying God of War, you might need to get your head examined.

That might be the worst reason to not play The Last of Us that I read.

Your missing out big time. Obviously you won't know if the developer was out of ideas considering you haven't played it.

Also it's a game about human interaction more so than anything.

For me it’s the opposite, I HATED Horizon but really enjoyed GOW 2018.

The main activities in GOW are more varied, better paced. Horizon has the issue of just filling the qiests with the same old killing robodinos to many times. It needed to break it up with other activities like hearding some robo dinos or building a shelter, also having a more cohesive story, the story with its braindead chracters talking about some other tribe thats bad blah blah blah, everything just seems so unimportant. There are some better quests and story beats when you have to defend a village or attack a village, I wish the game was just 10hrs of that and not the additional filler missions.

Its crazy how varried and purposful every mission in RDR2 is.Horizon feels league aparts in terms of quality.

I put almost 20 hrs into Fallout 4 before I realized wasn't having fun with it anymore. Moved on and don't feel like I missed anything of value. Except for my 20 hours.

Don't continue to play games you dislike. Life's too short.

Yeah but you don't, so stop giving any credit to game scores. It's perfectly fine to dislike a 94 as much as it's fine to like a 70.

Life's too short, move on and hopefully you'll find a game that better suits your tastes.

I thought it was good, but it didn't absolutely blow my face off or anything.

What a shit take. And I don’t even like the game. A quantic game? Ffs.
Sorry but in my opinion PS Exclusives are the most overrated Games i have ever seen (tlou 1 is a masterpiece one of the best, i also loved every Uncharted the first one was such a huge deal in 2007 really good stuff) but the rest? Throw it away.

I was so hyped for HZD on Pc because i ddid not play that on my Pro back then and everyone on the inet said its a masterpiece. Well its generic trash. The Story started very good but halfway there it went downhill into nothing. The "open world" was a joke, the fighting was cool but got boring. I expected RDR 2 madness which is the only piece of media that made me cry but got dissapointed. 🤷‍♀️

I grew up with gow my ps 2 smoked the blood and the gow games were hard af good memories and the new one is just not gow. The story was perfectly done. They just lack every creativity for new ips this also applies to movies, look how many finished franchises from decades ago got reboots which all sucked. Media is dead. Just look the industry its a joke. Nfts? Really? 🤣

To the OP, I thought the best part of the game was everything outside of following the main story quest and just fucking around and exploring and discovering and killing and finding all sorts of cool things. I would begrudgingly progress the story just to unlock more areas to have fun in.

Probably the most overhyped game of last gen. I dropped it after about 5 hours when I realised it wasn’t getting any better.

I honestly found it to be quite boring. I, like you, kept trying to get into it, but I couldn't. It just isn't "God of War" to me - perhaps because I loved the originals so much.

Many people find this game to be amazing, but I guess it just isn't for me.

I feel you OP. I have finished all GoW games up to GoW 4. I found the first 30 minutes to be absolutely amazing. That said, the gameplay never was fun or entertaining - I was just trying to move the story forward.
I don't like the upgrading system - but I hate upgrading and crafting in any game. I have restarted three times and my latest attempt I got to the hub part where you move levers and go to different corners of a lake or something.
I just am not into it either and I don't know why. It is jaw-dropping quality and the story seems solid, but the gameplay is just okay for me. I am planning to give it another try though as I love the series.
This is one of those cases for me that I would just strongly prefer an entirely linear game. I hate having to work to find triggers to move a story forward. Too open-worldy for me. I also don't care for the cadence of combat vs. the other games in the series.

that’s a bummer cause GOW was like a 12 out 10 for me. I loved it to death. Story, graphics, combat. Couldn’t get enough of the ax, such a badass weapon.

Only game my wife has gotten frustrated with me for playing cause I couldn’t put it down. Ragnarok is my most anticipated game for this year. Can’t wait for more.

Try it a little bit more.
I quit my first playthrough on PS4 like 4 hours in.
Last month I started a new game on the PS% and, dude, 60fps does turn it into another game!
Be sure to play at least on Give Me A Challenge, normal is just boring.

That’s a hell of cute of opinion.

- Ghost of Tsushima has standard polished Sony exclusive combat.
- Theres music.
- The game crawls after the first half, basically clearing camps and road chores. U platinuming the game without even trying, means nothing at all. Just means the game is easy.
- Minigames are all “fun to do and they give you a sense of calmness”. They are boring. Point random assets and make a random poem. Press 5 buttons quickly. Not to write about, its there.
- The boss fights are the worst boss fights of any Sony exclusive I have played. Wannabe artsy, ultimately underwhelming. They play out like regular enemies with longer life bars.
5LmglFb.gif

- The wind mechanic is cute. Not even sure why that would be something to note. Might as well mention you auto pick up items.
- The combat system is as robust as all games before it. But that was already your first point.
- None the side stories or characters are memorable. What’s memorable? Cinematics are basically them just standing there talking to each other. And all most scenes are acted out by trees.
- Amazing set pieces? what? where? The opening scene?
- Great color. Graphics are very outdated. PS3 level facial animation.

The main reason why someone would think this game is better than days gone is because they are interested in Samurai lore over zombie lore. And prefer the superior environment of the colorful feudal japan, over the colorless wasteland of Oregon. If you have a romanticized view of being a Samurai, Ghost will hit a cord with you so hard, you will over hype this game with it’s standard unoffending gameplay and it’s unoffending story. Same thing with Days Gone. If Bikes and zombies are your thing, you’ll overhype that game. But they are the same. Solid gameplay, solid cookie cutter open world, and overused story beats. They are both good games. No way in hell they are TLOU2 or GOW level of polish. But you can most certainly opinionatedly prefer GOT, mainly for its combat and aesthetic.

Why..? What did you won?
I don't know you tell me. If I dont like a food I dont ask my mother if I can stop eating it. I tell her politely that I dont like it and that's it. If I don't like a shirt anymore I stop wearing it and if I dont enjoy going to a bar I don't go there either why for a game has to be different and why someone need other people opinions if he can stop or not a game he does not enjoy?

i dropped after further of the snake lake area too. other than the combat my complaint is more about how the enemy feels same over and over again with the progression feels similliar to tomb rider. it made me feels boring

that said im might be gonna to give it another chances later with pc version and look how it goes again.

It sounds like you haven't played much of Ghost of Tsushima to be able to form a well based opinion tbh.

- Simply not true, Ghost of Tsushima's combat gets more praise than most other Sony exclusives. If you've unlocked all the tools and used it creatively you'd know. But even if not so, the base combat was already solid enough as a starting point.

- The music is iconic mate lol wut. As an example you should look at different streamers streaming the opening part of the game. How the title card appeared literally gave people chills and made sum cry.

- Doesn't mean the game is easy, it means everything was well distanced. Not too far and not too close to each other. The balancing of the game and its contents are impeccable. It kept me engaged to clear out everything without it feeling like a chore.

- You say the minigames are random, but if you pay attention you'll know it's not.

The bamboo strikes which is a 7 button combo minigame and not 5 like you just so wrongly mentioned, is a way to test the player's skill. Just like the bamboo strikes irl when warriors used that to show their physical as well as smithing skills to be able to cut the bamboo cleanly in 1 smooth swing. The devs have mentioned how they've tested the mechanic with the number of buttons a person can remember and input. 7 was their number and it works for me. Every bamboo strike felt earned. It was hard enough but not so hard that it became annoying. The reward felt even greater when you account for it increasing your resolve as well.

The haikus are a way to make you feel calm and appreciate the game's beauty. It goes incredibly well with the theme, culture and vibe of the game. But more importantly it made me think bout my own life in that way too whenever I take a moment to calm myself.

The Inari shrines touches your sense of exploration. It makes you travel and explore in ways you normally might not have. Plus the reward is huge. Being able to equip more charms opens up new ways for combat approaches.

Hot springs, again ties in beautifully with the culture and theme of the game. It also gives you nice little tidbits and insight to Jin's personality.

The mountain climbs are good little puzzles which changes the pace of the game but doesn't disrubt it. It's also a great opportunity to make you marvel at the beauty once you get to the mountain top.

- The boss fights doesn't at all play out like regular enemies. They have more evasive moves and they parry a lot more. Especially on the higher difficulty settings. The scenery coupled with it also makes it a lot more epic. For example the tengu demon fight with all the birds flying around.

- The wind mechanic is genius because it fits the story so well. Again you'd know if you've paid even just a little bit of attention. You basically don't even have to open a map anymore with this mechanic coupled with the humming birds and the smoke signals. It fully immerses you into the world.

- Did TLOU, Days Gone, Death Stranding, Rachet and Clank and Uncharted get any praise for its combat?

- If you think none of the characters are memorable then you definitely didn't play through the Yuriko quest line.

- Again you'd know the setpieces if you've played the game. The opening scene, the fight with Lady Masako and the Ghost of Yarikawa fight where you drove away the Mongols are all great setpieces just to name a few.

- LOL the graphics are outdated? Even as of now the game is still considered by many to be one of the most beautiful games ever. The facial animations even though are not the best of the best, it's still top tier. What matters is that it gets the job done. It immerses people and made them feel invested. It attaches them to the story.

- You are making a huge assumption that I'm only into colorful worlds and samurai stuff and not into bleak, colorless worlds and zombie stuff. Which is definitely wrong. But I don't even care to explain that really. You made your assumption anyway.

- I'm not saying Ghost of Tsushima is better in its polish than TLOU or GOW. I'm saying it's simply a better game to me personally. Polish doesn't mean anything. You can polish a turd as much as you want. It's still shit. Ofc I'm over exaggerating and definitely not saying that TLOU, Days Gone and GOW are shit. I enjoyed them all, but I enjoyed GoT the most and Days Gone the least. You get the point (hopefully).

Anyways you can like any game you want (if you can provide valid reasoning and not come up with random things). It's your opinion. My opinion is that GoT handles its combat, theme , overall balancing and art direction of the game way better than Days Gone, TLOU and GOW did.

Ghost Of Tsushima is one of the best games of the last gen.
Your opinion is wrong, you know nothing about gaming and you should be banned😡
Not really, wrong opinions are fine
