Breaking: Microsoft to acquire Activision-Blizzard in near 70$ billion deal

Loeb was calling for that since at least 2013...SONY dug in their heels...might be the time if it helps them. I could see Amazon picking it up.
I have been calling for the divestiture of SPE and using that capital to double down on gaming and NS for years. I mentioned before that once MS opens that warchest Sony would be in a delicate position. MS has opened up the warchest (and I don't think this is their last big acquisition). SPE is just something they use to be part of Hollywood, but honestly the money is better used somewhere else. Their best IP in that division is owned by someone else where they get zero from merch. They'd have potential buyers lined up. Funny thing though is until SPE sale clears and TTWO finishes the acquisition of Zynga it would be almost time for MS to be cleared to buy another one again. Sony done goofed, but they need to get a move on if they don't want to be left in the dust.

Internal sales competition in MS games... would be quite insane...
Their internal creative report would be like a mini E3...

As a gamepass holder, I am glad to hear that it now has more value - but at the same time - it's little scary how big MS is becoming in gaming world.
It really does seem like they are really footing the foundation vs Amazon/Apple/Google.

It would be interest how the whole consumer market would react, and what Sony's counterpunch would be... and Nintendo as well.

I'll have to look that up. I don't know what that is. lol.
EA Pass/ GAMEPASS etc are platforms which offer games for a monthly fee..within the platform they offer a variety of games. This platform can be bought direct or through a go between like xbox or playstation (I expect gamepass on PSN by PS5 eol). When sold through the go between, the go between gets a 'fee' for the customer.

They should.

IMO MS' next target once this closes in 12-18 months will be EA or Take Two.

Take Two won't consider selling until the Zynga acquisition completes. It'll cost 30B+. Likely 40B+. Sony can buy Take 2 in one of three ways.

1) Loans and finance
2) Stock and cash transaction
3) Divest SPE and use the capital to purchase Take Two.

SPE will go for 30B+ freeing up the capital for a much needed acquisition. SPE also has one of the lowest ROIC for Sony (~7%).
I mean in theory yes they could but MS would never let themselves get out muscled by Sony, impossible. They’ll pay a premium to out bid them and that’s all. They are not joking around anymore.

Appreciate it. I was reading the EA Play wiki. Honestly had never heard of it until you mentioned it, nor have I ever seen it being advertised on the PSN.

I'm totally out of the loop though when it comes to the bulk of modern gaming.

Do you guys think Microsoft has had their sights on Activision for a while now or that the sexual misconduct allegations which toppled Activision's stock value just made it too good a deal to pass up?

Damn! What a huge play. Then again, Phil did say this from the beginning. I guess we’ll have to believe him Now when he said sony wasn’t the competition. Their goal of becoming the Netflix of gaming moves ever so close. Won’t be surprised at all if the next Xbox is a streaming device. Sony wanted this as well but it looks like MS beat them to it. Sony got drunk on the success of hardware sales it looks like. Either way, nothing changes for me. PlayStation plus PC with game pass still the best option and nothing changes. Congrats console warriors. Big day for some of you guy. Also, congrats MS. Good play.

I'll bet money on it too. They won't. You were probably saying the same thing about Elder Scrolls and Starfield and we know how that turned out. MS did not pay all this money to continue to put these games on their competitor's system.

There is a massive audience that only plays COD and they will buy an Xbox to continue to play it.
Nah I wasn’t actually… I don’t believe any of those franchises are on cod or Minecraft’s level. I can see warzone remaining multi and everything else like the yearly releases being exclusive. Why handicap your Fortnite compositor, that’s just dumb as hell.

Deal was set in motion awhile ago. This is $70 billion we're talking about.

Right. I mean right now MS won't do anything as they wait for the ATVI deal to close, but once that closes they would certainly outbid pretty much anyone for EA, Take Two or Ubi. I don't think they'd go all out for SE or Capcom, for example.

So what does that even mean though? And I'm not being snarky, I'm just generally clueless on gamepass.

If gamepass were to come to Sony would it be like streaming xbox games from the cloud? Or do people think that XBOX games would be locked behind a gamepass paywall in the PSN store? And would it be MS hosting all the storage space and MS reaping 100% of the profit or would Sony get a cut?

I just have a hard time envisioning gamepass being on Sony consoles and how people think it would function.
Same as how it works on Xbox I’d imagine. If Game Pass is on PS I believe MS would also make the games available to purchase on the PS Store.

You mean the scummy Medium deal? Or maybe Stalker 2? Rise of the Tomb Raider maybe?
When you have to go back nearly a decade I think the argument is dead. Microsoft might by a few low level indy games but your comparisons to Sony buying major AAA games from Square and Zenimax is lol.

Wouldn't be surprised if some of the larger institutional owners bent MS's ear.

It certainly helped, but from the size and frequency of the acquisitions it seems that Microsoft has something in mind... like global domination.

Who knows. Perhaps Activision shareholders lost faith in leadership (Bobby Kotick) when their stocks cratered and when they realized that COD Vanguard was a colossal thud. Microsoft is always looking for another blockbuster acquisition anyway, but I doubt Activision was their first option before the allegations happened.

Appreciate it. I'm really showing how dumb I am with modern things. I swear, I used to be up to speed on these things but something happened a few years back and now I'm just like 10 years behind everyone, ha.

If they could Sony would go back in time and never sign those scummy times exclusive deals that benefit absolutely nobody.

Waste of money and now they made MS angry 😂

I think the COD deal helped them but it will interesting to see how this will impact on sales of PS5 and their subscription service.

when does this deal finalize? It took 6 months for the Bethesday one i think? Xbox was on top of that thing. Like 2 days later they had a press conference and dropped a ton of games on GamePass.

basically when do i get Black Ops 1 & Diablo 3 on GamePass

It is not good for anyone to get COD or GTA but let's be honest. We had a lot of styling and profiling around here when the Ryan money hat tour was leaked. Many warned of karma well phil is serving it up.

Think about how EA play works. You can buy EA games individually or just subscribe and download. I think Microsoft's first iteration of Game Pass on PS5 could look very similar to that. No cloud, just first party Xbox games available for a subscription or full price.

After they get their foot in the door then it could adapt and eventually be merged into the main Game Pass sub.

Remember, Microsoft floated the idea of individually submitting streamed games to the App Store in order to follow Apple's terms of service be on iOS. They have shown they are willing to bend what Game Pass is a bit to get a foothold into a platform.
