Digital Foundry - GeForce Now RTX 3080 Cloud vs xCloud vs Stadia

Game streaming services have come on leaps and bounds since the early days of OnLive, Gaikai and even PlayStation Now. In this video, we take a look at the new RTX 3080 tier for GeForce Now, putting the service through its paces against Microsoft's xCloud and Google in terms of image quality, latency and more. On top of that, native PC and local Xbox Series X comparisons also feature.

Latency tested on 60 and 120 hz (120 only supported on Crucible):

Outriders comparison at 60 hz:

There are quality comparison for outriders but I can't upload the pictures. Basically native looks best, followed by GFN and then the rest.

Finally pricing for the 3080 tier (which by the way is an A10G which could have some impact on game performance (less memory bandwidth but higher everything else):

Not bad but a bit too expensive for my market.

I gotta say, when next gen comes, I might stream some games if xcloud increases image quality.
If next gen is anything like this one its going to be years until must have next gen games come out.

It says there 60hz for both but even so why is it taking so long for a controller and a shorter time to travel to a server somewhere in the world and back.

Isnt geforce now using some hardware intensive latency reduction tech?

But even if it is, it really does not make a whole lot of sense that cloud is more responsive then local.

Why is latency on Native Xbox Series X more than Geforce Now streaming on the app. WTF surely that's not right.
Because console gaming. There are other tests where geforce now already beat Series X latency...

I'd be interested in a streaming service as a stop-gap for new hardware.

The problem is that Geforce Now is missing several games I'd use it for and other services like shadow for example are too expensive.

This is surprising for me as well. They explain the method for testing in the video, sounds legit.

Still, I think the platform to beat is PC.

I’m talking about the old Founders subscription, they kept the price at $5 and turned it into a life time price cut until you cancel the subscription, but now the subscriptions are called Priority and RTX 3080 - Which one is the Founders sub now? Priority or RTX 3080?

Only compared to other consoles, it seems.

Just what is it that's stopping consoles from having input lag comparable to PCs? You'd think that sort of stuff would be a lot easier to optimize on devices with fixed hardware configurations.
No idea other than maybe some crap vsync...

This shows that fps number is only half the story. Most importantly native PC has ~3 times lower latency. I doubt streaming will ever be comparable. XSX figures are very questionable here.

I could be interested by GFnow or xCloud but they do not support ultrawide resolutions.
I'll try Shadow by curiosity but in the long run it is too expensive for the use I would make of it (having already a Switch, a One X and Wii U with a backlog).

Have been using some xcloud on my phone when traveling, its really nice once you have a stable fast connection. i was really suprised how far streaming has come

Let's just say that i'm ready to give away all of that and just keeping 4k60 high details and the chance of buying keys in external stores...do we have a deal?!
If you don't mind the added lag + lost in IQ, go for it, and if you can get "good enough" lag from GFN servers...

While that may be true, I go tthe chance to play on Xcloud a few months ago because I RMA my GPU. Not perfect but very very serviceable.

I used to be very skeptical but I can see a place for it in the market.

meh, i bought an lg c1 to have less input lag etc.

I also care about IQ.

Maybe in the next 2-3 years they are gonna improve greatly since everyone and their mother in here think that digital\streaming is the future of gaming...(so they are kinda forced to improve to be competitive)

I wish they had covered consistency a bit more. I’d like to know more how different internet speeds and locations matter.

You can try it for free (not the 3080 level though).

Tried it last week on my phone and it dropped a few times. Also way too slow for pick up and play. I'm morally against streaming, but with geforce now you at least access your Steam library.

Same problem as before global internet infrastructure still not their we're prolly another 20 years away from maybe getting low latency.

I don't hate the pricing if the perf is dependable. At this rate I really think I can stretch my 1070Ti until it's time to just go Streaming mostly. Don't think I'll build a new gaming rig anytime soon.

Thats good cause the gaming industry won't be able to raise those minimum specs higher then 1070 anyways due to gpu shortages and horrendous prices.

Why test with TAA when u have DLSS.

Also how do you get such high MS numbers on native PC? I sure as hell don't get 50 ms which is what 20 fps? worth of latency on my PC.

***subject to end users internet connection and household load

Lots of work to be done on xcloud to be usable for multiplayer, but as others are showing - it is possible to get something usable.

while I have had generally positive experiences on xCloud, they do fall behind Stadia just from my testing and looks like GFN is even better. MS really needs to improve the latency on their console and especially the cloud infra.

What ?
In only 2 years (first Stadia DF test), the latency has been reduced to almost 70ms.

Destiny 2 (Stadia)
144 ms back then ("fine" according to Richard)
87 ms in 2022 (for instance, many xbox One S games have 150 ms of input lag)

Most people in western europe have decent connections.

"Western Europe has the fastest average internet speeds in the world at 90.56 Mbps, ahead of North America at 71.68 Mbps and the Baltics at 68.06 Mbps.15 sept. 2021"

Agreed. Xcloud has improved a lot when you access it directly from the console app or via console, still a little iffy at times via browser.
