Michael Pachter - Gamepass will destroy Sony. Sony will cease to exist.

On the RDX podcast today Michael Pachter was asked about how he sees the landscape between Sony and Microsoft this gen, to which he replied "I think PlayStation is doomed, and I think they will cease to exist with how we know them in about 10 years. They can't compete, they have no chance of competing".

His point is that Gamepass is going to become the biggest thing in gaming and Sony don't have the first party studios to fill a comparable service, and the back catalogue that MS is going to have when Activision closes is a mountain too high for them.
While he might be laughed at by some here, he is the leading games futurist and he influences investment decisions amongst other things.

I doubt it.

As shit as Sony is with their decisions lately, MS always messes up sooner or later.

MS now has significantly more 1st party studios than Sony and their IP list completely blows Sony's out of the water by comparison.

On paper. But I just don't feel like it will manifest into huge results.

I hope I'm wrong because Sony needs to get their ass kicked to truly be in top form.

I don’t typically dislike / like most analyst - as their job is what it is. I am mature enough to remain neutral to their shtick.

But.

Pachter, I remember in the 2005/2006 days spoke of Sony ending PlayStation, never having PlayStation return and would be out of business in the coming short term future.

He was WRONG. Since then, he has been wrong MULTIPLE times. Which is what it is, his job is to keep his name in the press. This dude just has a historical path of stone cold takes and I wish gaming media would stop caring so much. He is as wishy washy and wrong as they come almost every single time.

Only someone who doesn't understand the power of videogames would say something this stupid. I do believe Game Pass will become one of the biggest things in all of gaming, and I do believe its value will be tough to match.

But here's the problem with saying Sony is doomed and will cease to exist: if you just love fucking games, there's no way you'll ever stop caring about the games Playstation has, but that Xbox doesn't have. Gamers = greed. You can never have enough. You want it all.

There was some interesting bits from what I heard. The thought of the FTC involvement when it comes to gaming acquisitions and exclusive content. Hardly think about the FTC when these things happen.

I remember seeing various Pachter declarations over the years, but when did he get such a strong opinion against Sony? I'm genuinely curious.

I and you might not Rate him, but when outlets want to know what's happening in the industry they arnt contacting us for comment, they contact him. Alot of companies actually employ him for his advice about the industry.
We may think its taking money under false presences, but unfortunately others don't.
It is not even his work area.

If he was wrong in his working area like he is with Videogame business then he should not even have a job for years already.

Wedbush Securities analyst Michael Pachter doesn’t seem to think so- speaking exclusively to GamingBolt, Pachter said that the game’s innate ‘Japanese-ness’ will hold it back from broad commercial appeal, at least in terms of selling systems.

“I don’t think anything that has that Japanese flavor has broad appeal,” Pachter said. “They’re great games and get high ratings, and the hardcore audiences love them. But, for the average audience, they’re hard games. They’re too hard for most people. I mean, I played Persona 5, one of the highest rated games ever, and I like it, but I can’t believe it went on to sell as many copies as it did. It’s just not the kind of game that seems like it has mass appeal, even though it’s one of the best games ever made, and probably wins Game of the Year. But… going back to Tsushima, no, I don’t think it has broad appeal either.”

When I could get game pass for <$60 for a year (on cdkeys/etc.), I would have agreed. But it now costs twice that (i.e. $30 for 3 months keys or $120 for 1 year). And I’m betting the gold-to-game pass ultimate conversion promo is going to eventually come to an end.

So yeah, hard pass on renewing when my subscription ends next year.

This is the guy who was wrong about the Switch. Wrong about customers embracing paid online to begin with. I believe he's the one who even predicted World of Warcraft would quickly collapse? (that may have been another "analyst").

This just smacks of taking a shot in the dark. Imagine claiming people will stop buying games for PlayStation consoles simply because Game Pass may become popular. There would have to be some sea-changing event that affects more than just gaming, that sweeps players towards such a new reality. Like how the pandemic nearly wiped out movie theaters, and certainly has forever changed how studios will release movies in the future.

Right this moment, Sony is the second largest name in the business. People literally cannot buy their product fast enough. But that will just collapse because of subscriptions. OK.
