Rumor: Apple is currently discussing internally to re-enter the gaming console market

The scary thing is what Apple might do to push the industry to an awful place for enthusiasts. Imagine introducing a stream box that becomes mega successful then everyone follows. Yes I know the last big corporation who tried this (Google) failed miserably but still.

People are gonna buy this for like $900 to play Apple Arcade games and look down upon the poor PS5/XSX plebs.

I can only see them do this by buying the Playstation division or choose to go for Arcade games console combined with streaming

I can't imagine apple releasing anything with a proper controller to their audience.
Maybe this has something to do with their rumored AR/VR efforts.

Bullshit they are.

Sure they are. Their new processors are extremely capable and would be a perfect fit for a console, considering their integrated nature. The issue is, of course, that they aren't running x86, so it would take a lot of work for the developers to port their games.

Their mobile CPUs are also at the top of most benchmarks. But maybe you thought I was referring to design? Design is of course subjective.

That's not an issue these days, differences in architecture can be mostly transparent for the developer providing they didn't develop the code with a lot of specific dependencies.

Even when they do they just have to replace those and recompile. It's still a new platform to support and it requires resources though on the risk of spreading your team and support too thin.

It's 2022. You don't need a Box to stream anymore and there already is one major playing doing just that.

I have no doubt that they can make the hardware, but I just don’t trust them to not abandon it so I don’t really feel comfortable spending lots of money on games for it.

I don't know why, but I hate Apple. I only had one Apple device, an ipad, and it worked great, so it's not something related to a bad experience with their products. I simply hate their brand and I don't know why.

You don't like capitalist driven neutral pseudo-woke authoritarianism that's heavily reliant on falacies and cherry picked information that only suits them.

Well, you should never trust Apple on that front, but the M1 and anything over it is probably safe for a while, perhaps 5 years+ of support. It's a good baseline so they might as well try to lower die size and with it production costs, this while keeping the level of performance mostly similar instead of increasing it.

M1 support will probably end at least as late as the upcoming M2 support lasts (it's clocking in 2 years in november, so total 7 years support). From there on? 5 years and losing features against newer equipment once 2/3 years go by. That's the Apple way of doing things.

They should be doing 10 years support minimum on "pro" machines.

on the behalf of every single gamer that exists on earth, stay the fuck out apple for the love of god
i hate iphones, i hate macs, i hate apple watches, i hate IOS, i hate everything apple does and i'd rather not see them add yet another shitty thing into their already shitty lineup of products. if they do this they'll bring the joystick back to atari 2600 levels because "courage" or some bull.

Considering that Apple are some of the best, if not the best, hardware designers around, it would certainly be interesting if they decide to go all in.
so great at their hardware design in fact that Louis Rossmann has made multiple videos on how amazing it is....

They have the tech and engineering to make a good console.
But they'd also need to heavily invest in games as I don't think even apple would find much success releasing an expensive box that just plays third party games.

Pricing would also be interesting. Apple like making premium products for premium prices. If it's going to be a $1000 console with $150 controller the performance and build quality needs to be a considerable step above the Ps5/SX.

I think they will do their own thing like they’ve been doing with Apple TV+. I guess that adding games to the AppleTV box as one of the key selling points it is a natural step for them. With the advancements they have made with their new chip it has a lot of potential.

Eh? Apple Arcade is the best thing to happen to modern day mobile gaming. No ads, no MTX and good games. If they can stay on this track a console from them could be pretty cool.

Much like TV+ it feels like Apple is attempting to put quality above quantity to a certain extent. I'd love to see them push for higher end AA and AAA games with that same mindset.

Apple should just buy Nintendo

There is not much Apple can do to get me interested in a potential Apple console or gaming service, but this would surely do it for me.
Nintendo fits pretty well with Apple since their content is family friendly, might as well buy Disney too while they're at it. lol

A console makes sense for them.

I wouldn't buy one unless it was cheap, or they fucked over all of us by buying up huge studios. Going for exclusionary exclusivity rather than taking a Sony/Microsoft approach.

AppleTV already plays games.

I don’t need or have any desire to buy another branded box to play games but I will also preorder it day one if it becomes a thing because I am a weak weak man.

I don't care much for random clickbait by a random Youtuber. Sorry. I trust you have better arguments than that?

That's not a random youtuber man - Rossman has been fixing macs for years, he's seen through a microscope thousands of units of mac hardware and he's also a big voice in right to repair advocacy.

i guess apple making controllers so you can 'dock' your ipad and iphone, but holy shit that notch is annoying!!

does the metal api allow you go make games for MacOS and iOS at the same time from the ground up?

i will give a shit if they pull a rosetta 3 for the m1 chipsets.

Proton on the steam deck is fucking wizardshit

They should not, just use M1-based gaming and you're good to go. The Mac Mini could be their console-like entry with enough power, more powerful than Xbox Series S, at least, if not main current gen consoles.

I’d lap this up, it would dominate and obliterste competition in terms of hardware. DO IT.

It won’t. You’re looking at the M1 Max SoC before you find something capable of comparing against the PS5 in terms of 3D rasterization performance, and that isn’t found in anything under $2000.

At console price points, they’d chuck
In the M1 which is much weaker GPU wise than the Series S.

Better CPU, certainly.

I don't currently use Apple phones or PC's but I have been impressed with their Apple TV devices, Apple TV+ and Apple Arcade. I'm very interested.
