Rumor: Apple is currently discussing internally to re-enter the gaming console market

Some people will be very excited about Apple entering this space no? Even bigger war chest than MS, they make much better products, have incredible hardware, and they can just start buying shit left and right and run away with gaming.

Yes? It sounds amazing no? Let’s do this, hey maybe Apple says fuck it and buys Nintendo or Sony, why not? They could add Take Two, EA, Ubisoft, etc all in one go. It’s so exciting.

I mean I dont mind competition, but I really wonder what Apple would do besides buying companies.

Google and Amazon (and Microsoft lol) have learned that buying shit is easy. Making games is hard. And you can get as many talented people as you want and still flop when it times come to actually make a game worthwhile.

It is far more likely that Apple will spin up a streaming service that is part of their monthly apple + subscription (which is fantastic btw). It will keep streaming titles away from their App Store where there are too many hoops for them to jump through to sell the titles...ahem...equitably.

The hardware will be an upgraded apple TV with an M1 chip, 10gb ethernet, wifi6 with support for their upcoming wide area connection offering.
They will ship it will an apple branded controller (read razer or steelseries) and it will retail for $299.99 (128gb storage 8k support) with a free 90 sub to the service.

They will call it Apple Play or Apple Game or Apple N-Joy or or some other thing then act like they created game streaming just like they did with the keyboard and the pencil.

-OR-

They will create a whole new product category, jump right in to making games, and turn into an entertainment forward conglomerate after purchasing WB/Paramount. <--- They will MOST CERTAINLY do this (but probably not the wb thing :) )

Serious question. Why is Apple still struggling to get ports of multiplat AAA games? Is the hardware still not there, or is there some OS limitation which makes porting games difficult? It seems like a goldmine, and it’s weird that it hasn’t become a priority for developers, considering so many people have macs.

Why create a console when devs don’t even care to port to their devices that already have millions of users?

They do, it is called a dualsense controller. They partnered with Sony, they showcased the controller and they talked about games on the Apple tv. They also partner with Nintendo, so these rumours make no sense at all unless they want to push macOS as a gaming system alternative... but they are very very very late.

If anything, last time we had these type of rumours about Apple... MS went all crazy and the xbox one was born.
That’s really not the same thing as having an “apple controller” that you can go into an apple store and buy and have it work seamlessly across every iOS device, like AirPods. It’s really, really not.

You need to think about it from the sense of a dumb as a brick consumer, not from someone like you or myself that is into tech. It’s either going to be a complete end to end apple solution or nothing. Allowing a third party controller to work, and basically not marketing it at all, while not pushing for games that can compete with the big guys, is not a video game strategy.

They should rather focus on bringing Metal up to gaming standards so macOS gets games again. Would rather have macOS be a platform for proper gaming than yet another console in my TV board.

Yeah pretty much

My bet is STILL that apple will buy playstation (from Sony) in the coming years

they can pay in cash
If that’d happen, which I strongly doubt personally, it’d probably make the Activision/Blizzard purchase look like peanuts in terms of money.

I could see a cooperation between Playstation and Apple though.

Why not. Create a dedicated apple controller that can work on everything. They’ve immediately got the biggest gaming ecosystem in the world from the word “Go” at that point. Would be interesting to see how that would all go down.

There's a big difference between biggest gaming eco system and biggest "good" gaming eco system. They will bury this quicker than you can say "Google".

A traditional Apple console is not going to work. Nobody buys an iPhone just to play games. Lots of people buy Sony, MS, Nintendo consoles just to play games. But the biggest problem is that Apple doesn't really get or care about gaming. It's a non-starter.

The barrier of entry is super high.

Though ironically you could say that Microsoft and by extension Sony have lowered those barriers.

In general, all they need to do is put out a series of consoles with ps5/xsx like specs and create a platform of support across macOS/tvOS/iOS.

They don't need to sell as many systems as say Sony or even Microsoft. They can make the difference with sales of games for MacBooks and imacs.

Could totally see them adopting the Dual Sense to do it.

They already have many capable machines out there with M1 Macs and Ipads.
The need to fund content, and better APIs for third party ports. No one needs another box.

Their hardware is incredible, and they consistently hire the best talent around. People underestimating Apple just show what they actually know.

Only reason they are playing hard to get is because they actually care about product, they have an image to protect, and that means they wouldn’t be cool with entering the console market with some half assed dud, with a bunch of horrible games, and spend their way out of it.

They are, this tiny box (smaller than PS5 and Xbox Series X offers performance of around Nvidias 3090.

The M2 is scheduled for this year and said to blow that away.
That was debunked several times already. No where near the performance of a 3090. Apple graphs are some of the most skewed examples, with absolutely no metrics to what they are trying to convey.

It was debunked to not be more powerful.
The M2 will be more powerful.

No excuses there. This is Apple being Apple. They should have sold the stand with the monitor. A bargain in comparison to reference monitors that Apple is marketing this towards.
They should also sell chargers to go along with their phones. They don't really care about the environment, so the decision isn't to benefit the earth. Otherwise, user repairability would be a thing common thing with them.

It was up to a certain power consumption but the 3090 keeps drawing more power.
The Mac Pro will be the true show of how good their graphics performance is as they won’t be throttling it

I use Apple devices since their Steve Jobs era. All I notice is them cheapening things and making their products more expensive.
The premium Android phones are expensive because of Apple. They throw everything into the phone to make their android phones look expensive/match an iPhone price.
Not saying Apple does not make good products, they still do but the pricing been getting ridiculous over the years.

This must feel like, because you are very/relatively young. This is an example of Apple's pricing back in 90's.

Mac IIfx. $10,000. Adjusted for inflation it would cost 19K dollars if it was introduced today.

Big companies don't care about petty console wars in the slightest. They care about revenue, marketshare, and pleasing investors.

That is until someone new shows up. Then they care like their life depended on it.

MS, Sony, and even Nintendo have absolutely no problem whatsoever laying down their swords, if it's to gang up on a new competitor. Despite what many pretend to be the case, MS, Sony, and Nintendo are all perfectly satisfied with one key metric above all others... That being that they are one of the 3 successful console makers that currently exist.

Let Apple show up with a brand new console all they want. Once that Red, Green, and Blue trifecta combine to make a blinding white light, they'll quickly realize they've made a mistake and retreat back to where they came from.

I'd go so far as to say... If Apple successfully entered the console market, and was gaining significant marketshare. That Sony and MS would have no problem releasing each others exclusives on both their platforms, if it meant squeezing out the competition. When it comes to gaming, being 1 of only 3 in the console business is paramount to absolutely everything else.

Yeah right. They'll devalue their products by going into the gaming market because they can't just slap a 2000 dollar price tag on their top of the line chips like with their M1 Max/Ultra, which they absolutely need in the console market. They're already in the handheld market with their iPhone anyway. Unless they rip-off the Switch, in which case good fucking luck since Nintendo sells their hardware by means of games, which Apple doesn't have.

Absolutely not. Apple execs are fully against software as a streaming service.

After seeing the Mac Studio, I think Apple could make a great console
Everyone can create impressive expensive* hardware. Can they create compelling hardware at the right price? But more importantly can they deliver on the games?

Exactly.
It would be a surprise to absolutely no one if Apple's console were weaker than Xbox and Playstation's offerings, while costing well over $1k at the same time.

Give Apple, Microsoft, and Sony the same price point for which to sell their consoles, and it wouldn't even be close. The gap between MS's/Sony's offering compared to Apples would be ridiculously huge.
