Enderal, free RPG running on Skyrim engine is a must-play

I hope that Z has nothing to do with putler
I had the Z way before the meme movement and subsequent backlash against the innocent 26th letter of our alphabet.

Long story short, I was rocking the automatic letter avatar when a kind gaf member told me that I really should have my own. I told him I liked the simplicity of the letter, so he jokingly scribbled the Z up for me, and the rest is history.

So this game is kind of a masterpiece and one of the best RPGs of the last few years, it really should be getting mainstream recognition considering it is free (although you gotta own Skyrim, preferably SE version). It is also better than Skyrim in all the ways that matter (to me), specifically writing (the characters here are memorable, well defined), quest design, world design and character progression. In 70 hours of playtime (and I think I still have at least 50 ahead of me) I had no significant bugs and no crashes, either. You do not need Skyrim installed - the game is standalone, but you need to own it.

It has incredibly high quality full voice acting for every single character as well as its own, amazing soundtrack.

With a few KBs of ENB it looks gorgeous to boot.

Basically, if you enjoy open world first person RPGs with great writing and can handle Skyrim's engine (and have a PC), you should definitely play it.

Few shots I took in my playthrough so far:

Wow, that looks fantastic! I've had this mod for a year and haven't played it. Downloading it now. Anything I should know about setting up ENB to get it to look like your screenshots? Saw that you mentioned you used "the first four steps of ENB's description", but I'm not sure which description you're referring to. No pressure!

Odd, why do you need to own the game but not have it installed? It uses the engine so I could see it needing Skyrim installed to run. But what's the significance of just owning it?

Basically if you own it on your steam account, then the Enderal steam install finds it and can download the necessary data from Skyrim that it needs to run. If you don't own it, it cannot do that.

And you do not need Skyrim installed because Enderal is standalone, has its own folder, its own configuration and save files, etc.

Everytime I try to get into this I get to the main city and then things just lose steam for me. I assume it picks up, but I always get distracted by something else. Might be a good time to check out as there really isn't a major release on the near horizon.

All you gotta do is download Enderal via Steam (again, SE version is much preferable), download the enb files from

Then go to the nexus site I linked in OP, download the main file and two optional ones (if you want, personally I disabled the letterbox)

And follow the first three or four or however many steps you want here:

I only followed the first four.

Also, ENB brightens up colors of menu and loading screens, so I used this

This may seem complicated but it is literally just copy/pasting few KBs of files, took me literally less than 5 minutes.

Hah, personally I was kinda mind blown by how large and detailed the city is, so for me it fully picked up there.

Been playing this for the last month. Wrapped it up today. For a free mod, you may as well try it if you were a fan of Skyrim. For me, the Skyrim gameplay really is showing it's age. I really liked the characters and story. The game world was decently made as well. I had some hard crashed towards the end that really annoyed me and I almost gave up. The downside of using Skyrim for the base for the mod. Voice acting is well done and sometimes you forget you are playing a mod. It feels more like Skyrim standalone DLC. Pretty crazy how big the game is and how much content it has.

I actually finished Enderal some days back as well, it took me a while:

enderal5bj92.png

I loved it, right until the end. That is, including the end,
eventhough it is not exactly a…happy ending. It actually hit really hard. Speaking with Jespar and Arantheal broke me a little, before I destroyed the beacon.

Despite their issues I enjoy Bethesda games. I like them, and yes, without Beth’s engine and awesome tools, Enderal (or equally brilliant Forgotten City) would not exist.

But for me, as a game - as an experience - Enderal is better than any Bethesda game I played, and I played them all since Morrowind. Because no Beth game, as much as I enjoy them, actually managed to make emotional impact like this.

In my view, it is one of the best RPGs ever. Yeah yeah Skyrim combat blah blah who gives a fuck, just play mage and barbecue people with fireballs or resurrect the dead and let them fight for you or headshot them with arrows.

The exploration, atmosphere, characters, quests, story - this is where Enderal shines and is easily up there with the best

After finishing it, I went and watched the trailers released by SureAI. I must say, I am glad I never watched them before. They spoil a LOT, and eventhough without context you don’t exactly know, there are some location surprises that I thought were really cool when playing, and the trailer spoils some of them.
I am considering buying the Dreams of the Dying book, although I am not sure if I have it in me to read 700 pages in English.

Also, those of you who played Enderal release version and not the Forgotten Stories version - if you enjoyed it, I would suggest a replay. I just checked what the expansion added, and actually probably three of my favourite questlines in the game are all from the expansion.

Do not ignore the arena undercity fighting quest.

I had some hard crashed towards the end that really annoyed me and I almost gave up.

That's weird. Did you play the 64bit SE version? Because I gotta say, in 142 hours, and with ENB on top, I had zero crashes. It was the most stable "bethesda" game I ever played.

Anyway, last few shots

Have played for about 138hours so far, wished I knew some of the things I now know before I started the game (would have helped a lot in the start).

I possible have a broken game though, not fully sure how important the specific quest is, but it have been sitting in my quest log for ages and have not started/activated yet, despite doing what I'm supposed to do to start it, I have no idea when it "broke" but I'm not restarting from a place 60-80hours ago to "fix" it, IF its even possible.

A few screenshots from the game (well screenshot "posing" actually).

I could not find Jespar at the end.

Yeah looks like he's got a bunch of mods on to make things look a bit nicer.

IF you are referring to my pictures, there is exactly 3* mods and 1 ENB that affects what you see on them, and 99% of if the ENB's effect.
* 4 if you count the CBBE/3BA Bodyslide (but that is mostly for armor/clothing to generate the meshes).

High Poly Head SE v1.4
Bijin Skin CBBE 4K
Expressive Facial Animation -Female Edition**
**(do not seem to work as well in my Enderal as it does in Skyrim SE, but that is the "small" expression in second picture).

Everything else visually comes from Silent Horizons ENB 7.1.

I'm also using mods specifically to make poses;
Poser Hotkeys Plus and a variety of poses mods.

Here is a quick comparison between NO ENB (Vanilla Enderal vs Silent Horizon ENB 7.1)

I also used ENB, altough different one than Mithos. I posted a guide in this thread.

This game is absolutely awesome. It kicks skyrim in the nuts in many ways, particularly in terms of classic rpg design. I was enthralled front to back, and ended up playing for 130 hours.

Beware if you find yourself fighting a particular pair of bad guys in an enclosed space and they seem like they won't die, you may need to open the console and do a quick god mode to get through it. There's a bug that makes them incredibly hard to beat. Unfortunate that it's not fixed, but don't let it stop you.

Hey do you happen to know what I am supposed to do for step four? I like the particle patch changes in the screenshots but I can't figure out how to properly install it.

Step 4 says install textures and meshes only and no plugin but when I install from archive on vortex it doesn't give those options. Am I supposed to install it anyway and just disable the plugin?

If I am supposed to install it manually then which folders should I use? I am assuming I don't do the plugin folder but not sure what to do with the rest. There is a bsa folder in there.

If I remember correctly, I took the meshes and textures folders from \assets\loose and pasted them in the Enderal folder where it made sense (I cannot check now exactly where because I uninstalled it).

I did not use any mod manager or the plugin file at all.

I finally started this up and am about 10 hours in. It's a far more focused and "tight" experience compared to Skyrim. Less freedom overall but I would argue that it's more compelling that way. There's still plenty to do in terms of side quests and exploration, but the smaller scope makes everything feel more meaningful and impactful. Plus, I would imagine pretty much everything in the game is handcrafted and placed, including (worthwhile) loot.

This looks really good. I have watched a bit of gameplay from early on and the atmosphere is great. The only issue I have is a certain persistent mechanic that seems will be with you the entire game:

The "magic fever" mechanic looks to be the type that annoys me no end. Keep this constantly ticking meter down/up or suffer the consequences
.

Reassure me it's not so bad or can be turned off? If it's essential then maybe not the game for me.

OK
I'm interested.

But what does a "few kb" mean? Half a MB and 4 hours of frustration trying to figure it out or is it as simple as you've made it sound?
The OP is probably right about the quality here. Everything I've seen about this game looks absolutely amazing.

There's also two other games that take place in the same world. Nehrim, which is also available on GOG and uses Oblivion and another one that uses Morrowind.

How many people, or was it just one person, who was behind all this?

It's amazing to see how much the community seems to care more about making a good game than big companies do.

It's so awesome too that the people who made this are not even asking for money. I guess they can't because it's just a mod. But still, this was a complete work of love.

For Skyrim SE, I tested many ENB's before settling on SH so I could have tested it but cant tell for sure, but only Pi-Cho and Silent Horizon gave me the result I wanted for/on my character.

Between Pi-Cho and Silent Horizon, SH gave me the result I wanted without to much fiddling, I remember that shadows looked very dithered in Pi-Cho for me compared to the shadows in SH, also my characters skin color was more where I wanted it too in SH compared to Pi-Cho "pure white/ porcelain white" for my Vampire character back then. So I just stuck with Silent Horizon when moving to Enderal SE.

I sort of wish this game was official and part of the Elder Scrolls universe but it's its own thing.

Again, this is a labor of love since nobody is asking for money for this. It was created out of passion and look how much better it is than the original product.

It is literally just copy pasting few files to correct folders according to instructions. When I first decided to use ENB because default Enderal look was too lastgeny, it took me about 5 minutes to achieve transformational difference...including googling how to do it.

Of course I do not know if those files are still up to date and what not.

This game looks great overall, but I still cannot believe how much worse trees got in Skyrim with Bethesda dropping Speedtree for an in house solution…

I love Archolos and overall would say they have similar quality, but Enderal is much more hard hitting in its story and characters.
Specifically the Forgotten Stories version which contains the best questlines.

It really amazes me how a small group of people did such an amazing job with this game that manages to be even better than the game by Bethesda.

One thing that used to make Elder Scrolls unique was the weirdness of it all but after Morrowind everything was pretty much standard fantasy.

Meanwhile, the small group of people makes a total conversion mod that has a very unique story and some actual weird stuff. There's everything from airships to trains to giant robots to being swallowed by a giant creature.

It's weird how Bethesda can't seem to compete with that even though I love their universe.

I'm pretty sure I seen mods that can be used for it. Of course it's a mod in and of itself but there are mods for that mod.

You have nothing to lose especially since it's free. And believe me, I would consider it to be worth buying. I guess you could support the devs by buying the soundtrack which is five bucks or the novel that's based in that setting.

I haven't had a single crash, the only thing that i noticed is that SMIM apparently has a slight issue with the mod and removes a certain piece of land. You can easily disable it for this section though.

I could barely get through 10% of Skyrim but I'm having a blast with this.

The world itself looks more vibrant and interesting and there's a narrative that's actually worth digging into.
