Sony says no AAA third party devs can make a game that rivals COD.

In theory, yes, but when they buy Zenimax and then Activision Blizzard shortly after the concern is very much valid that they’re gulping up too many studios too fast. Every acquisition from there on will be seen as problematic.
I would certainly expect individual studios for a while until the heat dies down a bit, there are a couple like stoic, ioi, and Asobe I could see them grabbing up as they're literally already working together

But what do I know, I certainly never saw zenimax or Activision coming

Very interesting, I am very happy as it seems that they are worried. At last competition has arrived and they have to think twice before they make their decision. Competition is helpful and healthy and if in the end they can't compete as some claim that Microsoft is the big bad then it's their fault that they brought it on themselves.

I don't like this shift by BOTH companies of buying up publishers to this degree. The industry already had only a handful of major publishers running the show, Activision and Bethesda going to MS is not going to be a positive in the industry when it comes to game variety in the long run. It's the same reason why it's unhealthy for the government to have too much consolidated power. It's inefficient and harms competition as well, but Sony is doing the same thing and has been vocal about their plans to buy up studios.

I just think Sony management is run by greedy assholes now more than ever before and should just shut up and focus on delivering great games without the nickel are diming their customers all the time.

It amazes me that they haven’t bought Asobo yet after their work on MS Flight Sim.
Sony will probably buy them. And Moon Studios. And Certain Affinity. And Bungie… wait that already happened.
Seriously, instead of going after promising smaller studios they focus on the big fishes and end up having to promise to not release exclusive games, which in the end won’t change the needle at all on their market share. They get more money though, that’s what they really want.

moon studios said that with their next title they're not working with MS anymore and it won't be an Xbox exclusive so uh.... i doubt a buyout would happen to begin with
but yeah they should have snatched up moon studios, playful studios, studio MDHR, and Dan Fornace as soon as possible. All of those made very good indies for Xbox and with enough nuturing and care could become great studios. theyd be more worth it than the activision buyout at least

Sony is just mad because all the times they fucked over xbox they got fucked back.
Sony definitely doesn't like to share.
Ms is playing nice. For now.
MS has been left in the dust 2 out of their 3 gens. Their only success was Sony's failure with PS3. Lol

But Sony has a point. Perfect what you're good at, don't waste time and money if you're not sure it's worth the risk.

I hope something like this would shut down the deal wherever it can, just to spite MS. They're a behemoth that literally cannot be competed against.

Microsoft needs to be broken up, like yesterday.

EDIT: Everybody "LOL"ing at my comment: I am serious. Microsoft has been a menace way longer than they've been in the game industry. Their acquisitions are never a good thing for any industry (gaming or otherwise).
This take is ridiculous. We need more competition, not less. In gaming Microsoft is not in first, not in second, and depending on where you count mobile gaming or not they might be in third place. It is great to have competition, and I think anyone who hates competition also loves mediocrity, stagnation, and high prices

Sony has been dominating for a long time but these days they’re clearly threatened and try to adapt in not always the best ways.

Like, they want to ride the subscription train like MS but they don’t want day 1 releases, which means for every game their subscribing customers buy, because they don’t want to wait, they essentially decrease the value of the service. Eventually there will be no point subscribing for core gamers who always want the latest stuff, because they’ve already played the big PS+ releases.

I didn’t buy many 2020 and 2021 games. PS+ Premium has been awesome for me.
But what about those who already bought Miles Morales, Returnal, Ratchet, Death Stranding, Demon’s Souls, FF7RI etc?

It’s a strange strategy. It’s a service for LTTP gamers, I don’t see it driving sales like Gamepass can do.

It wasn't bigger than ABK but it probably doesn't help (https://www.windowscentral.com/ori-developers-describe-moon-studios-oppressive-workplace)

Ultimately I think ABK issues actually helped MS to pull the trigger on them, their stock price massively reduced whilst their profits stayed the same.

Reminded me that we are getting ABK results today.
Oh that thing, yeah that doesn’t help but it don’t seem catastrophic either. But that’s a lost thing anyway, Moon has walked away.

Is the acquisition price for Activision Blizzard based on their current stock price btw?

Nah its a fixed price of 95usd.

Currently hovering around 80usd.

Dead on...

I recently got a ps5 a few days before the new ps+ dropped, not by design but it just (luckily in the end I guess) took me that long to find one.

Still have my gamepass because both my brothers use pc and it's easier to use multiple accounts at once.

I never had a ps4 so only had a chance to beat like last of us and another game I'm forgetting.

So getting the back catalog and ps5 upgrades is fucking awesome for a one year subscription, but why would I keep it going so long as I have gamepass anyways.

Ps+ will never be able to keep up with gamepass with the current model, back catalog only does you so much

Weird assumptions that Sony lawyers are using here. I am pretty sure that they know that they using bullshit maths here but ehh, anything to make a legal case.

What do you think, any chance of earning a few bucks if you jump in just for the report reaction?
I am not confident enough to given any advice but I think you will see a decline/flat revenue growth at best (might depend on Diablo immortal). I think COD Warzone and Fortnite is showing real weakness this year relatively to last one. Not sure what the market is expecting though.

It's interesting to see somys comments vs everyone else's. No other publisher seems too bothered but Sony is really pushing to stop this. Its awkward.

Awkward? Sony is platform holder. Are the other platform holders?

Really people here love to act stupid, can’t read properly or just trolling out of desperation.

And they are not even talking about themselves if people read the context.

I saw this in the thread at the other place and it is gold. MS really should go for this if it goes through. Just a little fun.

"If/when the deal goes through, Xbox should run an announcement advertisement for bringing COD to Game Pass and liberally quoting these responses:
"[No other developer] can create a rival." - Sony
"Stands out as a gaming category of its own." - Sony
"A unique franchise that cannot be replaced." - Sony"

Nice light hearted fun in all the madness

Yeah I can kinda relate. My PS4 pretty much broke down after God of War, became super loud and would crash, stopped playing on it almost completely, managed to play a couple hours of Ghost of Tsushima and then retired it. Then I bought a PS5 mid last year and got cheap and didn’t buy many games.
Been drowning in games since I got PS+.

Going forward though. Do I buy Ragnarök this fall or do I wait for the PS+ release and save the value of the service? I don’t know. Feels kinda like buying Disney movies on iTunes when you subscribe to Disney+ and they get greedy and stall the upload. Not a fan.

Who's desperate? I couldn't give two fucks about this kinda bull crap, I'm just kinda laughing at it now.

This gen has been so slow, with cross gen games that the only thing the community has to look at is purchases.

Sony just bought bungie, etc. You could argue that no one can make a game that can compete with destiny....its just funny to see Sony pushing so hard against this acquisition when they are doing it themselves and have been doing long assed timed exclusives as well.

I just hope this goes through soon, so we can all move on...and get those Activision games on game pass.

I’ve recently bought Modern Warfare 2019 on sale and I forget sometimes how utterly sublime those core mechanics are. And it’s not the kind of genre where there’s a great deal of scoop for different approaches, you either nail the feeling of shooting a gun from a first person POV or you don’t.

And I think they’ve had too much money, time and professional experience poured into the fundamental underpinnings for me to see someone coming along and bettering it, in the semi-realistic military genre anyway.

Yeah we’ll see, maybe I’ll buy a couple just to see how it moves, like all traders I’ll tell if it goes up and pretend it never happened if it goes down 😜

You could be right, but that's exactly what people were saying during the Bethesda acquisition.

If you read what I said, playstation only players would still have f2p warzone (and warzone 2, 3 etc) on playstation, where they can still reap in micro transactions, and add in content specific to xbox exclusive (and pc/mobile/tv) mainline titles forcing whales to their platform.

Get a taste, not a full meal. None of this would kill playstation either, it'd just bring Microsoft closer to an even market, and still might not be enough
Yep absolutely and this has been my line of thinking exactly. It’s just more recently, I’ve started to wonder what reasons they’d have to keep it multi platform and I don’t think it would be to just get some additional sales from PlayStation.

Personally, I plan on working from the back up, but my advice as a "patient gamer" as I've gotten older..... Hold on as long as you think you can avoid spoilers lol

If you see they're flying around, might be worth buying just to avoid it if you really care about it...

But, easy for me to say as I haven't played the first yet lol (Spiderman, morales, ghost of tsushima, iki, Detroit become human, most of ff7r)

Something I'd keep in mind, a lot, if not most games get patches not even that far out of release that can frequently boost resolution or fps in dramatic ways....

Sony: We like to buy stuff but don't like it when our competition does.
This is completely different! One thing is to buy a studio, the other entirely is to. It the whole freaking company.

Everyone used to say -back when Microsoft announced they were getting into the industry- that they would buy everything to compete. They are doing it now.

Sad part, is that this was the perfect time for them to invest in so many studios but of course they have to take away from the competition because they will never be able to do them themselves.

LOL fucking hell.

It clearly shows Sony is talking about other 3rd party developers not being able to create something like COD, not Sony themselves.

WTF is up with these click bait threads?

Mods please change the thread title @Mod of War

No, it does not.
The second paragraph does not distinguish when it says they do not believe any competitor can make an FPS with the brand appeal of the Call Of Duty IP. Industry wide, and will include MS first party studios too.

Looks like they sent a statement to the Brazil commission and they admit that none of their devs can make a game that rivals COD. They also say that COD is so big that it influences peoples choice of platform

Seems they are fighting to keep it multiplat and it doesn't look like they will try to compete against it

Wait a second. I thought exclusives influence peoples chooce of platform, not 3rd parties. I am confused.

Not worried about spoilers since it’s nordic mythologies and I’m from the viking lands, I’m interested in how they’ll trigger the different events and how they change them but I’m not playing this game for the story. I still think it’ll be difficult to sit on the fence. We’ll see.

You need to play Miles Morales btw, probably my favorite game on the service (tied with Ratchet I played before I got PS+), one of my favorite games on the console even. It started off a bit bland but after the first big action setpiece I was hooked. It’s really good. Insomniac is climbing my list of favorite devs, they seem to have fun, enjoying life, it’s not just pitch black from beginning til end, their games are joyful in a certain way few other devs can touch. Play it! Highly recommended! 🙂

LOL I bet you hate sony taking bungie as well.

Also, where are the people reveling in kotick being outed? How mysogynistic/transphobic of you

Sorry, I wasn't clear, games in parentheses are the ones I've played on the service! Morales was fantastic, and definitely one of the examples I meant about being happy I got a ps5 later than I was trying to! Vrr makes a huge difference
